This book was released on 2004 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work in this report is motivated by the performance-based engineering approach advocated by PEER. A comprehensive, object-oriented software framework for finite element sensitivity and reliability analysis is developed. The work builds on the existing software OpenSees. The software framework is used to investigate and address challenges particular to nonlinear finite element reliability analysis. As a result, smoothed material models, modifications in existing search algorithms, and a search algorithm hitherto not used in reliability analysis are developed.

This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major earthquakes of the last few decades have generated a great deal of interest in structural control systems, to mitigate seismic hazards to lifeline structures - in particular, bridges. Although, there has been substantial work in the recent past in the development of structural control systems, their effectiveness could not be compared by a systematic study. This is because they were applied to different types of structures and subjected to different types of loadings. In this study, seismic response of the Benchmark Highway Bridge, with passive and semi-active control devices is investigated. The problem is based on the 91/5 highway over-crossing at Southern California, USA. An investigation of the existing devices has been carried out to evaluate their effectiveness under different earthquakes. The present study explores the use of seismic isolators, namely, Friction Pendulum System (FPS), Variable Friction Pendulum System (VFPS) and Variable Frequency Pendulum Isolator (VFPI). The semi-active devices studied include Variable damper, Pseudo- Negative Stiffness (PNS) damper, and Piezoelectric Friction Damper (PFD).

This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear static monotonic (pushover) analysis has become a common practice in performance-based bridge seismic design. The popularity of pushover analysis is due to its ability to identify the failure modes and the design limit states of bridge piers and to provide the progressive collapse sequence of damaged bridges when subjected to major earthq
Book Synopsis Evaluating the Retrofit of Highway Bridges Using Fluid Viscous Dampers by : Asim Rustum
Download or read book Evaluating the Retrofit of Highway Bridges Using Fluid Viscous Dampers written by Asim Rustum and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highway bridges function as the arteries of our society. Hence, it is essential that they remain operational following an earthquake. Unfortunately, a significant number of bridges worldwide, including in Canada, were constructed prior to the development of modern seismic design provisions. In many cases, such bridges are expected to perform poorly during earthquakes. According to a report published in 2000 by Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO), in eastern Ontario alone, there are over 70 bridges that are structurally deficient. Current methods to retrofit these bridges to bring them into compliance with the existing codes would entail substantial structural modifications. Examples of such modifications include the replacement of existing rocker bearings with elastomeric bearings, structural strengthening of piers, and enlarging the bearing surfaces. These methods involve substantial cost, effort, and materials. An alternative means to retrofit structurally deficient bridges is investigated in this thesis.

Book excerpt: This executive summary gives an overview of the results of FHWA Contract DTFH61 92 C 00112, Seismic Research Program, which performed a series of special studies addressing the seismic design of new construction. The objectives of this project were to perform a series of special studies pertaining to the seismic vulnerability of highway structures, and to develop technical information on which future specifications for the seismic design of bridges could be based. This project divided work into 5 areas and 13 tasks, focusing on the following elements: review of current seismic design criteria, the seismic hazard exposure of the American highway system, foundation design and soil behavior, structural design, structural analysis and response, the relative importance of specific bridges and an assessment of the impact of current and recently completed research. The Seismic Research Program had a national focus, and aimed in part to address the differences in seismicity, bridge types, and typical design details between the central and eastern United States (CEUS) and those previously studied in California and the western United States. In many cases, west coast design practices required considerable modification before implementation in the CEUS. The project resulted in 34 research reports, of which 31 are summarized in this document. Seventeen of the reports have been published as National Center for Earthquake Engineering Research (NCEER) or Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research (MCEER) reports. The research agencies final reports for the other taks are available from MCEER upon request.

Book Synopsis Validation of Seismic Soil-foundation-structure Interaction Analysis of Meloland Road Overcrossing by : Thomas Albert Mar
Download or read book Validation of Seismic Soil-foundation-structure Interaction Analysis of Meloland Road Overcrossing written by Thomas Albert Mar and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this project is to investigate the validity of seismic soil-foundation-structure interaction analysis of a typical California highway bridge structure subjected to near-fault ground motions. A three-dimensional nonlinear finite element model of Meloland Road Overcrossing was developed. The model included a combination of elements including shell elements for the bridge deck. The column and piles were modeled using frame elements. Abutment-backfill and ground soil were simulated using nonlinear springs. The complete bridge system was subjected to three-component recorded free-field earthquake motions. The resulting dynamic response of the bridge model was found to be in close agreement with motions recorded at various locations on the bridge. This validates the practical application and methodology of this project and may be used for evaluating the seismic response of other typical bridges.
