Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dean vortices in a curved channel were studied using flow visualization and a miniature Kiel probe to record total pressure. The channel is 1.27 cm. high by 50.8 cm. wide (0.5 in. x 20.0 in.), aspect ratio of 40 to 1, with a radius of curvature of 60.96 cm. (24.0 in) for the concave surface. Mean velocities within the curve channel were maintained at Dean numbers which ranged from 0 to 250. Smoke injected into the mouth of the channel at Dean numbers from 42 to 218 and locations from 65 deg to 145 deg revealed different types of flow behavior, including numerous pairs of Dean vortices extending from the convex to the concave wall. Different types off flow structures have been categorized as to unsteadiness, height, and symmetry. For each category a map has been constructed which depicts the flow structure observed as a function of Dean number and angular location. These maps and the photographs give an understanding of the flow behavior in the curved channel over a significant range of experimental conditions. Total pressure measurements at a Dean number of 110 and one location (118 deg) were taken. The preliminary results are presented on a contour plot which shows some repeatability across a 2 in. portion of the channel span. These contour plot results are consistent with photographs for the same experimental conditions. (Author).

Book excerpt: The development and structure of Dean vortices in a curved channel were measured and studied. A 40:1 aspect ratio channel with mild curvature was employed. Circulation of mean streamwise vorticity, and maxima of streamwise, spanwise and radial components of vorticity increase as the Dean number increases from 40 to 140. Mean vorticity components were determined from measurements of the three components of mean velocity using a miniature five hole pressure probe. Spectra obtained from a subminiature crossed wire probe show principal and harmonic frequencies for Dean numbers greater than 165, when vortices are twisting. Spectral peaks at other Dean numbers provide evidence of oscillations also observed during flow visualization. Keywords: Dean vortices, Dean number, Channel flow, Rectangular curved channel, Theses. (JHD).

Book excerpt: The time varying development and structure of Dean vortices were studied using flow visualization. Observations were made over a range of Dean numbers from 40 to 200 using a transparent channel with mild curvature, 40:1 aspect ratio, and an inner to outer radius ratio of 0.979. Seven flow visualization techniques were tried but only one, a wood burning smoke generator, produced usable results. Different vortex characteristics were observed and documented in sequences of photographs spaced one quarter of a second apart at locations ranging from 85 to 135 degrees from the start of curvature. Evidence is presented that supports the twisting/rocking nature of the flow. keywords: Curved heat transfer; Centrifugal instabilities. (KR).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) decided in 1992 to sponsor the fourth Symposium on Laminar-Turbulent Transition, Sendai/Japan, 1994. The objectives of the present Symposium were to deepen the fundamental knowledge of stability and laminar turbulent transition in three-dimensional and compressible flows and to contribute to recent developing technologies in the field. This Symposium followed the three previous IUTAM-Symposia (Stuttgart 1979, Novosibirsk 1984 and Toulouse 1989). The Scientific Committee selected two keynote lectures and 62 technical papers. The Symposium was held on the 5th to 9th of September, 1994, at the Sendai International Center in Sendai. The participants were 82 scientists from 10 countries. The keynote lectures have critically reviewed recent development of researches concerning the laminar-to-turbulent transition phenomena from the fundamental and the application aspects. Many papers presented were concerned about the detailed mechanism of the boundary layer transition (receptivity, secondary instability, turbulent spot and bypass transition). Particular emphasis was further placed on the transition of three-dimensional boundary layers on rotation systems and on swept wings. Attention was also given to compressible hypersonic flows.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 32 (thesis year 1987) a total of 12,483 theses titles from 22 Canadian and 176 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 32 reports theses submitted in 1987, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.
