Book excerpt: Between 1966 and 1980 world industrial production and trade exhibited substantial growth. In constant prices, world industrial output approximately doubled and world trade in manufactured goods tripled. However, this growth was not evenly spread over time, across countries and across industries, and was accompanied by major structural changes. Industries requiring relatively high technology and skill levels in the production processes showed the most vigorous expansion; two such industries, the chemical and machinery industries, together accounted for 67 percent of the growth in total world industrial output. Amongst the country groups, the more developed market economies remained predominant in both production and trade, accounting for 50 percent of the total world growth in output and 82 percent of trade. Developing countries exhibited high growth in most industrial branches and relatively rapid structural transformation, and made a major gain in the exports of manufactured goods. Centrally planned economies showed a combination of high growth rates and relative stability in production, but their role in world trade diminished. In all industrial branches and for all country groups, growth rates declined sharply between the periods before and after 1973.

Book excerpt: This working paper presents a quantitative analysis of sectoral trends in the global economy. After surveying the relevant theoretical and empirical literature on structural change, we discuss the historical evolution of agriculture, industry and services in terms of their share of world value added. This analysis refers to six continental regions and covers a period of 40 years. Constant-market-shares (CMS) analysis is then used to investigate changes in the contribution of regional aggregates to world production. This is followed by an analysis of the evolution of the manufacturing industry and the intensity of structural change for a sample of 30 countries and 18 sub-sectors for which data are available in the UNIDO INDSTAT 2, 2009 database. Three main findings resulted from the analysis. First, the long-term rise in the share of services in global value added has been slowing down in the last decade. Second, the upward trend in the global value added share of North America and Asia seems to be partly reverted in favor of other regions. Third, after a setback during the 1980s, structural transformation in the manufacturing sector has been accelerating in the last two decades. The purpose of this paper is to provide a starting point for more specific studies at sector, national and regional level.
