Book excerpt: Professor Cramer, author of the pivotal Mathematical Methods of Statistics (1946), examines problems in the theory of stochastic processes that can be considered as generalizations of problems in the classical theory of statistical inference. He discusses first the representation formula and then treats its application to the multiplicity problem, classes of processes with multiplicity N= 1, normal or Gaussian processes. He concludes with a discussion of problems of estimation for a normal process. A distinguished mathematician, Harald Cramer has been President of the University of Stockholm and Chancellor of the Swedish Universities. He is a member of many professional societies, including the Royal Swedish Academy of Science and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Originally published in 1971. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the revised and enlarged 2nd edition of the authors’ original text, which was intended to be a modest complement to Grenander's fundamental memoir on stochastic processes and related inference theory. The present volume gives a substantial account of regression analysis, both for stochastic processes and measures, and includes recent material on Ridge regression with some unexpected applications, for example in econometrics. The first three chapters can be used for a quarter or semester graduate course on inference on stochastic processes. The remaining chapters provide more advanced material on stochastic analysis suitable for graduate seminars and discussions, leading to dissertation or research work. In general, the book will be of interest to researchers in probability theory, mathematical statistics and electrical and information theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The material accumulated and presented in this volume can be ex plained easily. At the start of my graduate studies in the early 1950s, I Grenander's (1950) thesis, and was much attracted to the came across entire subject considered there. I then began preparing for the neces sary mathematics to appreciate and possibly make some contributions to the area. Thus after a decade of learning and some publications on the way, I wanted to write a modest monograph complementing Grenander's fundamental memoir. So I took a sabbatical leave from my teaching position at the Carnegie-Mellon University, encouraged by an Air Force Grant for the purpose, and followed by a couple of years more learning opportunity at the Institute for Advanced Study to complete the project. As I progressed, the plan grew larger needing a substantial background material which was made into an independent initial volume in (1979). In its preface I said: "My intension was to present the following material as the first part of a book treating the In ference Theory of stochastic processes, but the latter account has now receded to a distant future," namely for two more decades! Meanwhile, a much enlarged second edition of that early work has appeared (1995), and now I am able to present the main part of the original plan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building upon the previous editions, this textbook is a first course in stochastic processes taken by undergraduate and graduate students (MS and PhD students from math, statistics, economics, computer science, engineering, and finance departments) who have had a course in probability theory. It covers Markov chains in discrete and continuous time, Poisson processes, renewal processes, martingales, and option pricing. One can only learn a subject by seeing it in action, so there are a large number of examples and more than 300 carefully chosen exercises to deepen the reader’s understanding. Drawing from teaching experience and student feedback, there are many new examples and problems with solutions that use TI-83 to eliminate the tedious details of solving linear equations by hand, and the collection of exercises is much improved, with many more biological examples. Originally included in previous editions, material too advanced for this first course in stochastic processes has been eliminated while treatment of other topics useful for applications has been expanded. In addition, the ordering of topics has been improved; for example, the difficult subject of martingales is delayed until its usefulness can be applied in the treatment of mathematical finance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to Stochastic Modeling provides information pertinent to the standard concepts and methods of stochastic modeling. This book presents the rich diversity of applications of stochastic processes in the sciences. Organized into nine chapters, this book begins with an overview of diverse types of stochastic models, which predicts a set of possible outcomes weighed by their likelihoods or probabilities. This text then provides exercises in the applications of simple stochastic analysis to appropriate problems. Other chapters consider the study of general functions of independent, identically distributed, nonnegative random variables representing the successive intervals between renewals. This book discusses as well the numerous examples of Markov branching processes that arise naturally in various scientific disciplines. The final chapter deals with queueing models, which aid the design process by predicting system performance. This book is a valuable resource for students of engineering and management science. Engineers will also find this book useful.

Book excerpt: Emphasizing fundamental mathematical ideas rather than proofs, Introduction to Stochastic Processes, Second Edition provides quick access to important foundations of probability theory applicable to problems in many fields. Assuming that you have a reasonable level of computer literacy, the ability to write simple programs, and the access to software for linear algebra computations, the author approaches the problems and theorems with a focus on stochastic processes evolving with time, rather than a particular emphasis on measure theory. For those lacking in exposure to linear differential and difference equations, the author begins with a brief introduction to these concepts. He proceeds to discuss Markov chains, optimal stopping, martingales, and Brownian motion. The book concludes with a chapter on stochastic integration. The author supplies many basic, general examples and provides exercises at the end of each chapter. New to the Second Edition: Expanded chapter on stochastic integration that introduces modern mathematical finance Introduction of Girsanov transformation and the Feynman-Kac formula Expanded discussion of Itô's formula and the Black-Scholes formula for pricing options New topics such as Doob's maximal inequality and a discussion on self similarity in the chapter on Brownian motion Applicable to the fields of mathematics, statistics, and engineering as well as computer science, economics, business, biological science, psychology, and engineering, this concise introduction is an excellent resource both for students and professionals.

Book excerpt: Stochastic Modelling of Social Processes provides information pertinent to the development in the field of stochastic modeling and its applications in the social sciences. This book demonstrates that stochastic models can fulfill the goals of explanation and prediction. Organized into nine chapters, this book begins with an overview of stochastic models that fulfill normative, predictive, and structural–analytic roles with the aid of the theory of probability. This text then examines the study of labor market structures using analysis of job and career mobility, which is one of the approaches taken by sociologists in research on the labor market. Other chapters consider the characteristic trends and patterns from data on divorces. This book discusses as well the two approaches of stochastic modeling of social processes, namely competing risk models and semi-Markov processes. The final chapter deals with the practical application of regression models of survival data. This book is a valuable resource for social scientists and statisticians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High dimensional probability, in the sense that encompasses the topics rep resented in this volume, began about thirty years ago with research in two related areas: limit theorems for sums of independent Banach space valued random vectors and general Gaussian processes. An important feature in these past research studies has been the fact that they highlighted the es sential probabilistic nature of the problems considered. In part, this was because, by working on a general Banach space, one had to discard the extra, and often extraneous, structure imposed by random variables taking values in a Euclidean space, or by processes being indexed by sets in R or Rd. Doing this led to striking advances, particularly in Gaussian process theory. It also led to the creation or introduction of powerful new tools, such as randomization, decoupling, moment and exponential inequalities, chaining, isoperimetry and concentration of measure, which apply to areas well beyond those for which they were created. The general theory of em pirical processes, with its vast applications in statistics, the study of local times of Markov processes, certain problems in harmonic analysis, and the general theory of stochastic processes are just several of the broad areas in which Gaussian process techniques and techniques from probability in Banach spaces have made a substantial impact. Parallel to this work on probability in Banach spaces, classical proba bility and empirical process theory were enriched by the development of powerful results in strong approximations.
