Book Synopsis Photoelectrochemical Activity of Titanium Dioxide Thin Films by : Aida Mehdinezhad Roshan
Download or read book Photoelectrochemical Activity of Titanium Dioxide Thin Films written by Aida Mehdinezhad Roshan and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is considered as an oxide semiconductor with several unique properties, including environmental sensing capabilities, biocompatibility and photocurrent generation, long-term stability, cost efficiency, and chemical inertness. TiO2 thin films have a wide range of applications in dye-sensitized solar cells. TiO2 films have been deposited on two different substrates, aluminum and titanium. Two different methods used for deposition of the thin films namely: Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) and Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD). In order to study the effect of roughness of the substrate on photocurrent generation of the deposited films, one group of substrates were "patterned" by Electrolytic Plasma Processing (EPP) prior to deposition. A "hill and valley" morphology was observed on the uppermost layer of the EPP-treated substrates. The microstructure and also roughness of the EPP-treated substrates were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Profilometry. Similarly, the deposited TiO2 thin films were also characterized by SEM, Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), Raman, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), X-ray Diffractometry (XRD), and Profilometry. It was found that the PEO deposited film on titanium substrate was composed of anatase and the film on the aluminum substrate was amorphous. The average thickness of the PEO deposited films was about 6-10 microns. TiO2 thin films deposited by DC magnetron sputtering were found to be almost amorphous with an average thickness of 650 nm. High resolution TEM analysis showed some areas of crystallinity with a grain size of ~5 nm. Photoelectrocurrent measurements were then performed on all deposited films by a standard single-compartment, three-electrode electrochemical cell. It has been observed that the films deposited by PVD technique have a much higher quality and produce much higher photocurrent comparing to ones of PEO method.

Book Synopsis Medical Coatings and Deposition Technologies by : David Glocker
Download or read book Medical Coatings and Deposition Technologies written by David Glocker and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-07-11 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medical Coatings and Deposition Technologies is an important new addition to the libraries of medical device designers and manufacturers. Coatings enable the properties of the surface of a device to be controlled independently from the underlying bulk properties; they are often critical to the performance of the device and their use is rapidly growing. This book provides an introduction to many of the most important types of coatings used on modern medical devices as well as descriptions of the techniques by which they are applied and methods for testing their efficacy. Developers of new medical devices and those responsible for producing them will find it an important reference when deciding if a particular functionality can be provided by a coating and what limitations may apply in a given application. Written as a practical guide and containing many specific coating examples and a large number of references for further reading, the book will also be useful to students in materials science & engineering with an interest in medical devices. Chapters on antimicrobial coatings as well as coatings for biocompatibility, drug delivery, radiopacity and hardness are supported by chapters describing key liquid coating processes, plasma-based processes and chemical vapor deposition. Many types of coatings can be applied by more than one technique and the reader will learn the tradeoffs given the relevant design, manufacturing and economic constraints. The chapter on regulatory considerations provides important perspectives regarding the marketing of these coatings and medical devices.
Book Synopsis Modern Aspects of Electrochemistry by : Brian E. Conway
Download or read book Modern Aspects of Electrochemistry written by Brian E. Conway and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-09 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of Modern Aspects of Electrochemistry contains six chapters. The first four chapters are about phenomena of interest at the microscopic level and the last two are on phenomena at the macroscopic level. In the first chapter, Uosaki and Kita review various theoretical models that have been presented to describe the phenomena that occur at an electrolyte/ semiconductor interface under illumination. In the second chapter, Orazem and Newman discuss the same phenomena from a different point of view. In Chapter 3, Bogus lavsky presents state-of-the-art considerations of transmembrane potentials and other aspects of active transport in biological systems. Next, Burke and Lyons present a survey of both the theoretical and the experimental work that has been done on hydrous oxide films on several metals. The last two chapters cover the topics of the production of chlorine and caustic and the phenomena of electrolytic gas evol ution. In Chapter 5, Hine et al. describe the engineering aspects of the three processes used in the chi or-alkali industry, and in Chapter 6, Sides reviews the macroscopic phenomena of nucleation, growth, and detachment of bubbles, and the effect of bubbles on the conduc tivity of and mass transfer in electrolytes.
Book Synopsis Plasma Science and Technology by : Tetsu Mieno
Download or read book Plasma Science and Technology written by Tetsu Mieno and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2016-04-20 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early twentieth century, Dr. Irving Langmuir actively studied plasma discharge and surface science. Since then, great progress has been made in the development of applications of discharges and plasmas such as discharge lamps, electric tubes, and arc welding. In relation to studies on space physics and controlled nuclear fusion, plasma physics has greatly advanced. Plasma chemistry has also progressed along with its applications in LSI fabrication technology, the chemical vapor deposition of functional films, and the production of nanomaterials. In the twenty-first century, the further development of applications of plasma physics and plasma chemistry is certainly expected. In this book, 18 chapters on the recent progress in plasma science and technology have been written by active specialists worldwide.
