Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The weak or non-conventional hydrogen bond has been subject of intense scrutiny over recent years in several fields, in particular in structural chemistry, structural biology, and also in the pharmaceutical sciences. There is today a large body of experimental and theoretical evidenceconfirming that hydrogen bonds like C-H...O, N-H...pi, C-H...pi and even bonds like O-H...metal play distinctive roles in molecular recognition, guiding molecular association, and in determining molecular and supramolecular architectures. The relevant compound classes include organometalliccomplexes, organic and bio-organic systems, and also DNA and proteins. The book provides a comprehensive assessment of this interaction type, and is of interest to all those interested in structural and supramolecular science, including fields as crystal engineering and drug design.
Book Synopsis Non-Covalent Catalysis and Hydrogen Bonding by :
Download or read book Non-Covalent Catalysis and Hydrogen Bonding written by and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2019-08-08 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2019 in the subject Chemistry - Bio-chemistry, grade: 1,0, University of Cologne, language: English, abstract: This work is about the non-covalent catalysis and concentrates on the hydrogen-bond catalysis. Nowadays it is common to use catalysis in organic synthesis. It can help in orienting the substrates, lowering barriers to reaction and accelerating the rates of reaction. In addition to metal-ligand systems and biocatalysts, there is another class of catalysts, the organocatalysts which are free of any metals, like many enzymes. The organocatalysts often consist of chiral compounds. The output materials are easy to find in the nature. How these catalysts accelerate the reaction rates is a central question in organic synthesis. It is important to distinguish the interactions with the organic substrates between covalent and non-covalent bonds. The activation of a carbonyl compound by conversion into an enamine or into an iminium ion belongs to the covalent catalysis, while to increase the electrophilicity of a carbonyl group by formation of hydrogen bondings is a typical example for non-covalent organocatalysis. Thus, the acceleration and the control of the reaction rates depend on formation of hydrogen bonds for non-covalent organocatalysis. It is possible to catalyse two hydrogen bonds which occur in dual hydrogen bonding donors.

Book Synopsis Hydrogen Bonding in Biological Structures by : George A. Jeffrey
Download or read book Hydrogen Bonding in Biological Structures written by George A. Jeffrey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrogen bonds are weak attractions, with a binding strength less than one-tenth that of a normal covalent bond. However, hydrogen bonds are of extraordinary importance; without them all wooden structures would collapse, cement would crumble, oceans would vaporize, and all living things would disintegrate into random dispersions of inert matter. Hydrogen Bonding in Biological Structures is informative and eminently usable. It is, in a sense, a Rosetta stone that unlocks a wealth of information from the language of crystallography and makes it accessible to all scientists. (From a book review of Kenneth M. Harmon, Science 1992)
Book Synopsis Recent Advances in Organocatalysis by : Iyad Karamé
Download or read book Recent Advances in Organocatalysis written by Iyad Karamé and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2016-09-28 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organocatalysis has recently attracted enormous attention as green and sustainable catalysis. It was realized as a fundamental field providing wide families of catalysts for important organic transformations. It will certainly develop in the future. Given the diversity of accessible transformations, metal-catalyzed reactions have become major tools in organic synthesis that will undoubtedly continue to have an important impact in the future. Alternatively, over the last years, a metal-free approach such as organocatalysis has reached a level of faithfulness, allowing researchers to discover new catalytic systems based on engagement of new or early-prepared organic molecules as organocatalysts. Organocatalysis meets green chemistry principles, especially the reduction of toxicity and chemical accidents, the biodegradability, and the use of benign and friendlier reaction media and conditions.
Book Synopsis Hydrogen Bonded Polymers by : Wolfgang Binder
Download or read book Hydrogen Bonded Polymers written by Wolfgang Binder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-03-16 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Control of polymeric structure is among the most important endeavours of modern macromolecular science. In particular, tailoring the positioning and strength of intermolecular forces within macromolecules by synthetic methods and thus gaining structural control over the final polymeric materials has become feasible, resulting in the field of supramolecular polymer science. Besides other intermolecular forces, hydrogen bonds are unique intermolecular forces enabling the tuning of material properties via self-assembly processes over a wide range of interactions strength ranging from several kJmol to several tens of kJmol . Central for the formation of these structures are precursor molecules of small molecular weight (usually lower than 10 000), which can assemble in solid or solution to aggregates of defined geometry.
Book Synopsis The Nature of the Hydrogen Bond by : Gastone Gilli
Download or read book The Nature of the Hydrogen Bond written by Gastone Gilli and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-06-25 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrogen bond (H-bond) effects are known: it makes sea water liquid, joins cellulose microfibrils in trees, shapes DNA into genes and polypeptide chains into wool, hair, muscles or enzymes. Its true nature is less known and we may still wonder why O-H...O bond energies range from less than 1 to more than 30 kcal/mol without apparent reason. This H-bond puzzle is re-examined here from its very beginning and presented as an inclusive compilation of experimental H-bond energies and geometries. New concepts emerge from this analysis: new classes of systematically strong H-bonds (CAHBs and RAHBs: charge- and resonance-assisted H-bonds); full H-bond classification in six classes (the six chemical leitmotifs); and assessment of the covalent nature of strong H-bonds. This leads to three distinct but inter-consistent models able to rationalize the H-bond and predict its strength, based on classical VB theory, matching of donor-acceptor acid-base parameters (PA or pKa), or shape of the H-bond proton-transfer pathway. Applications survey a number of systems where strong H-bonds play an important functional role, namely drug-receptor binding, enzymatic catalysis, ion-transport through cell membranes, crystal design and molecular mechanisms of functional materials.
