Book Synopsis Keyboard Instruments in Eighteenth-century Vienna by : C. R. F. Maunder
Download or read book Keyboard Instruments in Eighteenth-century Vienna written by C. R. F. Maunder and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although eighteenth-century Viennese keyboard music, especially by such composers as Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, is among the most popular ever written, there has been surprisingly little serious research into the instruments for which it was composed. This book fills that gap. Based on evidence from primary source material, much of it previously undiscovered or neglected, Maunder traces the history and development of the various keyboard instruments available in Vienna throughout the eighteenth century--harpsichords, clavichords, and pianos--and their use by composers and performers.

Book Synopsis Harpsichord, Clavichord & Fortepiano by : Derek Adlam
Download or read book Harpsichord, Clavichord & Fortepiano written by Derek Adlam and published by Shire Publications. This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the history of the three types of stringed keyboard instrument that dominated Western music from the sixteenth century to the middle of the nineteenth century. The Virginal, which provided the musical accompaniment to the reign of Elizabeth 1st, was part of the family that also included the harpsichord, which was the concert keyboard for over two hundred years, and its smaller cousin the spinet, which could be found in ladies' chambers across Europe. But not every polite lady owned a spinet - for some this instrument, with its plucked strings, was altogether too harsh -and the clavichord, which used flexible quills to stroke the strings, was much a much gentler option. In the latter part of the eighteenth century a new type of keyboard began to sweep all of these instruments into history: the fortepiano, the forerunner of the piano. This instrument used hammers to strike the strings, giving the possibility, for the first time, of real dynamic contrast.

Book Synopsis A Description and History of the Pianoforte and of the Older Keyboard Stringed Instruments (Classic Reprint) by : Alfred James Hipkins

This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Description and History of the Pianoforte and of the Older Keyboard Stringed Instruments There is no musical instrument so extensively used as the piano forte, and there is certainly none so little understood by the player, in the construction, or the legitimate treatment according to the construction. It would be more intimately known if the performer had to tune it, but the difficulty Of tuning renders the employment of a specialist in that art necessary. Few piano players know more about a piano than that the sounds are caused by hammers striking against wire strings. There has, however, arisen in our leading music schools a desire to know more, and students are not now satisfied to remain unacquainted with the nature of their instru ment. TO assist those who are curious about its construction is one of the Obj ects for which this book is written. I have chosen to start from the introduction of iron in the construction of the pianoforte, about 1820, as convenient for my purpose, regarding the entirely wooden framed piano as appertaining to an historical division, in which the precursors Of the piano, the clavichord, virginal or spinet, and harpsichord will be found. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past few centuries, manufacturers have been modifying the design of keyboard instruments as a way to expand the instrument's capabilities; these modifications include the keyboard ranges, their dynamic levels, the pedals, the number of manuals, as well as electronic augmentations. The earliest record of double harpsichords can be found from the last quarter of the 16th century, where the manuals were pitched a fourth apart to facilitate transposition. Later, in the 17th century, harpsichords with different numbers of registers and manuals were built - a few double-manual Italian harpsichords with two 8' registers and one 4' register were made from the middle of the 17th century. Harpsichords with richer and fuller sound were also built later in the 18th century, opening up a variety of possibilities for new repertoire. Later, the two-manual concept was adapted to the piano, and the Moór piano, as well as the hyperpiano, represent a culmination in the evolution of keyboard instruments. With the expansion of the keyboard's capabilities in the two-manual harpsichord, players were able to play technically challenging passages in a close position, as well as give clarity to dynamic contrasts. Composers composed a number of works in response to these innovations, ranging from François Couperin's Pièces de clavecin, J.S. Bach's Clavier-Übung II and Goldberg Variations, to Ligeti's Continuum. This repertoire was written specifically for two-manual harpsichords and requires great technical command of the instrument. This project explores the history and the repertoire of double manual and other extended keyboard instruments, and examines the significance of using such instruments in selected musical examples. It also investigates repertoire that can be performed more effectively on a double manual keyboard instead of an ordinary piano due to textural issues, overlapped passages, and other technical demands.
