Book Synopsis The String Quartets of Beethoven by : William Kinderman
Download or read book The String Quartets of Beethoven written by William Kinderman and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We do not understand music--it understands us." This aphorism by Theodor W. Adorno expresses the quandary and the fascination many listeners have felt in approaching Beethoven's late quartets. No group of compositions occupies a more central position in chamber music, yet the meaning of these works continues to stimulate debate. William Kinderman's The String Quartets of Beethoven stands as the most detailed and comprehensive exploration of the subject. It collects new work by leading international scholars who draw on a variety of historical sources and analytical approaches to offer fresh insights into the aesthetics of the quartets, probing expressive and structural features that have hitherto received little attention. This volume also includes an appendix with updated information on the chronology and sources of the quartets and a detailed bibliography.

Book Synopsis Beethoven for a Later Age by : Edward Dusinberre
Download or read book Beethoven for a Later Age written by Edward Dusinberre and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the history of the composition of Beethoven's string quartets as the backbone to his story, Edward Dusinberre - leader of the Takacs Quartet - recounts the life of the Quartet from its inception in Hungary, through emigration to the US and its present-day life of world renown. He also describes what it was like for him, as a young man fresh out of Julliard, to join the quartet as its (non-Hungarian) leader - a challenging task. Beethoven for a Later Age takes the reader inside the life of a quartet, vividly showing how four people make music together over a long period of time without becoming stale, or falling out. The key, the author argues, is in continual change and experiment - and these are at the heart of Beethoven's remarkable compositions for quartet.

Download or read book The String Quartet written by Jos Langens and published by Jos Langens. This book was released on 2021-12-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever thought about how you as a human being are part of a species that makes the fate of all other living things entirely subservient to its own needs and uses its fellow inhabitants purely to meet those needs? What would happen if that were to change? What would happen if people chose to exchange that which makes them human for something else? That's what seems to be happening in "The String Quartet". A string of seemingly inexplicable events gradually reveals how our anthropocentric way of life is about to be fundamentally and irrevocably changed. Classical string quartet music plays a central role in these events. How do these situations arise, and what is the driving force behind the sometimes irrational choices people make – or seem to make – of their own free will? The events described in The String Quartet and the resulting choices people make invite you as a reader to reflect on your own situation and how you lead your life. What choices have you made, and what choices will you make in the future? And how sure are you that those choices are yours?
Book Synopsis Hensel: String Quartet in E flat by : Benedict Taylor
Download or read book Hensel: String Quartet in E flat written by Benedict Taylor and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The String Quartet in E flat major (1834) by Fanny Hensel, née Mendelssohn, is one of the most important works by a female composer written in the nineteenth century. Composed at a turning point in her life (as Hensel was not only grappling with her own creative voice but also coming to terms with her identity as a married woman, and the role her family expected of her), the quartet is significant in showing a woman composing in a genre that was then almost exclusively the domain of male artists. Benedict Taylor's illuminating book situates itself within developing scholarly discourse on the music of women composers, going beyond apologetics – or condemnation of those who hindered their development – to examine the strength and qualities of the music and how it responded to the most progressive works of the period.
Book Synopsis The String Quartet, 1750–1797 by : Mara Parker
Download or read book The String Quartet, 1750–1797 written by Mara Parker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second half of the eighteenth century witnessed a flourishing of the string quartet, often represented as a smooth and logical progression from first violin-dominated homophony to a more equal conversation between the four voices. Yet this progression was neither as smooth nor as linear as previously thought, as Mara Parker illustrates in her examination of the string quartet during this period. Looking at a wide variety of string quartets by composers such as Pleyel, Distler and Filtz, in addition to Haydn and Mozart, the book proposes a new way of describing the relationships between the four instruments in different works. Broadly speaking, these relationships follow one of four patterns: the 'lecture', the 'polite conversation', the 'debate', and the 'conversation'. In focusing on these musical discourses, it becomes apparent that each work is the product of its composer's stylistic choices, location, intended performers and intended audience. Instead of evolving in a strict and universal sequence, the string quartet in the latter half of the eighteenth century was a complex genre with composers mixing and matching musical discourses as circumstances and their own creative impulses required.
