Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For this thesis, an all-welded plate girder, having a ratio of web depth to web thickness of 372, was used. Two panels of this girder had stiffener spacings to web depth of 1 to 1 and 1 to 2. The girder was subjected to loadings considerably in excess of theoretically calculated buckling loads for the two panels. Web stresses were measured at three sections of the girder and these were compared to theoretically calculated values. Bending stresses were measured at the extreme fibres of one section. The variations in stress along one pair of stiffeners was also recorded. [...]" --

Book excerpt: "It will be readily agreed upon by almost any engineer associated with the structural steel fabricating industry, that one of the most convenient and economical types of structural components in use today is the plate girder. Almost every structure built, which has long spans or has heavy loads to be carried, whether it be a building or a bridge, will have one or several of these most practical members. Until recently, specifications gave sufficiently wide scope to the designer to make these girders applicable in almost any case." --

Book excerpt: "At a time when the price of rolled and fabricated steel has risen to all-time new highs and the availability of such material is limited, it is easily understood why it is necessary to re-examine designs which a few years ago were safe, but conservative, to see if today they cannot be made safe and economical. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Method of Limit State (Ultimate Limit State, (ULS) and serviceability limit state (SLS)) present an improved design philosophy and makes allow-ance for the short-compings of working stress method (conventional and long time used in practice). This method provides basic framework, within which the performance of the steel structures may be assessed against various limiting conditions and invo-lves some concept of probability. Object of limit design method is to get steel structure that will remain fit for use during its life with acceptable target reliability. The probability of a limit state being reached during its life time is kept very small. This method has been broadly adopted in many developed countries and based on the recommendations of IS: 800-2007 (Third Revised Edition). This method has been covered in nine parts (in twenty six chapters and four appendices) as listed in contents. After introducing `Limit State Method of Design of Concrete Structures (LSD: CC) in IS: 456-1978, it was natural for Bureau of Indian Standard to introduce `Limit State Design of Steel Structures (LSD: SS). SI units for text for complete book, uncertainties involved in the working stress method and the concept of partial safety factors for the loads and strength of mate-rials (for yield and ultimate stresses reached) are the special feature of the book. Concepts of shear centre for thin-walled beam cross-sections and unsymmetrical bending of beams are important for various requirements and have been included in appendices. The text of book has been covered in about 1000 pages and 550 diagrams. The texts of various topics has been explained in many illustrative worked-out examples.

Book excerpt: Based on the European Welding Engineer (EWF) syllabus Part 3 – Construction and Design, this book provides a clear, highly illustrated and concise explanation of how welded joints and structures are designed and of the constraints which welding may impose on the design. It is therefore of value both to the welding engineer and the design engineerMany engineers coming into the profession of welding engineering lack a background in design and construction of welded structures and plant. This book has been written with such engineers very much in mind. The safe performance of a structure relies on materials and methods of fabrication which can respond to the explicit or implicit design requirements. It is essential that the welding engineer has the opportunity of making his specialist input to the design process, and an understanding of the basis of the design will help that contribution to be most effective. It is also important that the practising design engineer acquires a basic knowledge of the relevant aspects of welding to be able to execute satisfactory designs and, equally important, to know when to seek the input of a qualified welding engineer.Designed for both students and practising engineers in welding and design, the book will also be of great value to civil, structural, mechanical and plant engineers. There is also much that will interest test houses, welding equipment and consumable manufacturers, classification societies and steel companies.
