Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basic equations of Karman and Chien are solved by representing the shape of a torsion box by means of a Fourier series. Angles of twist, longitudinal stresses, and shear stresses are determined in terms of the series coefficients. The method is applied to the calculation of angles of twist and stresses in torsion boxes of rectangular, elliptical, and airfoil cross section. Results obtained for angles of twist and normal stresses are in good agreement with results of Karman and Chien except at sharp corners. Results obtained for shear stresses indicate the necessity for the use of large number of terms of the series for satisfactory accuracy.

Book Synopsis Torsion in Box Wings by : John B. Wheatley
Download or read book Torsion in Box Wings written by John B. Wheatley and published by . This book was released on 1931 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Logical analysis of a box wing necessitates the allowance for the contribution of the drag spars to the torsional strength of the structure. A rigorous analysis is available in the use of the Method of Least Work. The best logical method of analysis is that applying Prandtl's Membrane Analogy. The results so obtained vary by a negligible amount from those obtained by the rigourous method. The stresses in the members of a box wing should be calculated by the membrane analogy method, but should be subject to verification by test before being used in design.
Book Synopsis Dynamic Behavior of Soft and Hard Materials, Volume 3 by : R. Velmurugan
Download or read book Dynamic Behavior of Soft and Hard Materials, Volume 3 written by R. Velmurugan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024-01-04 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprises the select peer-reviewed proceedings of the 13th International Symposium on Plasticity and Impact Mechanics (IMPLAST) 2022. It aims to provide a comprehensive and broad-spectrum picture of the state-of-the-art research and development in diverse areas, such as constitutive relations, theories of plasticity, stress waves in solids, earthquake loading, high-speed impact problems, fire and blast loading, structural crashworthiness and failure, mechanics of penetration and perforation, among others. The contents focus on aspects of large deformations and failure of materials, including metals, composites, cellular, geomaterials, or concrete, and structures resulting from quasi-static earthquake, fire, impact, or blast loading. This book is a valuable resource for researchers and professionals working in academia and industry in the areas of mechanical, materials, and aerospace engineering.

Book Synopsis An Approximate Method of Calculating the Deformations of Wings Having Swept, M Or W, Lambda, and Swept-tip Plan Forms by : George W. Zender
Download or read book An Approximate Method of Calculating the Deformations of Wings Having Swept, M Or W, Lambda, and Swept-tip Plan Forms written by George W. Zender and published by . This book was released on 1953 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An approximate method of calculating the deformation of wings of uniform thickness having swept, M or W, Lambda, and swept-tip plan forms is presented. The method employs an adjustment to the elementary beam theory to account for the effect of the triangular root portion portion of a swept wing on the deformation of the outboard section of the wing. To demonstrate the general applicability of the method, the modified elementary theory is applied to the more comples M or W, Lambda, and swept-tip plan forms as well as to swept plan forms. For the purpose of calculating angles of attack, it is shown that the unmodified elementary beam theory applied to that part of the wing outboard of the root triangle produces satisfactory results. However, for calculating deflections it is necessary to include the effects of the root-triangle deformation.
Book Synopsis Mechanics of Materials by : Bichara B. Muvdi
Download or read book Mechanics of Materials written by Bichara B. Muvdi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-09-19 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanics of Materials: With Applications in Excel® covers the fundamentals of the mechanics of materials—or strength of materials—in a clear and easily understandable way. Each chapter explains the theory of the underlying principles and the applicable mathematical relations, offering examples that illustrate the application of the mathematical relations to physical situations. Then, homework problems—arranged from the simplest to the most demanding—are presented, along with a number of challenging review problems, to ensure comprehension of key concepts. What makes this book unique is that it also instills practical skills for developing Microsoft Excel applications to solve mechanics of materials problems using numerical techniques. Mechanics of Materials: With Applications in Excel® provides editable Excel spreadsheets representing all the examples featured in the text, PowerPoint lecture slides, multimedia simulations, graphics files, and a solutions manual with qualifying course adoption.
