Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 24 (thesis year 1979) a total of 10,033 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 215 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 24 reports these submitted in 1979, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: The second of two volumes from the 1999 conference (v.1 was published in 1999) makes available the opening lecture on pre-failure behavior of soils as construction materials, as well as 24 contributions on various themes of the conference, laboratory tests, in situ tests, stress-strain behavior, applications and case histories. Some specific topics include time-dependent deformation characteristics of stiff geomaterials, boundary value problems in geotechnical engineering, and the effect of reinforcement due to choice of geogrid. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ground motion prediction formulas based upon elastic wave propagation in one-dimension (no strain transverse to the propagation direction) have been used widely in protective construction work. Actual soil materials exhibit many deviations from elastic behavior. This report assesses the probable influence of these non-elastic effects upon the accuracy of the above-mentioned prediction formulas, and upon the question of stress attenuation with depth. Three different models of soil behavior are assumed: a standard 3-element visco-elastic model (spring in series with spring-dashpot combination); a compacting model (straight line loading and unloading curves); and an ''elastic'' model in which any arbitrary shape may be assigned to the loading stress-strain curve. This report deals primarily with the first of these three models; the possible significance and probable importance of the third model are discussed briefly. By combining the theoretical and experimental results, it is shown that the elastic ground motion prediction formulas are generally valid (for cases where it is appropriate to think of one-dimensional motion); i.e. the possible effects of viscosity and inelasticity are no greater than uncertainties as to the order of magnitude of the compressibility of an in situ soil mass. Book excerpt: The report presents results of experimental investigations of the comparative behavior of cement-treated silty clay and cement-treated buckshot clay under repeated compressive stresses, the behavior of cement-treated silty clay in repeated flexure, and effects of repeated load duration and frequency in both compression and flexure. Analyses are presented relative to the adequacy of stabilized layers to withstand flexural stresses imposed by specified design trucks and aircraft. Fatigue probabilities are examined and a method for assessing the probable effects on performance of variations in stabilized soil quality is described. (Author).

The spectrum of topics include, but is not limited to, soil behavior, soil dynamics, earthquake site response analysis, soil liquefactions, as well as the modeling and assessment of shallow and deep foundations. The author provides the reader with both theory and practical applications, and thoroughly links the methodological approaches with engineering applications. The book also contains cutting-edge developments in offshore foundation engineering such as anchor piles, suction piles, pile torsion modeling, soil ageing effects and scour estimation. The target audience primarily comprises research experts and practitioners in the field of offshore engineering, but the book may also be beneficial for graduate students.
