Book excerpt: Since the grain-boundary constituents in Al-Zn-Mg alloys are generally too fine for their corrosion behavior to be studied in situ, an experimental approach involving simulation was adopted. This involved the examination of the corrosion behavior of a small ingot of MgZn2, the Al-Zn-Mg alloy in the as-quenched state, and pure aluminum. The pure aluminum and the as-quenched alloy were considered to represent the two limiting cases of the material comprising the precipitate-free zone; pure aluminum representing the limiting case of the solute-depleted region and the as-quenched alloy the vacancy depleted region. Book excerpt: Prior studies on grain boundary segregation in Al-Zn-Mg have shown that free Mg is present along the grain boundaries in these alloys under all heat-treat conditions. In this paper, further studies on grain boundary segregation in Al-Zn-Mg alloys are outlined. A physical basis for the observed segregation profiles is provided through the vacancy pump model developed by Anthony. The implications of the observed segregation to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and other environmentally-induced embrittling phenomena (where hydrogen could possibly play a dominant role) are discussed in terms of a possible Mg-H complex formation. A wide body of circumstantial evidence from several areas for such an interaction is provided. The dependence of this segregation on boundary type is explored and texture control is proposed as a possible means of controlling segregation and enhancing resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Book excerpt: Auger electron spectroscopy and chemical depth profiling by argon sputtering were employed to obtain the grain boundary segregation profiles of various aluminum alloys. Samples of both commercial (7075, 7050, and 7049) and high purity alloys based on the Al-Zn-Mg ternary in different heat treatments were examined following in situ fracturing in the spectrometer. Segregation profiles indicate that the grain boundaries in these alloys are considerably enriched in Mg and Zn. In commercial alloys, however, the grain boundaries are depleted in the minor elements Fe, Cu and Si. AES spectra of oxide films formed on Al-Zn-Mg alloys indicate that the enhanced segregation along the grain boundaries results in a film rich in Mg. It is postulated that incorporation of extensive amounts of these alloying elements into the film renders it less protective and leads to enhanced hydrogen entry and embrittlement by stress corrosion cracking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of magnesium alloys is increasing in a range of applications, and their popularity is growing wherever lightweight materials are needed. This book provides a comprehensive account of the corrosion of magnesium alloys. It covers not only the corrosion performances and mechanisms of Mg alloys in conventional environments, such as sodium chloride solutions, but also looks at their corrosion behaviours in special media, like engine coolants and simulated body fluids. Part one covers fundamentals such as the corrosion electrochemistry, activity and passivity of magnesium and its alloys. Part two then considers the metallurgical effect in relation to the corrosion of magnesium alloys, including the role of micro-structure and earth-rare elements, the corrosion behaviour of magnesium-based bulk metallic glasses, and the corrosion of innovative magnesium alloys. Part three goes on to describe environmental influences on the corrosion of magnesium alloys, such as atmospheric corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, creep and fatigue behaviour, and galvanic corrosion. Finally, part four is concerned with various means of protecting magnesium alloys against corrosion through the use of aluminium electrodeposition, conversion and electrophoretic coatings, and anodisation. With its distinguished editor and team of contributors, this book is an invaluable resource for metallurgists, engineers and designers working with magnesium and its alloys, as well as professionals in the aerospace and automotive industries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corrosion failures of industrial components are commonly associated with welding. The reasons are many and varied. For example, welding may reduce the resistance to corrosion and environmentally assisted cracking by altering composition and microstructure, modifying mechanical properties, introducing residual stress, and creating physical defects. This book details the many forms of weld corrosion and the methods used to minimize weld corrosion. Chapters on specific alloys groups--carbon and alloy steels, stainless steels, high-nickel alloys, and nonferrous alloys--describe both general welding characteristics and the metallurgical factors that influence corrosion behavior. Corrosion problems associated with dissimilar metal weldments are also examined. Case histories document corrosion problems unique to specific industries including oil and gas, chemical processing, pulp and paper, and electric power. Special challenges caused by high-temperature environments are discussed. Commonly used methods to monitor weld corrosion and test methods for evaluation of intergranular, pitting, crevice, stress-corrosion cracking, and other forms of corrosion are also reviewed.

Book excerpt: The problem of stress corrosion cracking (SCC), which causes sudden failure of metals and other materials subjected to stress in corrosive environment(s), has a significant impact on a number of sectors including the oil and gas industries and nuclear power production. Stress corrosion cracking reviews the fundamentals of the phenomenon as well as examining stress corrosion behaviour in specific materials and particular industries. The book is divided into four parts. Part one covers the mechanisms of SCC and hydrogen embrittlement, while the focus of part two is on methods of testing for SCC in metals. Chapters in part three each review the phenomenon with reference to a specific material, with a variety of metals, alloys and composites discussed, including steels, titanium alloys and polymer composites. In part four, the effect of SCC in various industries is examined, with chapters covering subjects such as aerospace engineering, nuclear reactors, utilities and pipelines. With its distinguished editors and international team of contributors, Stress corrosion cracking is an essential reference for engineers and designers working with metals, alloys and polymers, and will be an invaluable tool for any industries in which metallic components are exposed to tension, corrosive environments at ambient and high temperatures. Examines the mechanisms of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) presenting recognising testing methods and materials resistant to SCC Assesses the effect of SCC on particular metals featuring steel, stainless steel, nickel-based alloys, magnesium alloys, copper-based alloys and welds in steels Reviews the monitoring and management of SCC and the affect of SCC in different industries such as petrochemical and aerospace
