Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Author's PrefaceThe objective of this book is to provide a thorough and systematic study of the problem of laminated composites containing stress concentrations. Stress concentrations are introduced in laminated plates in the forms of circular holes, elliptical openings and straight cracks. These forms of cutouts have many practical applications, and are familiar to most engineers. Stress concentrations exist in all known structural components. Stress concentrations have great practical importance because they are normally the cause of failure. In addition to stress analyses of laminated composites, we need more fundamental understanding of the failure mode, the failure criterion, the effects on global laminate response, and the design of composites in the presence of stress concentrations. In this book, all the subjects studied are closely related to the problem of stress concentrations in laminated composites . . . . All the models are verified with many experimental results. The underlying objective of this comprehensive study is to give the readers an in-depth and thorough understanding of the problem of stress concentrations in composites. This book is the first to address the problem of laminated composites containing stress concentrations in a systematic way.
Book Synopsis Three-dimensional Analysis of Stress Concentrations Near Holes in Laminated Composites by : Richard M. Barker
Download or read book Three-dimensional Analysis of Stress Concentrations Near Holes in Laminated Composites written by Richard M. Barker and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stress concentration factors are determined using a three-dimensional finite-element analysis for laminated composites pierced by circular, square and diamond-shaped holes. Both angel-ply and bidirectional laminates are investigated for hole size to width-of- strip ratios from 0.125 to 0.41. Normal stress concentrations are found to be the least for square holes and greatest for diamond-shaped holes. Interlaminar shear stress concentrations which cannot be determined by a two-dimensional analysis, are as large at the hole surface as those at the free edge when angle-ply laminates are utilized and the holes are large. For small circular holes, angle-ply (+ or -45) LAMINATES ARE RECOMMENDED. When large holes are present, bidirectional (90/0) laminates are shown to be more efficient. (Author-PL).

Book Synopsis Stress Concentration Around Holes in Laminated Fibrous Composites by : David Lee Saba
Download or read book Stress Concentration Around Holes in Laminated Fibrous Composites written by David Lee Saba and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to show, both experimentally and analytically, that the stress concentration around holes in laminated fibrous composites is not adequately described by the theoretical solution for homogeneous orthotropic plates, and that it is a function of hole size. It was shown that the gross laminate properties, determined analytically from individual laminate properties, make it impossible to express the proper boundary conditions at a free edge. A new expression for the modulus of elasticity tangential to a free boundary was developed. Thus, the problem became similar to that of a circular hole strengthened by an elastic ring. Furthermore, the effective width of such a ring was found to depend upon hole size. Thus, the stress concentration factor was shown to be a function of hole size, which was not predicted by homogeneous orthotropic theory. These results were very satisfactorily verified by experiment. (Author).

Book Synopsis Delamination Behaviour of Composites by : Srinivasan Sridharan
Download or read book Delamination Behaviour of Composites written by Srinivasan Sridharan and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2008-10-21 with total page 787 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given such advantages as low weight compared to strength and toughness, laminated composites are now used in a wide range of applications. Their increasing use has underlined the need to understand their principal mode of failure, delamination. This important book reviews key research in understanding and preventing delamination. The first part of the book reviews general issues such as the role of fracture mechanics in understanding delamination, design issues and ways of testing delamination resistance. Part two describes techniques for detecting and characterising delamination such as piezoelectric sensors, the use of lamb waves and acoustic emission techniques. The next two sections of the book discuss ways of studying and modelling delamination behaviour. The final part of the book reviews research on delamination behaviour in particular conditions such as shell and sandwich structures, z-pin bridging and resin bonding. With its distinguished editor and international team of contributors, Delamination behaviour of composites is a standard reference for all those researching laminated composites and using them in such diverse applications as microelectronics, aerospace, marine, automotive and civil engineering. Reviews the role of fracture mechanics in understanding delamination, design issues and ways of testing delamination resistance Discuss ways of studying and modelling delamination behaviour A standard reference for all those researching laminated composites
Book Synopsis Temperature Dependence of Stress Concentration Factors in Composite Materials by : Rene Joseph Chicoine
Download or read book Temperature Dependence of Stress Concentration Factors in Composite Materials written by Rene Joseph Chicoine and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis reports the results of an experimental investigation of the effects of temperature on the strain concentration factor due to a circular hole in a graphite/epoxy laminated composite plate subjected to tension in a principal material direction. It is shown that for the (0/+ or - 45 deg/0)s laminate tested, the strain concentration factor at 300 degrees Fahrenheit was 20% greater than the room temperature value. This variation is not predicted by classical solutions based on homogeneous orthotropic elasticity. (Author).
