This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A community bank in Nigeria is a self-sustaining financial institution owned and managed within a community to provide financial services to that community. The National Board for Community Banks (NBCB) processes applications for the establishment of community banks. The first community bank commenced operation in December 1990. Since then, NBCB has issued provisional licenses to over 1,366 community banks across the country. This paper therefore, assesses the role played by these community banks towards rural development in Nigeria. Capital adequacy, asset quality, earning strength, management competence, and liquidity sufficiency of the banks were basically the key instruments used in measuring the performance of the community banks used in the sample. It was found that although community banks faced a lot of problems, especially, in terms of over concentration of credits and sub standard asset base, they contribute immensely to rural development in Nigeria. Community banks have much development potential, and, while the Scheme 'has had mixed achievements', the growth of non-banking facilities, and increased collaboration with self-help groups or NGOs, should lead to greater success. It is the recommendation of the paper that, more is needed in the area of creating awareness of the existence of these banks. The Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) cover to pay Depositors a maximum refund of N30,000 incase of distress or bank failure as against N50,000 for conventional banks should be raised and the 500,000 matching grant of the NBCB is grossly inadequate considering the lots of achievements needed from these banks. Raising the insurance cover to N100,000 and the matching grant to 1 million could go along way in enhancing the development of community banks in Nigeria.

Book excerpt: One of the driving forces in catalyzing sustainable development interventions is systems accountability. This book tackles the notion of systems accountability in the context of enterprise and broader development planning, providing diversely institutionalized and applied implications for Africa. This compilation of innovatively selected chapters is not only relevant to contemporary corporate and public sector management, but also a timely guide on the role of digitalization in delivering real-time traceability by bridging gaps in confidence, data silos, distrust, shared credentials, and accountability. Understanding how to eliminate unnecessary layers of middlemen policy brokers and their rent seeking behaviors would provide further insights into how small enterprises and non-profit operate, their challenges or pitfalls, and how they can be improved to better manage the relevant systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How have local economic conditions been affected by the emergence of a global economy? What changes, if any, have local political authorities made to counterbalance the new emphasis on world interests? Comprehensive and timely, The New Localism answers these and other vital questions by exploring local political restructuring in the face of massive global economic change. Prominent urban scholars cover the privatization of local politics, the emergence of local economic and social activism, and increased competition--on both local and national levels. This important volume examines various levels of development in such diverse political settings as the United States, the United Kingdom, Eastern Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean. The New Localism is a must read for students and scholars of urban studies, comparative politics, political science, third world development, planning, public administration, and sociology. "Goetz and Clarke′s book brings a useful perspective to this literature, not so much because of its theoretical originality, but for its didactic value. It is a straightforward presentation of cases of urban restructuring, well integrated within a common conceptual framework labelled "new localism" --Canadian Journal of Urban Research

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research evaluates what the National Youths Service Corps members community perceives as their support needs in Nigeria in tackling poverty. It also analyses the process of leveraging policymaking, using social marketing techniques. It seeks a deeper understanding of the poverty elimination processes in Nigerian and beyond. A mixed-methods research design was adopted engaging a quantitative approach in which 351 NYSC members were surveyed using self-completion questionnaires. In addition, qualitative studies in which policy-makers as well as young people within the NYSC members community were interviewed. The main findings of the research reveal that young people: NYSC members support-needs in Nigeria are inadequate. A great deal more needed to be done. A Marshall-plan scale of support is required. The most significant causes of poverty amongst the NYSC members are absence of jobs, corruption of government officials, low wages, tribalism, oil pollution, natural disasters, IMF/World Bank conditionalities and wars. The main experiences of poverty include a high youth unemployment rate, No money to-go-to-school, No money to start small businesses, less food to eat, no money to treat sickness, no money to buy-clothes, no money to afford decent homes, prostitution, absence of a public transportation system as well as into-drugs and into-kidnapping.

Book excerpt: TRaditionally, mini grids have been viewed as “off-grid†? systems that are built and operated solely for communities without electricity. The reality, however, is that millions of people in Sub-Saharan Africa and India who are connected to the main grid suffer from poor grid reliability (“weak grid†?), sometimes with a power supply of less than 4 to 8 hours daily and with frequent disputes over the accuracy of billing. As a backstop, these poorly served customers often find themselves forced to rely on small fossil fuel†“powered generators that are noisy, polluting, and expensive to operate. Mini Grid Solutions for Underserved Customers: New Insights from Nigeria and India explores another option: undergrid mini grids. These are mostly solar hybrid†“powered mini grids built and operated by private companies in areas already connected with the main electricity grid but facing poor technical and commercial service. This comprehensive book examines how undergrid mini grids can create win-win-win outcomes for retail customers, distribution enterprises, and mini grid developers. Drawing on extensive discussions with pioneering developers, the book showcases detailed case studies from Nigeria and India, shedding light on the challenges and opportunities of interconnected and non-interconnected undergrid mini grids. The authors address technical issues of grid interconnection and delve into the policy and regulatory considerations crucial for the financial sustainability and success of undergrid mini grids. The book is an invaluable resource for policy makers, energy practitioners, and researchers seeking practical insights to bridge the electricity access gap, empower communities with reliable and affordable electricity, and drive environmentally and commercially sustainable development. • “The report is rich with insight, not least because the authors have been able to contrast the Nigeria and India approaches taken by the respective private sectors in each country. The five case studies are very valuable. The authors have powerfully illustrated the importance of the policy and regulatory framework and how that translates into investor behavior.†? — Mohua Mukherjee, Senior Research Fellow, Oxford Institute of Energy Studies • “This great report represents a pivotal turning point in the history of energy and has global implications for the role of mini grids for communities that have been poorly served by main grid utilities.†? — Peter Lilienthal, Founder HOMER Energy • “This is a tremendous addition to the literature on mini grids and an important guide for all of us practitioners working in this area.†? — James Sherwood, Director of Research & Innovation, RMI | Global South Program • “This refreshingly honest and open report provides an excellent overview of interconnected and isolated mini grids, as well as a thorough analysis of key ground-level implementation issues in regulation, business, and engineering.†? — Joanis Holzigel, Chief Operating Officer, INENSUS
