Book excerpt: Nordtest and SP Swedish National Testing and Research Institute (SP) have financed a study to draft a common Nordic test method to classify wood adhesives for structural purposes according to strength properties after fire exposure. The study has been planned and carried out in cooperation between SP and Norwegian Institute of Wood Technology (NTI) with participation of Otto Graf Institute in Germany (FMPA). Glulam beams produced with six different adhesives have been exposed to fire. Temperature distribution during the fire exposure test, weight loss and charring rate have been determined. Shear strength of glulines and wood have been determined and delamination tests have been carried out on samples exposed to fire and samples not exposed to fire. Short term shear strength and creep rupture tests at elevated temperature have been carried out on samples with wood adhesives used in the test. Preliminary calculations of temperature distributions during fire in wooden members protected against direct fire exposure by gypsum board have been made. The results of the study on beams not protected by gypsum indicate that a wood adhesive that has shown favourable results in a creep rupture test at elevated temperature (80 deg C) also will perform well during and after direct fire exposure. A static load test at elevated temperature can be used as an efficient and cheap method as an alternative to fire exposure tests of glued products for structural use. The results of the preliminary calculations on temperature distributions during fire exposure of gypsum protected smaller wood members indicate that under certain circumstances, the temperature can reach and stay at temperatures above 120 deg C for a longer period of time. An additional test at higher temperature could be needed for adhesives intended for such structures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A relatively simple test procedure was developed to evaluate the behavior of various adhesives near fire-exposed surfaces in laminated constructions. A number of sections cut from laminated blocks were exposed to fire on one surface. After this exposure, the sections were transversely cut, and the gluelines were examined for separation depth. In addition, the cool specimens were broken along the glue joints so as to be able to determine the residual bonded area. An equation incorporating both the separation depth and the residual bonded area at the joints was utilized to obtain a gbsdegradation indexgcs on which adhesive behavior near fire-exposed surfaces can be quantitatively based. This index was used to make a preliminary grouping of the behavior under fire of six types of adhesives in laminated sections of Douglas-fir and southern pine.

Book excerpt: Prepared by the Subcommittee on Evaluation, Maintenance, and Upgrading of Timber Structures of the Committee on Wood of the Structural Division of ASCE. This report presents information on technical aspects of inspection, evaluation, reinforcement, repair, and rehabilitation of timber structures. Any structure, regardless of the material from which it is made, may be subject to a review of its ability to perform a specific function or functions. This report reviews factors that influence the serviceability of wood structures, including loadings, duration of loads, temperature, moisture and weathering. Effects of chemicals and fire, as well as insects, fungi, and other organisms that attack wood are also covered. Designing to avoid problems caused by these factors is discussed. Inspection techniques and equipment are described, along with guidelines on where to look and what to look for. A section of evaluation of wood structures includes criteria such as structural analysis, determination of loads, and estimating load carrying capacity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A model was developed for predicting the statistical distribution of glued-laminated beam strength and stiffness under normal temperature conditions using available long span modulus of elasticity data, end joint tension test data, and tensile strength data for laminating-grade lumber. The beam strength model predictions compared favorably with test data for glued-laminated beam strength data with 8 and 10 laminations; however, the model predicted strength values 30 percent higher for glued-laminated beam strength data with 4 laminations. Fire endurance and structural resistance were evaluated by artificially reducing the cross section. This reduction accounts for char depth as well as for reduced wood strength caused by the elevated temperature. Average time-to-failure predictions using the developed model compared well with those from conventional prediction methods.

Book excerpt: Adhesive bonding plays an increasing role in the forest product industry and is a key factor for efficiently utilizing timber and other lignocellulosic resources. As synthetic wood adhesives are mostly derived from depleting petrochemical resources and have caused increasing environmental concern, natural product and byproduct-derived adhesives have attracted much attention in the last decades. Although adhesives made from plant and animal sources have been in existence since ancient times, increased knowledge of their chemistry and improved technical formulation of their preparation are still needed to promote their broader industrial applications. The primary goals of this book are to (1) synthesize the fundamental knowledge and latest research on bio-based adhesives from a remarkable range of natural products and byproducts, (2) identify need areas and provide directions of future bio-based adhesive research, and (3) help integrating research findings in practical adhesive application for maximal benefits. This book covers information on a variety of natural products and byproducts and the latest research on formulation, testing and improvement of the relevant adhesives in fifteen chapters written by an international group of accomplished contributors. This book will serve as a valuable reference source for university faculty, graduate students, research scientists, agricultural and wood engineers, international organization advocators and government agency regulators who work and deal with enhanced utilization of agricultural and forest products and byproducts.

Book excerpt: Analytical procedures to predict the fire endurance of structural wood members have been developed worldwide. This research is reviewed for capability to predict the results of tests in North America and what considerations are necessary to apply the information here. Critical research needs suggested include: (1) Investigation of load levels used in reported tests, and parameters in analyses, for application to North American practice; (2) the effect of lumber grade on wood property response at elevated temperature; and (3) further effort in reliability-based design procedures so that the safety of fire-exposed members and assemblies may be determined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The degradable nature of high-performance, wood-based materials is an attractive advantage when considering environmental factors such as sustainability, recycling, and energy/resource conservation. The Handbook of Wood Chemistry and Wood Composites provides an excellent guide to the latest concepts and technologies in wood chemistry and bio-based composites. The book analyzes the chemical composition and physical properties of wood cellulose and its response to natural processes of degradation. It describes safe and effective chemical modifications to strengthen wood against biological, chemical, and mechanical degradation without using toxic, leachable, or corrosive chemicals. Expert researchers provide insightful analyses of the types of chemical modifications applied to polymer cell walls in wood, emphasizing the mechanisms of reaction involved and resulting changes in performance properties. These include modifications that increase water repellency, fire retardancy, and resistance to ultraviolet light, heat, moisture, mold, and other biological organisms. The text also explores modifications that increase mechanical strength, such as lumen fill, monomer polymer penetration, and plasticization. The Handbook of Wood Chemistry and Wood Composites concludes with the latest applications, such as adhesives, geotextiles, and sorbents, and future trends in the use of wood-based composites in terms of sustainable agriculture, biodegradability and recycling, and economics. Incorporating over 30 years of teaching experience, the esteemed editor of this handbook is well-attuned to educational demands as well as industry standards and research trends.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strength, elastic properties, load duration and creep were measured following exposure to temperatures and stresses expected during service life. Temperature-stress exposure reduced strength properties. High testing temperature reduced strength and low temperature raised strength. Shear elastic modulus was quite stable in the range 10 to 160deg F ( -12 to 71deg C) but increased markedly at lower temperatures. Long time loading caused a larger strength reduction for the adhesive than we expect to observe for wood. This load duration effect was larger at elevated temperature. Adhesive creep was similar to wood creep but greater at 70deg F (21deg C), increasing more at 160deg F (71deg C).
