Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Has there ever been a time when you ever said the following words: Oh Lord give me strength? Was there ever a time when it seemed as if your strength was "failing" or "leaving" you? The weighted "blocks of life" are continually falling down on you, and you feel no relief at all. Your "tank of tolerance" is also at an all time low, and on top of that your "day-to-day" items in the "stuff bag" called "life" is just about full. Well, I have great news for you! Where your "strength" falls short, God's strength stands up! For the bible declares in II Corinthians 12:9, "My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness." In fact, Jesus has a 100% guarantee on any affliction, struggle or trial you may be experiencing. This 100% guarantee is by way of the "Afflictions Benefits Package." The Lord defines it in these terms in Psalm 34:19, "Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all." In other words, it's a "fixed fight" and a for sure win despite the hardships encountered. Each morning that heaven claps it's hands and says "wake up," we've got to know that we are on God's mind. He's ready to give us the assurance, guidance, and strength that we need for our journey through all life's struggles.

Are we considered strong if we do not fall when life pushes us to the ground? Do our faith and belief tell us that we cannot let our misery affect us because as the saying goes, “we must bear patience”? In this book, author Liyana Musfirah takes readers on a reflective journey of discovering the strength that emerges from each of our painful and scarring episodes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immigration to America is an issue that often sparks intense emotional reactions_from passion and compassion to anger and even rage. Often missing from the dialogue, however, is discussion of the strengths of immigrant newcomers_the abilities and positive characteristics they bring as individuals and families to our country, and how these contribute to the agency, growth, and vitality of America. This book was intended to move the discussion of immigration, generally speaking, and of immigrant families specifically, to include how and in what ways new immigrants to America (those arriving within the past thirty years) have changed the social and geocultural landscape of this country in positive, beneficial, and valuable ways. The book is comprised of nineteen chapters written by scholars with expertise on immigrant families representing every corner of the globe_from Africa and India to Europe and Central America. In each chapter, the unique factors, processes, and worldviews which help shape and mold the immigrant experience are articulated, as are the strengths immigrant newcomers bring to America. In addition, beyond explicating the strengths of immigrant families, each of the nineteen contributing chapters focuses on the implications of these strengths for families, communities, and the culture. Thus, the book provides a springboard from which to answer the application and 'what now' questions for those who work with immigrant families in a variety of capacities_from academicians and researchers to educators and human-service providers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wind energy is often portrayed as a panacea for the environmental and political ills brought on by an overreliance on fossil fuels, but this characterization may ignore the impact wind farms have on the regions that host them. Power Struggles investigates the uneven allocation of risks and benefits in the relationship between the regions that produce this energy and those that consume it. Jaume Franquesa considers Spain, a country where wind now constitutes the main source of energy production. In particular, he looks at the Southern Catalonia region, which has traditionally been a source of energy production through nuclear reactors, dams, oil refineries, and gas and electrical lines. Despite providing energy that runs the country, the region is still forced to the political and economic periphery as the power they produce is controlled by centralized, international Spanish corporations. Local resistance to wind farm installation in Southern Catalonia relies on the notion of dignity: the ability to live within one's means and according to one's own decisions. Power Struggles shows how, without careful attention, renewable energy production can reinforce patterns of exploitation even as it promises a fair and hopeful future.

Book excerpt: This compelling example of auto-ethnography follows the journey of a psychologist pursuing her career in apartheid-era South Africa—and reappraising her work and her worldview in the post-apartheid years. The author describes her development of a human rights perspective, rooted in an understanding of power dynamics in contexts of oppression, privilege and inequality, as it evolved from theory to real-life practice in academia and the community. Key themes include embedding core principles of social justice, and of learning and teaching, in community practice and policy work, and maximizing community action and participation in participatory action research. And in addition to her recommendations for ethical practice and professional development, the author’s self-reflexive presentation models necessary steps for readers to take in building their own careers. Among the topics covered: Self-reflections on power relations in community practice. Learning about the decolonial lens. Empowerment as transformative practice. Policy work during post-apartheid years. Developing teaching and learning theories and practices. Power and Identity in the Struggle for Social Justice will act as both an interesting and a valuable resource for people working or planning to work with people in various community contexts. This includes psychologists who practice community psychology, social workers, and other community practitioners, particularly in social development, health, and education settings.
