Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A celebration of men's voices in prayer--through the ages from many faiths, cultures and traditions. "If men like us don't pray, where will emerging generations get a window into the soul of a good man, an image of the kind of man they can aspire to be--or be with--when they grow up? If men don't pray, who will model for them the practices of soul care--of gratitude, confession, compassion, humility, petition, repentance, grief, faith, hope and love? If men don't pray, what will men become, and what will become of our world and our future?" --from the Introduction by Brian D. McLaren This collection celebrates the profound variety of ways men around the world have called out to the Divine--with words of joy, praise, gratitude, wonder, petition and even anger--from the ancient world up to our own day. The prayers come from a broad spectrum of spiritual traditions--both East and West--including Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and more. Together they provide an eloquent expression of men's inner lives, and of the practical, mysterious, painful and joyous endeavor that prayer is. Men Pray will challenge your preconceived ideas about prayer. It will inspire you to explore new ways of prayerful expression and new possibilities for your own spiritual journey. This is a book to treasure and to share. Includes prayers from: Marcus Aurelius * Daniel Berrigan * Rebbe Nachman of Breslov * Walter Brueggemann * Bernard of Clairvaux * St. Francis of Assisi * Robert Frost * George Herbert * Gerard Manley Hopkins * St. Ignatius Loyola * Fr. Thomas Keating * Thomas à Kempis * Chief Yellow Lark * Brother Lawrence * C. S. Lewis * Ted Loder * Nelson Mandela * General Douglas MacArthur * Thomas Merton * D. L. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We must view life as if each day is the first day of the rest of our lives. We should keep an outlook in our minds about life, as each day is the opportunity for a new start. We must learn to live each day to the fullest, and we can do that only if we learn to accept that we cannot change the past. We cannot stop a tragedy from entering our lives. We have to accept what has happened, accept the new person we have become by the tragedy that has entered our life and love ourselves no matter what. No one is perfect. The present is now, and we hold the key to the future. It is time to create the new you. Happiness and success come with persistence and hard work. You must have a goal and work hard. Follow your hearts to true happiness. You must have a destination, a goal and a plan. You are special. You can be anything you want to be. It is your turn to love yourself. The poems in this book will give you the faith, hope, courage and strength to be happy and love life. If you cannot find happiness in the present, you will never find it in the future. Those who find true happiness pursue the goal of achieving as much success and finding as much happiness as possible every day of their lives. Many people think that happiness lies in how much material wealth you accumulate. Nevertheless, we must find happiness within ourselves? not in the external world. Happiness comes from within and from making others happy. Each day, we have a new opportunity to find happiness; and unless we are able to learn to be happy on a day-to-day basis, we will probably never find true happiness. There are situations, when we find ourselves trapped, full of anger, not knowing where to turn or what to do. The anger of losing control of our lives. You may feel like life is meaningless, and happiness is no longer an option. My poems will show you otherwise. I will show you through my poetry that there is no reason to be angry. Love yourself as your loved ones love you. Life is meaningless unless you can love, be happy and bring your happiness to others. As you read my poetry, you will see a completely new meaning of life. In addition, faith will once again be a part of your life.

Book excerpt: Life Is Never Mainly About Love and Marriage. So Learn to Live and Date for More. Many of you grew up assuming that marriage would meet all of your needs and unlock God's purposes for you. But God has far more planned for you than your future marriage. Not Yet Married is not about waiting quietly in the corner of the world for God to bring you "the one," but about inspiring you to live and date for more now. If you follow Jesus, the search for a spouse is no longer a pursuit of the perfect person, but a pursuit of more of God. He will likely write a love story for you different than the one you would write for yourself, but that's because he loves you and knows how to write a better story. This book was written to help you find real hope, happiness, and purpose in your not-yet-married life.

Carolyn's unwavering faith in God shined a light into every corner. Her determination to live a life according to Him no matter what life threw her way became an inspiration for so many to follow. This steadfastness would prove to be the strongest foundation for Carolyn and her family as she entered the greatest test of her life and faith: battling cancer. In this book, Keishay Moore collects memories and moments from her mother's life and fight with cancer to show how faith and family can provide hope in even the darkest of days. These truthful, authentic, and empowering moments combine to provide hope and perspective to those who have been, or are currently being, impacted by cancer. As she transitions from the role of "daughter" to "caregiver," Keishay shows that by finding refuge in the Lord, He will provide the strength and encouragement to triumph over all things.

Book excerpt: The Courage to Be introduced issues of theology and culture to a general readership. The book examines ontic, moral, and spiritual anxieties across history and in modernity. The author defines courage as the self-affirmation of one's being in spite of a threat of nonbeing. He relates courage to anxiety, anxiety being the threat of non-being and the courage to be what we use to combat that threat. Tillich outlines three types of anxiety and thus three ways to display the courage to be. Tillich writes that the ultimate source of the courage to be is the "God above God," which transcends the theistic idea of God and is the content of absolute faith (defined as "the accepting of the acceptance without somebody or something that accepts").

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher education in the twenty-first century should bring together freedom and knowledge with courage and hope. Why these four concepts? As Goodson argues in Strength of Mind, higher education in the twenty-first century offers preparation for ordinary life. Freedom and knowledge serve as the conditions for cultivating courage and hope within one’s ordinary life. More specifically, courage and hope ought to be understood as the virtues required for enjoying ordinary life. If college-educated citizens wish to hold onto the concepts of courage and hope, however, then both courage and hope need to be understood as intellectual virtues. As a moral virtue, courage has become outdated. As a theological virtue, hope violates the logic of the golden mean. Focusing on intellectual virtues also requires shifting from moral perfectionism to rational perfectionism. Rational perfectionism involves keeping impossible demands in view for oneself while constantly and continually striving for one’s “unattained but attainable self.” Goodson defends these arguments by learning from the bits of wisdom found within American Transcendentalism (Emerson, Cavell), German Idealism (Kant, Hegel), Jewish philosophy (Maimonides, Spinoza, Putnam), neo-pragmatism (Putnam, Rorty, West), post-modern theories about pedagogy (Nietzsche, Foucault, Rorty), and secular accounts of perfectionism (Murdoch, Cavell).

This is the inspiring memoir of Cesia Sugarfine, a Holocaust survivor, whose life’s journey took her through unimaginable trials, but whose unyielding will to live and love conquered inconceivable odds. Her memoir stands as a lasting reminder of the systematic annihilation of the Jews in Europe during the Holocaust. It unequivocally challenges the falsehoods peddled by Holocaust deniers, shedding light on the historical truth and the brutalities that took place. In a world where anti-Semitism remains a pressing concern, Cesia’s story serves as a call to action. By sharing her experiences, the hope is to educate future generations about events from the past. History isn’t always comfortable. Through education and remembrance, we can combat prejudice and racism and strive to ensure that the phrase “never again” becomes a reality.

Book excerpt: Women of the Bible, richly illustrated with classic art and vivid photography, looks at the women who defined life and civilization as we know it. This book includes all their stories presented in clear accessible prose that shows great respect for this remarkable collection of influential women. These are the women who played critical roles in the Bible, the greatest story ever told, the record of God’s relationship to humanity from the beginning of time. Some were foundational, like Eve, the first, the original, the mother of us all; others, like Bathsheba and Mary Magdalene, were redeemed by God from lives of sin; still more, like the transcendent Mary, mother of Jesus, remain symbols of fidelity to and acceptance of the will of God. Many, like Sarah, the mother of Isaac, used cleverness and guile to make their way in a world dominated by men; a few, like Delilah, the betrayer of Samson, were unrepentant villains. Sidebars provide surveys of the women who achieved sainthood as well as those, like Lot’s wife and the wife of Pontius Pilate, who were never named but had an impact nonetheless. This book will inspire readers to live their best lives.
