The procedure is a combination of results produced through recent work sponsored by the Corps of Engineers and recent studies sponsored by the American Concrete Pipe Association. The SD procedure accounts for both flexure and shear in buried circular conduits subjected to the uniform loading conditions of Engineer Manual 1110-2-2902. Expressions are included that account for the effects of concrete compressive strength and radial tension. A criterion for limiting the flexural reinforcement ration to prevent unacceptable crack width is also included. This organized presentation of the procedure will enable designers to evaluate further the application of recent research to real problems, with the goal of improving the Corps' SD methods. Book excerpt: Various analytical and experimental aspects of the US Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station concrete pipe test program were studied in an effort to maximize the returns from this project. Methods of flexural strength prediction, based on both elastic and plastic approaches, are presented and applied to the test specimens. Different approaches to determination of flexural strength are critically discussed, and the applicability of each approach is checked by comparison with test results. Graphical longhand design methods and uses are presented and explained by examples. These approaches are intended to provide the basis for future computerized design tools. The shear strength of concrete rings under various loading conditions is explored, using several available methods. Since these methods seem unable to predict the shear strength of rings under distributed loads, the need for further study along these lines might be helpful. However, the apparent fact that shear will not be critical in concrete pipe in the ground may deem this in fact a nonproblem. Further necessary research directions for optimal design of concrete pipe are noted. (FR).

Book excerpt: The effect of initial curvature on the trust-moment characteristics of reinforced concrete circular conduit sections was investigated. This study was undertaken since conduit sections built by the Corps of Engineers are often so sharply curved relative to their thicknesses that initial curvature effects might be significant. The effect of initial curvature was investigated through curved beam, Airy stress function, and nonlinear finite element analyses. In addition, three model conduits representative of Corps construction were instrumented and simultaneously loaded on eight equally spaced diameters. For the range of design variables investigated, the analytical and experimental results indicate that initial curvature has no statistical significant effects. Further testing will be needed to obtain a larger statistical sample and evaluate the effects of more extreme curvatures than studied in this report.
