Book Synopsis Vertebrate Paleontology in Utah by : David D. Gillette
Download or read book Vertebrate Paleontology in Utah written by David D. Gillette and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 1999 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 52 papers in this vary in content from summaries or state-of-knowledge treatments, to detailed contributions that describe new species. Although the distinction is subtle, the title (Vertebrate Paleontology in Utah) indicates the science of paleontology in the state of Utah, rather than the even more ambitious intent if it were given the title “Vertebrate Paleontology of Utah” which would promise an encyclopedic treatment of the subject. The science of vertebrate paleontology in Utah is robust and intense. It has grown prodigiously in the past decade, and promises to continue to grow indefinitely. This research benefits everyone in the state, through Utah’s muse ums and educational institutions, which are the direct beneficiaries.

Book Synopsis The Historical Archaeology of Virginia from Initial Settlement to the Present by : Clarence R. Geier
Download or read book The Historical Archaeology of Virginia from Initial Settlement to the Present written by Clarence R. Geier and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-02-10 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book includes six chapters that cover Virginia history from initial settlement through the 20th century plus one that deals with the important role of underwater archaeology. Written by prominent archaeologists with research experience in their respective topic areas, the chapters consider important issues of Virginia history and consider how the discipline of historic archaeology has addressed them and needs to address them . Changes in research strategy over time are discussed , and recommendations are made concerning the need to recognize the diverse and often differing roles and impacts that characterized the different regions of Virginia over the course of its historic past. Significant issues in Virginia history needing greater study are identified.

Book Synopsis Miocene Stratigraphy by : A. Montanari
Download or read book Miocene Stratigraphy written by A. Montanari and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1997-06-18 with total page 713 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrated stratigraphy is essential for⧫ detailed paleoecologic studies of critical intervals in Earth history⧫ the calibration of the time scale for global use⧫ the establishment of Global Stratotype Sections and Points (GSSPs) for the definition of chronostratigraphic boundaries. This book constitutes an excellent and probably unique example of how interdisciplinary stratigraphic and geochronologic studies are approached with modern methodologies and techniques. It contains numerous unpublished, accurate radioisotopic dates of volcano-sedimentary layers interbedded in fossiliferous marine and continental Miocene sequences representing Mediterranean and Pacific environments. New, extremely detailed paleontologic data which constitute the basis for an accurate definition of the Miocene biostratigraphy, and the study of the ecologic evolution of Miocene marine environments are also included. The chapters are complimented by black-and-white photographs, graphic figures, and tables.Stratigraphers, paleontologists and sedimentologists plus geologists working in oil companies will certainly find this work of interest.

Book Synopsis Consensus Preferred Recurrence-interval and Vertical Slip-rate Estimates by : William R. Lund
Download or read book Consensus Preferred Recurrence-interval and Vertical Slip-rate Estimates written by William R. Lund and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 2005-06-30 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of the Utah Quaternary Fault Parameters Working Group (hereafter referred to as the Working Group) review and evaluation of Utah’s Quaternary fault paleoseismic-trenching data. The purpose of the review was to (1) critically evaluate the accuracy and completeness of the paleoseismictrenching data, particularly regarding earthquake timing and displacement, (2) where the data permit, assign consensus, preferred recurrence-interval (RI) and vertical slip-rate (VSR) estimates with appropriate confidence limits to the faults/fault sections under review, and (3) identify critical gaps in the paleoseismic data and recommend where and what kinds of additional paleoseismic studies should be performed to ensure that Utah’s earthquake hazard is adequately documented and understood. It is important to note that, with the exception of the Great Salt Lake fault zone, the Working Group’s review was limited to faults/fault sections having paleoseismic-trenching data. Most Quaternary faults/fault sections in Utah have not been trenched, but many have RI and VSR estimates based on tectonic geomorphology or other non-trench-derived studies. Black and others compiled the RI and VSR data for Utah’s Quaternary faults, both those with and without trenches.
Book Synopsis Practices of Archaeological Stratigraphy by : Edward C. Harris
Download or read book Practices of Archaeological Stratigraphy written by Edward C. Harris and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practices of Archaeological Stratigraphy brings together a number of examples which illustrate the development and use of the Harris Matrix in describing and interpreting archaeological sites. This matrix, the theory of which is described in two editions of the previous book by Harris, Principles of Archaeological Stratigaphy, made possible for the first time a simple diagramatic representation of the strategraphic sequence of a site, no matter how complex. The Harris Matrix, by showing in one diagram all three linear dimensions, plus time, represents a quantum leap over the older methods which relied on sample sections only.In this book 17 essays present a sample of new work demonstrating the strengths and uses of the Harris Matrix, the first ever published collection of papers devoted solely to stratigraphy in archaeology. The crucial relationships between the Harris methods, open-area excavation techniques, the interpretation of interfaces, and the use of single-context plans and recording sheets, is clarified by reference to specific sites. These sites range from medieval Europe, through Mayan civilizations to Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. This book will be of great value to all those involved in excavating and recording archaeological sites and should help to ensure that the maximum amount of stratigraphic information can be gathered from future investigations.* Presents case studies which illuminate the Harris matrix method, invented by Edward C. Harris* Senior editor is the inventor of this method and principle in the field* Serves as a companion volume to Harris's Principles of Archaeological Stratigraphy
