Book excerpt: In an era that has brought new and unexpected challenges for virtually every company, one would be hard-pressed to find any responsible manager who is not thinking about what the future will bring. In the wake of these challenges, strategic planning has moved from being the reserve of large corporations to becoming an essential need for even small and medium-sized enterprises. But what good is even the most convincing strategic concept if the company’s people are unwilling or unable to put it into practice? The key is to develop people, and to develop them not only for the work of today, but also for the challenges that the future holds. Strategic HR development has become a decisive force for the success of any business. This book, edited by Matthias T. Meifert, shows us which basic considerations we need to remember and what strategic HR development means in practice. Its interesting and vivid approach takes the reader on a tour of the eight stages of HR development, introduces the critical factors, and highlights many practical recommendations for strategic HR development practice in business.

Book excerpt: `This is one of very few texts to give recognition to the difficulties in large institutions and to give practical advice about the degree to which collegiality can be built into strategic planning. The authors provide an overview of all aspects of leadership within education, giving ample references within each section for more detailed study′ - Mentoring and Tutoring `The book would constitute a good starting-point for anyone wishing to understand contemporary developments in educational management′ - Educational Research Leadership and strategic management are both issues of central importance in raising achievement in schools and colleges and thus are at the heart of the educational debate today. This book is concerned with such major issues as: the nature of strategic management in education; the importance of vision, and mission; styles of leadership; models of educational management; and the purposes of strategic management, which here are equated with the effectiveness and improvement of the institution. It will be invaluable for students of educational management, such as those following masters degrees. It is also directly relevant to teachers and lecturers and schools of all phases and in further education colleges, particularly those who have, or aspire to, management responsibilities. The textbook is designed to be used either to accompany a taught course, or for self-study via distance-learning, thus practical and reflective activities are included.

Book excerpt: This new collection of readings draws together three major and interrelated priorities for the educational manager: developing and maintaining quality, using resources effectively, and establishing a strategic overview and direction for the organization. In explaining these three concerns, the book aims to help educational managers to improve their own practice, by encouraging critical reflection on management processes and on how conceptual frameworks and research evidence can contribute to more effective professional performance in schools and colleges. The collection has a strongly practical flavour, focusing on frameworks, ideas and approaches that teachers can test out and develop in their own professional contexts. It includes material based on a wide range of educational settings, enabling managers to transcend sector boundaries in their thinking and to draw on insights from other sectors. This volume forms part of the Leadership and Management in Education series. This four book series provides a carefully chosen selection of high quality readings on key contemporary themes in educational management: professional development, reflection on practice, leadership, team working, effectiveness and improvement, quality, strategy and resources. The series will be an important resource for classroom teachers and lecturers as well as those holding designated management posts in schools and colleges and will provide a valuable basis for professional development programmes.
