La guerre Iran-Irak, l'invasion du Koweït, la guerre du Golfe, le conflit permanent israélo-palestinien, l'occupation américaine de l'Irak, la déstabilisation du Liban et l'enjeu syrien, le drame du Darfour, autant de crises et de conflits dans lesquels le pays est sol-licité. Une instabilité régionale chronique où la diplomatie secrète égyptienne joue les médiateurs en coulisse. Officiellement elle tend vers un apaisement des tensions, un règlement des contentieux et un rapprochement politique entre les dirigeants arabes divisés. Toutefois, si un changement démocratique s'opérait en Egypte, il pourrait s'étendre à l'ensemble du monde arabo-musulman.
