Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social housing - public, non-profit, or co-operative - was once a part of Canada's urban success story. After years of neglect and many calls for affordable homes and solutions to homelessness, housing is once again an important issue. In Still Renovating, Greg Suttor tells the story of the rise and fall of Canadian social housing policy. Focusing on the main turning points through the past seven decades, and the forces that shaped policy, this volume makes new use of archival sources and interviews, pays particular attention to institutional momentum, and describes key housing programs. The analysis looks at political change, social policy trends, housing market conditions, and game-changing decisions that altered the approaches of Canadian governments, their provincial partners, and the local agencies they supported. Reinterpreting accounts written in the social housing heyday, Suttor argues that the 1970s shift from low-income public housing to community-based non-profits and co-ops was not the most significant change, highlighting instead the tenfold expansion of activity in the 1960s and the collapse of social housing as a policy priority in the 1990s. As housing and neighbourhood issues continue to flare up in municipal, provincial, and national politics, Still Renovating is a valuable resource on Canada’s distinctive legacy in affordable housing.

This report deals with housing and neighbourhoods on or close to the lakeshore of Metropolitan Toronto, from Etobicoke Creek in the west to the mouth of the Rouge River at the eastern end, within the boundaries of the Regional Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto at the regional level, and the cities of Scarborough, Toronto, and Etobicoke. The report addresses the waterfront population and housing stock; the current policies, plans and initiatives of the federal and provincial governments and the municipal governments of Metro Toronto, City of Toronto, City of Etobicoke and City of Scarborough. The issues of housing and neighbourhood presence, affordability, mixed use, infrastructure and community facilities, environmental clean-up, planning and design controls, and government coordination and accountability are addressed, concluding in recommendations for both new and existing neighbourhoods.
Book Synopsis Governmental Response to Environmental Challenges in Global Perspective by : Joseph G. Jabbra
Download or read book Governmental Response to Environmental Challenges in Global Perspective written by Joseph G. Jabbra and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In our drive to improve human standards of living, we have paradoxically paid scant attention to the need for clean air and water; the impact of acid rain on agriculture, lakes and rivers; the effect of pollutants on the ozone layer; the safe disposal of hazardous wastes, and the relationship between population growth and the environment. It seems that every time governments are faced with an apparent choice between economic development and the protection of the environment, priority is always given to the former. Short-term plans -- dictated by canons of political survival and expediency -- always seem to take precedence over long-term strategies, with politicians and decision-makers deftly relegating environmental concerns to the realm of rhetoric. This book is an effort to better understand the problems faced by our global ecosystems. It is also the result of the authors deep commitment to urge both citizens and their leaders the world over to work together for a better protection of the environment so that our planet may be saved for the present and for future generations.
