Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A book that aims to identify the core problems facing African universities and to examine the potential role of strategic planning in addressing them. It reviews global, regional and national development trends in higher education, and identifies problems within the areas of human resources, organisational culture, physical resources, municipal services, governance, financial resources, and quality and quantity of academic and professional outputs. The authors then provide examples from the University of Dar es Salaam's experience and transition programmes to demonstrate how the adoption of a strategic planning and management culture can address the principal common areas of concern. The book is organised into sections covering: higher education management, historical perspectives of planning at the University of Dar es Salaam; strategic planning in higher education institutions; the development of corporate strategic plans; development of the university's five-year rolling strategic plans; strategic planning and the catalysts of the University of Dar es Salaam's transformations; and strategic planning transformations; and strategic planning in African universities, constraints and prospects. The final section also presents experiences from eight other African universities which are known to have adopted strategic planning, and assesses how these universities are addressing core problems. Universities included in the study are Moi; Makerere; Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah; Zambia, Eduardo Mondlane, Botswana and Namibia. The authors are professors in telecommunications, linguistics and environmental engineering.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Challenge of Change in Africa's Higher Education in the 21st Century brings the reader face to face with the mega challenges and key opportunities in Africa's higher education sector in the twenty-first century. Mwenda and Muuka are two of Africa's emergent scholars, with 20 published books and over 100 articles published in peer-reviewed journals between them as of 2008. Authors who are diverse in their knowledge and experience of the complexities of education in Africa join Mwenda and Muuka in this treatise, which traverses the higher education milieu on the continent from Cape Town in South Africa to Lagos in Nigeria. Stated simply, those who have long called for a new generation of scholars on education in Africa will find a healthy and refreshing answer in The Challenge of Change in Africa's Higher Education in the 21st Century. The motivation for this book was the editors' recognition of gaps in the current understanding of higher education in Africa. The book has clear advantages and defining features over other books on higher education on the continent in the following respects. The Challenge of Change in Africa's Higher Education in the 21st Century is a book written from and with twenty-first century realities, making it a significant addition to the continuing and urgent search for solutions to the continent's development dilemma. It is therefore critical reading and research material for many stakeholders including students, professors, universities, and research libraries on the one hand and higher education ministries in Africa on the other. The role of international development agencies and non-governmental organizations towards enhancement of higher education in Africa cannot be overemphasized.

Book Synopsis Transforming Higher Education in Asia and Africa by : Fred M. Hayward
Download or read book Transforming Higher Education in Asia and Africa written by Fred M. Hayward and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2020-03-01 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on over fifty years of on-the-ground experience, Fred M. Hayward's Transforming Higher Education in Asia and Africa analyzes change processes in higher education in eight Asian and African countries. The twelve cases range from the push to upgrade and transform higher education in Afghanistan in the midst of a war, to the successful struggle against apartheid in South African institutions, as well as thwarted efforts in Sierra Leone and Madagascar. Providing both practical lessons learned and hope for communities globally, Hayward demonstrates that higher education change and even transformation, which is more fundamental and structural, can occur even in the most difficult environments. Successful transformation requires well-crafted strategic and budget plans with careful implementation, monitoring, and effective leadership at multiple levels. Yet also critical are a commitment to human development, a desire for freedom and belief in democracy, and recognition that high-quality higher education is essential to national development.
