Book excerpt: Previous research focused either on the relationship between strategic planning and performance or coordination mechanisms and performance. Therefore, a conceptually and empirically validated understanding of the interaction between these three factors is limited. This study addresses this gap in the literature by delivering three contributions to theory and empirical research: firstly, by clarifying and proposing the influences of strategic planning and strategic organization on the performance; secondly, by developing a model and associated hypotheses on both direct and interaction effects of strategic planning and coordination mechanisms; and thirdly, by testing the hypotheses. Findings regarding strategic planning suggest the coexistence of formal and informal strategic planning activities. Furthermore, results show that the relationship between strategic planning and performance is moderated by coordination mechanisms.

Book excerpt: Evaluation is a critical stage in urban and regional planning and development, with the consideration of alternative proposals essential for informed debate and decision. Evaluation in planning has become even more important with the new paradigm attempting to integrate economic efficiency with equity, sustainability and social responsibility. The craft of pre-development evaluation has long been influenced by Nathaniel Lichfield, and in his honour, this book brings together prominent researchers and practitioners to discuss evaluation in planning: its conceptual foundations and subsequent development, its strengths and persisting dilemmas, and its best practices and their potential for improving future planning and development. The chapters trace evaluation in planning from its historical origin to current applications. Part one reviews the evolution of evaluation theory and practice, and part two contains a selection of best-practice application. The final integrating chapter notes key problems, and offers directions for future development in evaluation research and practice.

Addiction Press was set up with the express purpose of communicating current ideas and evidence in this expanding field, not only to researchers and practising health professionals, but also to policy makers, students and interested non-specialists. These publications are designed to address the significant challenges that addiction presents to modern society. The drugs field has undergone a phase of rapid change in recent years and all the non-medical treatment interventions for those with alcohol problems and dependence can be equally helpful for drug users. This has opened the way for unification of alcohol and drug treatment services at a clinical level, with potential for more efficient service provision and for effective interventions which can be readily adopted in a wide range of settings. Modern drug and alcohol services and all professionals working with substance users will benefit from the initiatives and procedures discussed in this book. Key features * Describes a wide range of treatments for young people and adults with drug and alcohol dependence * Integrates alcohol and drug prevention and treatment * Provides an invaluable and accessible guide for many different professionals * Sets out assessment criteria, questionnaires, and a joint treatment framework

Meinhart and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph examines how the three Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff adapted and used the Joint Strategic Planning System from 1990 to 2000 to provide advice to the Secretary of Defense and to the President. This strategic planning system is the primary formal means by which the Chairman executes his statutory responsibilities specified by Congress in Title 10 U.S. Code. Understanding this strategic planning system's evolution, reviewing its processes, and examining its products gives one great insight into how the three Chairmen provided direction that shaped the military to respond to the rapidly changing strategic environment of the 1990s. Senior leaders can learn from this comprehensive strategic planning and leadership review to enable them to better use a strategic planning system to transform their organizations for the future.
