Book excerpt: This document is the LMC's recommendation on goals and objectives for Lake Michigan's fish community. The intent of this document is to provide a framework for future decision making. Although seemingly straightforward, consensus management of complex systems like Lake Michigan is challenging. Scientific understanding of the ecology of the lake will always be incomplete. Managers, their clients (participants in the fishery), and others concerned about the lake will contimually face uncertainty about the best management policies. Establishment of fish-community objectives will help define a unified direction and purpose for the multitude of management activities occurring around the lake. Also, this document will focus attention on important issues and help communicate priorities to fishery and environmental managers, researchers, and public-policy makers.

It carries forward the singular contribution that the binational Great Lakes scientific community has made not only to restoring the Great Lakes but also to the world's body of knowledge about large lake ecology, the long-range transport of pollutants, and the importance of habitat in ensuring ecosystem health.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To maintain thriving, sustainable fisheries in the Laurentian Great Lakes, an understanding of the numerous and complex ecological, societal, economic, management, and policy issues surrounding them is critical. This incisive study provides a collaborative, interjurisdictional, and multi-use perspective that is shaped by the United states and Canada together as part of their shared governance of these waters. This book offers an informed look at the Great Lakes fisheries and their ecosystems, as the contributors examine both the threats they have faced and the valuable opportunities they provide for basin citizens and industries. Divided into four sections--the Great Lakes region, Great Lakes Fisheries, Fisheries case studies, and outlook for the Future--this is a valuable and up-to-date tool for students, researchers, policymakers, and managers alike.

Book Synopsis Longitudinal Structure of Fish Communities and Species Habitat Associations in Green Bay, Lake Michigan Tributaries by : Cynthia I. Nau
Download or read book Longitudinal Structure of Fish Communities and Species Habitat Associations in Green Bay, Lake Michigan Tributaries written by Cynthia I. Nau and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small, lower-order (1st-3rd) tributaries of the Great Lakes, including those of Green Bay and Lake Michigan, have been largely understudied relative to the open water and large rivers in the region. Nonetheless, recent research suggests that these aquatic ecosystems may play a vial role as reproductive, nursery, and foraging habitat for the highly varied assemblage of fish species resident to the area. Diverse stream geomorphology and anthropogenic influences have resulted in a high degree of variation in stream condition across the watersheds of the region. This large environmental gradient allows for exploration of the ecology of resident fish species in relation to abiotic variability. The objective of this study is to quantify the diversity, distribution, and habitat selection of resident fishes at a fine spatial scale. This assessment has been carried out on seven Green Bay tributaries and two Lake Michigan tributaries of varying stream condition. Fish and habitat surveys were conducted over a one-kilometer reach, which was further divided into 20-meter sub-reaches using block nets. Results suggest that the fish community is a unique function of each tributary. Species diversity is reflective of instream habitat characteristics. Individual species distributions were also found to be associated with varying habitat features. The detailed nature of this study will serve to inform restorative management actions, maximizing benefit to individual streams and fish species. Understudied non-game fishes may especially profit from this habitat association knowledge by allowing restoration projects to account for their species-specific requirements. Due to the vast amount of variation found in the Green Bay sub-watershed, these species to habitat relationships may be applicable to tributaries across the Great Lakes region.
