Book excerpt: Increased market competition is likely to negatively influence market performance of triple-play providers, while platform competition contributes to improve data service performance in the cable and telephone industry. In addition, cable and telephone companies show superior performance in their core services compared to their other two services, which support the resource-based view of strategy. For the impact of triple-play on market entry, the result of the regression indicates that the triple-play bundle influences market entry positively but at decreasing rates in the high-speed fixed broadband market. This implies that the triple-play bundle enables firms to have a competitive advantage over single service providers, which may result in deterring entry to some degree. Local loop unbundling regulation has an impact on market entry jointly with the impact of triple-play.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1971 competition has begun to replace regulation as a governing force in the telecommunications industry. The breakup of the national telephone monopolies, technological advances, and the worldwide network in telecommunications have brought a revolution in the telecommunications equipment and services industries. These changes have forced legislators and regulators to rethink public policy toward communications. The papers in this book were first presented at a conference organized by Robert Crandall and Kenneth Flamm, pulling together a group of industry professionals and scholars to address the far-reaching implications of the upheaval in the communications industry. The contributors analyze the effects of this increasing competition on standardization, technical innovation, and international rivalry. Changing the Rules offers possible policy options and analyzes their potential effects on the future market structure and the competitive positions of the U.S. computer and communications industries.

Book excerpt: Markets which have been previously out-of-reach for companies other than monopolies or other protected firms, are increasingly being opened up to new entrants. Greater competitive pressure implies that more sophisticated business strategies must be formulated by all companies cooperating in emerging markets. This book focuses on strategy in emerging telecommunications markets in a liberalized Europe, particularly in the UK and Sweden. The book provides: * a literature review and applications of strategy concepts and key correlations * applications of a market establishment model and the strategic states model * a description of competition amongst telecom operators in the UK and Sweden * detailed case-studies of strategies of telecom operators in Europe * the identification of patterns and processes valid for emerging markets in general. Whilst the industry focus in the book is telecommunications, the framework and the models explored and developed provide guides to strategy formulation irrespective of the market under consideration. Strategy in Emerging Markets will make valuable reading for strategy researchers, students and for corporate strategists. It will be of particular interest to those wishing to plot recent developments in the telecommunications industry.

A basic introductory strategy text that integrates economic analysis with management strategy, it takes into account global competition and high-tech (Internet) developments, and recognizes that companies today can no longer expect to sustain competitive advantage but must rely on innovation (of products, processes, and transactions). Although many of the principles are illustrated with numerical examples, the text does not require a background course in economics or mathematics, and does not contain technical graphs or equations. Thus, the book is suitable for undergraduate managerial economics and strategy courses, as well as for introductory MBA courses in business strategy and as a companion to case studies.
