Book excerpt: The marine areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ) comprise 40 percent of the earth’s surface, covering 64 percent of the surface of the ocean and 95 percent of its volume. The Common Oceans ABNJ Programme (2014-2019) was implemented by FAO as a concerted effort to bring stakeholders to work together to manage and conserve the world’s common oceans. The ABNJ Tuna project, one component of the Common Oceans ABNJ Programme, promoted important transformational changes in the management practices of tuna fisheries, improving their sustainability, strengthening Marine Stewardship Council capabilities of tuna regional fisheries management organizations (t-RFMOs) and their members, and significantly reducing their impact on biodiversity. The project generated knowledge but lacked a structured mechanism and strategy to harvest and disseminate it. Similarly to the programme level evaluation report, the programmatic approach component, the partnership framework, as well as how to foster synergies among projects and capitalization of knowledge management should be strengthened.

Book excerpt: The marine areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ) comprises 40 percent of the earth’s surface, it covers 64 percent of the surface of the ocean and 95 percent of its volume. The Common Oceans ABNJ Program (2014-2019) was implemented by FAO as a concerted effort to bring various stakeholders to work together to manage and conserve the world’s common oceans. The ABNJ Deep-Sea project, one component of the Common Oceans ABNJ Program, was of great assistance to newly-formed regional fisheries management organization and arrangements (RFMO/As), as well as some long-standing regional fisheries. The project showed positive results in safeguarding vulnerable marine ecosystems, strengthening monitoring, control and surveillance to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, mitigating bycatch mortality trends, and building awareness of cross-sectoral aspects in effective governance of ABNJ. Through its cooperation with RFMOs, the project has, to some extent, contributed to minimize the negative impacts of bycatch. Results achieved should be capitalized on and upscaled in a second phase.

This book was released on 2021-07-22 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Half of the Moldovan population lives in rural areas. However, the rural employment rate is only 39 percent. Income from agricultural activities is low compared to other sectors of the economy. This evaluation seeks to contribute to organization-wide learning by drawing lessons and making recommendations that will be useful for FAO’s future engagement in Moldova. FAO provided highly specialized technical expertise to formulate strategies, policies and frameworks, and offer innovative approaches and solutions. Likewise, the evaluation found evidence of results leading to livelihood improvements, empowerment, and adoption of more sustainable practices and technologies. Nevertheless, FAO should further strive to support the transformation to more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems for better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life, leaving no one behind. In doing so, FAO should use the knowledge generated to refine programmes in consultation with key partners towards effective and sustainable results.

This book was released on 2021-11-03 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The project “Implementing the socio-ecosystem approach to conserve and sustainable use biodiversity in the Caribbean Region of Colombia” was financed by the GEF, implemented, and executed by FAO. The results of the evaluation highlight the relevance of the project to reduce the degradation and fragmentation of the strategic ecosystems of the Caribbean Colombian area, increase and improve the provision of goods and services from agricultural and forestry production. It was also found a high effectiveness of the project in obtaining the expected results, exceeding in some cases, the established goals. Likewise, the processes and mechanisms implemented by the project for the involvement of relevant stakeholders generated a very high ownership of the project. Due to the successes achieved, the evaluation identified good practices and lessons learned that may be useful for the design of similar projects. Among the main areas for improvement that were identified, is to improve the design of goals related to the impact on policy instruments and the determination of co-financing by the project partners; the institutionalization of the Regional Strategy of Socioecosystemic Connectivities to ensure its replicability and the revision of the tool for monitoring the effectiveness in the management of the GEF.

The Common Oceans ABNJ Program (2014-2019) was implemented by FAO as a concerted effort to bring various stakeholders to work together to manage and conserve the world’s common oceans. The Program catalysed important transformational changes and practices in governance, and operational aspects of fisheries and their impact on biodiversity. There is encouraging evidence that these are being mainstreamed by key institutional actors and early trends of positive impact point to improvement in fish stocks health and in bycatch mitigation, starting by the quality and quantity of the information available. However, the Program lacked a proper programmatic approach and missed opportunities to foster synergies among projects and capitalize on knowledge management.

This book describes the elements needed in planning and implementing a "Smart Grid" by outlining how the electricity delivery system can be modernized so it monitors, protects, and automatically optimizes the operation of its interconnected elements—from the central and distributed generator through the high-voltage network and distribution system, to energy storage installations and to end-use consumers and their thermostats, electric vehicles, appliances, and other household devices. This comprehensive guide highlights emerging concepts of cyber and physical security, resiliency, and the newest architecture—"The Integrated Grid." You’ll gain an understanding of how a two-way flow of electricity and information can be used to create an automated, widely distributed energy delivery network.
