Book excerpt: Book 3 of the Road Trip Revival Series, Rocky Paths, follows Jean as she continues to make her way across the country. Even though Louie the cat seems to be in love with anyone and everyone who isn’t Jean, he still insists on traveling with the human. Jean wonders if the cat wasn’t sent by the Lord to test her patience, but she can’t deny that Louie was able to open doors that might otherwise remain shut. That certainly holds true when Jean encounters a young child who stares at the world through distrustful eyes and cowers at the slightest wrong word. Louie makes himself right at home in the heart of the little boy, though, and soon the child is firmly planted in Jean’s heart as well. The Lord continues to prove that He moves in very mysterious ways indeed, and Jean finds herself shocked at some of those ways. Following Jesus is certainly an adventure! If you like stories about slightly sarcastic "well-seasoned" ladies, then Road Trip Revival series is for you! Biblically truthful and Christian-based, the series is safe for the entire family.

Book excerpt: In Many Paths, Eugene Hillman, a pioneer in the area of interreligious dialogue and Catholic thought, argues that the wider ecumenism to which Christians were summoned by Vatican II may prove to be the most radically demanding of the Council's many calls. It requires a reexamination of christology, of ecclesiology, of missiology, and a coming-to-terms with the reality of religious pluralism. By exploring religion's historico-cultural dimensions, examining the Church's tradition and practice vis-^-vis other cultures and religions, and explicating the challenges of a post-Vatican II ministry, Many Paths makes a vital contribution to the development of interreligious dialogue.

Book excerpt: The problems of a troubled world economy and the essentially political issues of how it should be managed make up the stuff of international political economy. The overwhelming importance of these questions has drawn ever increasing numbers of students and teachers in universities, colleges and schools to study the subject. There are many paths into international political economy for them to follow and this volume, originally published in 1984, discusses most of them. The collection as a whole demonstrates that the field should be seen as the exclusive preserve of neither the economists nor the political scientists. On the contrary, there is much to learn from specialists - and practical people in government and business - with a variety of backgrounds. A rich selection is therefore offered, including history, population studies, money, trade, technology and law, from which the reader can pick and choose at will. The contributions point to the landmarks of the subject and provide useful tips on the best books to read and the most interesting ideas to look out for.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transformation of the American South--from authoritarian to democratic rule--is the most important political development since World War II. It has re-sorted voters into parties, remapped presidential elections, and helped polarize Congress. Most important, it is the final step in America's democratization. Paths Out of Dixie illuminates this sea change by analyzing the democratization experiences of Georgia, Mississippi, and South Carolina. Robert Mickey argues that Southern states, from the 1890s until the early 1970s, constituted pockets of authoritarian rule trapped within and sustained by a federal democracy. These enclaves--devoted to cheap agricultural labor and white supremacy--were established by conservative Democrats to protect their careers and clients. From the abolition of the whites-only Democratic primary in 1944 until the national party reforms of the early 1970s, enclaves were battered and destroyed by a series of democratization pressures from inside and outside their borders. Drawing on archival research, Mickey traces how Deep South rulers--dissimilar in their internal conflict and political institutions--varied in their responses to these challenges. Ultimately, enclaves differed in their degree of violence, incorporation of African Americans, and reconciliation of Democrats with the national party. These diverse paths generated political and economic legacies that continue to reverberate today. Focusing on enclave rulers, their governance challenges, and the monumental achievements of their adversaries, Paths Out of Dixie shows how the struggles of the recent past have reshaped the South and, in so doing, America's political development.

Book excerpt: Step right up, folks, and prepare to have your blood run cold as you meet the strangest, most bizarre trio of misfits ever spawned by a carnival of blood: TWEEDLEDEE, an adult man trapped in the body of a three-year-old toddler, whose mask of childlike innocence hides a seething brain plotting hideous revenge against all that is sane and normal! HERCULES, the circus strongman, brutal, bestial, revelling in carnage and murder - yet the submissive slave of a deadly dwarf! ECHO, the expert ventriloquist with the uncanny ability to throw his voice so that lifeless wooden dummies seem to speak even as you or I! Together, they are THE UNHOLY THREE, star attractions of Tod Robbins' classic novel of hate, murder and madness on and off the midway. Best known as author of the story which inspired the still-controversial fear-film FREAKS, Robbins first stunned the public with this intense account of a ruthless war on society waged by a triad of carny castaways.
