Book excerpt: First published in 1987, when it spent four weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list, Intruders remains one of the most powerful and influential books ever written on the controversial subject of alien abduction. Building on the evidence presented in his seminal 1981 work, Missing Time, Budd Hopkins here focuses on the remarkable case of "Kathie Davis," a young woman from rural Indianapolis whose life was changed forever after a shattering, face-to-face encounter one summer night with non-human entities. Little did Kathie know it, but her encounter that night was not by chance; she had not been in the wrong place at the wrong time. Like so many others before and since, Kathie had been selected by an intelligence that operates beyond the veil of our accepted reality. Its technology challenges our comprehension, its motives are murky. But its interactions with Kathie and others like her have provided consistent clues-even physical evidence-pointing to an agenda relating to evolution and survival ... but of whose species ... theirs, or ours? Such was the popularity of Intruders that it was later adapted for television as a CBS miniseries of the same name, starring Richard Crenna and co-written by Tracy Tormé, (Fire in the Sky, Star Trek: The Next Generation). Intruders is a classic in the literature that remains just as relevant today as ever-and just as terrifying.

Book excerpt: For ex-cop Jack Whalen, it all begins with a visitfrom a childhood friend, a lawyer who needs Jack's help. The family of a noted scientist has been senselessly, brutally murdered, and the scientist is nowhere to be found. But Jack has more pressing concerns. The past that drove him from the L.A.P.D. continues to haunt him. And his wife has disappeared during a routine business trip to Seattle. She never checked into her hotel, she isn't answering her cell phone. She is gone. A third missing person, a little girl in Oregon, is found miles away. But it soon becomes obvious that she is not an innocent victim . . . and far from defenseless. Something very strange is happening—a perplexing series of troubling events that's leading Jack Whalen into the shadows. And the secrets buried there are unlike anything he, or anyone, could possibly have imagined.

Book excerpt: Two groups of unlikely companions have converged on the idyllic Deer Hill home of horror novelist Daniel Westforth Whittier in order to recall the bizarre events they experienced a year before in the summer and fall of 2003, ostensibly to furnish him with the plot for a new book. But Daniel's guests soon reveal that something truly inexplicable and almost unbelievable has shattered the customary tranquility of rural Ross County, Pennsylvania-something that has shaped the history of the county and of Daniel's own family. Their tales return time and again to the enigmatic family known as the Dier who lived on Deer Hill in the 1880s. Several waves of murder and destruction in Ross County linked to the presence of the Dier have fixed them in local folklore, and the memory of the family's violent end still haunts the darkened woods and ruined Victorian homes that dot the countryside. The men and women who became entangled in the horrific and wondrous saga of the Dier must face the repercussions of their encounters with extraordinary forces. For some, the experience confirmed persistent whispers of lingering evil; for others, it was an unforeseen journey into a realm of terror and sublime beauty. Who-or what-were the Dier, and what was their ultimate fate? The answers to these questions will challenge each participant's convictions, and may hold dire consequences for their futures and that of Ross County itself.

Two men and two women, who were forced to leave their homeland, escape into a protective canyon to fin a home of their own. During their flight, they become inseparable allies; each couple with a love story of its own. On the fist leg of their emigration, they are forced to cope with a different group of beings that are fugitive as well. These news and separate people emerge as enemies, but as a whirlwind of events unroll, they meld into lasting friends. In an effort to evolve in a better climate, this motley band forges its way over a mountainous divide in search of a place to live, only to find that they have unwittingly ventured into an area claimed by powerful and vindictive inhabitants. The result is a war that pits a primitive force with overwhelming numbers against the allied group who have managed to invent some sophisticated weaponry. Lastly, as the hostilities end, the survivors that remain form new and surprising liaisons that enhance their lives.

Book excerpt: The remarkable shape of this island at once attracts the attention: and indeed it is in its irregular outline and in the occurrence over a large portion of its surface of submarine tuffs and agglomerates that will be found a key to the study of its history. With an extreme length of 98 miles, an average breadth of 15 to 20 miles, and a maximum elevation of nearly 3,500 feet, it has an area, estimated at 2,400 square miles, comparable with that of the county of Devon. Whilst its peculiarly long and narrow dimensions are to be associated with the narrowing of the submarine basaltic platform, from which it rises together with the other large island of Viti Levu, its extremely irregular shape is closely connected with the composite mode of its origin. We have here exemplified the process of the building up of a continental island in the great area of emergence of the Western Pacific, that region which displays at various heights above the sea the ancient reefs and the underlying deposits of the Solomon Islands, New Hebrides, Fiji, Tonga, &c. But this process of construction has never been completed, and is at present suspended; yet it is in its incomplete condition that Vanua Levu possesses its importance for the investigation of this subject. This island has in fact been formed by the union of a number of smaller volcanic islands during a long protracted period of emergence. These original islands are indicated approximately by the 1,800-feet contour-level in the accompanying map. There is, however, no reason for supposing that the movement of emergence has altogether ceased. In the course of ages the extensive submarine plateau, from which it rises, will be laid bare; and the small surrounding islands that are situated upon it, such as Yanganga, Kia, Mali, Rambi, Kioa, &c., will be included in the area of Vanua Levu.

When Jack Kelly, a captain in the Australian army, shows compassion towards his prisoner Paul Mann, a brave and high-ranking German officer, an unexpected bond is formed. But neither could imagine how their pasts and futures would become inextricably linked by one place: Papua. The Great War is finally over and both soldiers return to their once familiar lives, only to find that in their absences events have changed their respective worlds forever. In Australia, Jack is suddenly alone with a son he does not know and a future filled with uncertainty, while the photograph of a beautiful German woman he has never met fills his thoughts. Meanwhile the Germany that Paul had fought for is vanishing under the influence of an ambitious young man named Adolph Hitler, and he fears for the future of his family. A new beginning beckons them both in a beautiful but dangerous land where rivers of gold are as legendary as the fearless, cannibalistic tribes, and where fortunes can be made and lost as quickly as a life. Papua.
