Book Synopsis Driving the Road of Life with a Flat Tire by : Gary Yordon
Download or read book Driving the Road of Life with a Flat Tire written by Gary Yordon and published by Inkshares. This book was released on 2016-11-29 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to the world of Gary Yordon—former politician, part-time television host, and accidental newspaper columnist. When Yordon's world began giving him stories too good not to immortalize, he sent one to a friend at a newspaper. Two years and seventy-five columns later, he had a rabidly loyal readership. Their persistent requests led to this collection. There is nothing above Yordon's satire, including his lack of home repair skills, addiction to Steven Seagal movies, and kidney stone intolerance. (Okay, maybe Yordon is normal in that regard.) He admits to actively resisting the temptation to write excessively about his mother, who is "a living, breathing, Neil Simon play." "My ninety-year-old mother is a fierce shopper. Put a parachute on sale and Mom's all over it because it's not about need, it's about price. She'd buy a show pony to get a free harness. She passed the shopping gene to me. If I hear the phrase 'as seen on TV,' I know I'm in trouble. At 3 a.m., the Leopard Print Cat Tunnel for $19.95 is too good to pass up. Now all I need is a cat." Tender moments are tucked away in this book too, especially those related to Yordon's relationship with his profoundly challenged son, Zachary. Learn more about Gary Yordon at ZPRgroup.com.

Book Synopsis The Lost Children of Wilder by : Nina Bernstein
Download or read book The Lost Children of Wilder written by Nina Bernstein and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-03-23 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1973 Marcia Lowry, a young civil liberties attorney, filed a controversial class-action suit that would come to be known as Wilder, which challenged New York City’s operation of its foster-care system. Lowry’s contention was that the system failed the children it was meant to help because it placed them according to creed and convenience, not according to need. The plaintiff was thirteen-year-old Shirley Wilder, an abused runaway whose childhood had been shaped by the system’s inequities. Within a year Shirley would give birth to a son and relinquish him to the same failing system. Seventeen years later, with Wilder still controversial and still in court, Nina Bernstein tried to find out what had happened to Shirley and her baby. She was told by child-welfare officials that Shirley had disappeared and that her son was one of thousands of anonymous children whose circumstances are concealed by the veil of confidentiality that hides foster care from public scrutiny. But Bernstein persevered. The Lost Children of Wilder gives us, in galvanizing and compulsively readable detail, the full history of a case that reveals the racial, religious, and political fault lines in our child-welfare system, and lays bare the fundamental contradiction at the heart of our well-intended efforts to sever the destiny of needy children from the fate of their parents. Bernstein takes us behind the scenes of far-reaching legal and legislative battles, at the same time as she traces, in heartbreaking counterpoint, the consequences as they are played out in the life of Shirley’s son, Lamont. His terrifying journey through the system has produced a man with deep emotional wounds, a stifled yearning for family, and a son growing up in the system’s shadow. In recounting the failure of the promise of benevolence, The Lost Children of Wilder makes clear how welfare reform can also damage its intended beneficiaries. A landmark achievement of investigative reporting and a tour de force of social observation, this book will haunt every reader who cares about the needs of children.

Book Synopsis Lewis Creek Lost and Found by : Kevin T. Dann
Download or read book Lewis Creek Lost and Found written by Kevin T. Dann and published by UPNE. This book was released on 2001 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Well known for his imaginative treatment of environmental issues, Kevin Dann presents a natural history of the Lewis Creek watershed in Vermont's Champlain Valley, told largely through the lives and thought of three individuals, whose investigations brought them into close contact with the area. Congregationalist minister John Perry (1825 - 1872) conducted paleontological research on the region's Paleozoic rock and attempted to negotiate his era's confrontation between science and religion. Rowland Robinson (1833 - 1900) was a Quaker farmer and author/artist whose historical fiction often dealt with issues of human impact on this watershed. The first plant-hunting expeditions of another Quaker farmer and noted plant collector, Cyrus Pringle (1838 - 1911), took place in this watershed as well. Dann's account of these three men, whose lives span nearly a century, graphically illustrates contemporary human-nature relationships at the same time that it suggests the limits of science in circumscribing our experience of the physical landscape. The experience of pain and loss is documented along with the stories of success and celebration, since, as Dann writes, "Genuine places, like human hearts, have dark recesses within them, and by examining these recesses within the Lewis Creek watershed, we take a small step toward demythologizing Vermont."
