Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the 139th Field Artillery, American Expeditionary Forces In January, 1917, Governor Goodrich appointed Colonel Harry B. Smith of Indianapolis to be Adjutant General of the State of Indiana. Perhaps no officer ever came to this office better equipped temperamentally, professionally and by experience to cope with the important work and problems that this office had to handle and solve in the nation's participation in the war which then appeared inevitable. For seventeen years I had served under the command of Colonel Smith in the 2d Infantry, I. N. G., including that regiment's service in the Spanish American war, and had every opportunity to become acquainted with his capacity and excellent ability. It has been my endeavor in the administration of this regiment to carry out the lessons learned from such able officers as my former regimental commanders, the late Colonel James R. Ross, Colonels Harry B. Smith and Henri T. Conde and General Will J. McKee, all to whom I shall always owe a great debt. I count it as one of the greatest opportunities of my life to have been able to serve as a young man under these sterling soldiers. Book excerpt: This volume gathers in compact form the official historical records of field artillery units in the United States Army in order to perpetuate and publicize their traditions, honors, and heraldic entitlements. It includes the lineages and honors of Regular Army and Army Reserve field artillery commands, brigades, and groups, and corps and division artillery that have been active since 1965. It also includes the fifty-eight elements of each regiment that have been active since the inception of the Combat Arms Regimental System in 1957. This two-part second edition updates the lineages, honors, and heraldic items of the Regular Army's field artillery regiments and further expands them to include organizations above the regimental level, as well as Army National Guard units. All are current through September 1, 2003. This is the companion book of The Organizational History of Field Artillery, 1775-2003.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April 1917, the United States ended its nonintervention policy and entered World War I as an "Associated Power" to aid the Allies in their fight against the Central Powers. The American Expeditionary Force, fighting alongside French and British troops, provided vital manpower on the Western Front during the Aisne Offensive and participated in major actions in the Saint-Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne offensives that turned the tide late in the war. This volume offers the first comprehensive statistical history of the American Expeditionary Force, supplying fascinating details often omitted from narrative battle summaries. After an overview of each of the actions and battles in which the AEF participated, the book chronicles the day-to-day activities of every division. This work presents the most thorough examination yet available of the American fighting forces in the Great War.

Book excerpt: This multilayered history of World War I's doughboys captures the experiences of American soldiers as they trained for war, voyaged to France, and faced the harsh reality of combat on the Western Front in 1917-18. Hallas uses the words of the troops themselves to describe the first days in the muddy trenches, the bloody battles for Belleau Wood, the violent clash on the Marne, the seemingly unending morass of the Argonne, and more, revealing what the doughboys saw, what they did, how they felt, and how the Great War affected them.
