Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Hildebrand, St. Gregory VII The first ten centuries of the Christian era had closed in a period of indescribable chaos when the stormy dawn of the eleventh century rose upon a disorganised world. Those ten centuries had, indeed, seen great things accomplished. The first great Roman Empire had fallen before the strokes of Goth and Hun and Vandal, and had risen again, like the phoenix from its ashes, in the Empire of Charles the Great. That, too, had vanished, and its shadowy sceptre was claimed by German sovereigns, who held little of the substance of a realm that had once stretched from the Atlantic to the Adriatics The old heathen world had passed away in a storm of persecution directed against the Faith of the Fisherman; and the Church, strong in her days of suffering, had, on her human side, expended her strength and nerve in a struggle for worldly power. The fall of the Empire of Charlemagne about the end of the ninth century had left Italy divided into a number of independent states, over some of which the Pope claimed control. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Times of Hildebrand: Pope Gregory VII With Henry III the Empire attained its maximum of power, its maximum of influence upon the Roman See. In Rome no German sovereign had ever been so absolute. He became hereditary Patrician, and wore constantly the circlet of gold and the green mantle which were the badges of that office, seeming, as one might think, to find in it some further authority than that which the Imperial name conferred. To Henry was granted the nomination of the Pope, and by his instrumentality German after German succeeded to the Papacy, at the bidding of a ruler so powerful, so severe, and so pious. A mere chance checked the course of Imperial patronage. The great Emperor died suddenly in 1056, leaving as his successor his son, a mere child, the unfortunate Henry IV. Under the line of German popes the Papacy learned to borrow the strength of the Imperial system under which it had grown to power. So strengthened, the Papacy aimed at independence. A critical step was taken by entrusting the Papal election 'to the cardinal-bishops, priests and deacons, which aimed a blow at Imperial interference. Politically, an alliance with the Norman settlers in Southern Italy enabled the popes to count upon a counter-balance to the Imperial power. The Papacy slowly prepared to assert its independence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reign of Pope Gregory VII (1073-85), who gave his name to an era of Church reform, is critically important in the history of the medieval church and papacy. Thus it is surprising that this is the first comprehensive biography to appear in any language for over fifty years. H. E. J. Cowdrey presents Gregory's life and work in their entirety, tracing his career from early days as a clerk of the Roman Church, through his political negotiations, ecclesiastical governance, and final exile at Salerno. Full account is taken of his turbulent relations with King Henry IV of Germany, from his first deposition and excommunication in 1076, to the absolution at Canossa and the imposition of a second sentence in 1080. Pope Gregory was also a contemporary of William the Conqueror, and, as the author shows, fully supported his conquest of England. Gregory VII is presented as an individual whose deep inner belief in iustitia (righteousness) did not waver in the face of new circumstances, although his broad outlook underwent changes. Deeply committed to the traditions of the past and especially to those of Pope Gregory the Great, his reign prepared the way for an age of strong papal monarchy in the western Church.
