There are no sources of exact information about many of the facts of his career. It is not known with certainty when he was born or where, or how his boyhood and youth were spent; or whether he was learned in the books or attained his success through a knowledge of nature at first hand. His death went almost unnoticed, and his burial place is unknown. At best, his biography is a recounting of the proba bilities, the story of what the biographer believes he did. Columbus was a mystic. A great vision came to him and became the controlling influence of his life. Faith in the V1s1on gave him courage to face hunger and pain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life Christopher Columbus A series of volumes, upon the Pioneers and Patriots of America, would certainly be defective if they did not contain an account of the adventures of Christopher Columbus, the most illustrious of all the pioneers of the New World. Columbus had his enemies. He has been vehemently assailed. The writer has endeavored to give a perfectly correct account of his character and career, and has been careful to present to the reader his authority for every important statement. Many may think that the assaults upon his character do not deserve so. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Columbus It is a poor service to relate as history an interesting story that is not true, or to lift an historical figure into a heroism far from his real character. To give the facts as we know them, and to Show Columbus as he really was, has been the Sincere endeavor of the writer of this book. The story is wonderful enough without the embellishment of fiction the man is interesting enough when painted in his real colors. In this series the place of honor, or rather of position, is given to Columbus the Admiral, because had it not been for him and for his pluck and faith and perseverance there might have been no young Americans, such as we know to-day, to read or care about the world's great men. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Life of Christopher Columbus This volume was at first written without the aid of Washington Irving's work. The old narratives, including that by the son of Columbus, and his own letters, supplied the body of the biography, which I once intended to swell to dimensions far more voluminous. The American writer enabled me, with little labour, to fill in such minute details as could be introduced into a narrative so slight, and it is as much from feeling as from duty, that I congratulate Washington Irving on his work, and America on the historian of her discovery. The graceful style, and the warm spirit of his writings, have made him a familiar friend with the English reader; and, in producing this little biography of Christopher Columbus, I trust I shall be considered rather as seeking to follow in his track than as attempting to rival even the most compressed version of his narrative. In the "Life and Voyages" of Columbus, we have one monument of his fame, engraved elaborately with a picture of all his varied fortunes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Christopher Columbus The city of Genoa was still a mighty power in the Mediterranean when the great discoverer, Christopher Columbus, was born, towards the middle of the fifteenth century. Its highest state of prosperity passed away with the fall of Constantinople, when its factories in the Crimea, at Pera, and in the Levant were lost or weakened. But the Republic, though forced to seek protection alternately from France and Milan, continued to be powerful by reason of the enterprise and maritime skill of her sailors, the ability of her merchants, and the credit of her bank of St. George. Less formidable and less independent than in the previous two centuries, the beautiful city was still the chief centre of Mediter ranean trade, and was never more full of intellectual activity. But since 1421 the Republic had been under the protection of the Duke of Milan. The Genoese were thus drawn into the contest for the succession of Naples. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Character and Achievements of the So-Called Christopher Columbus IN giving the present work to the public, in sending it forth a single champion against a host of opponents, many of whom are the flower of literary chivalry, the author is aware that its reception will not be altogether a friendly one; he has, however, devoted several years of thought and study to the subject which is now imperfectly treated, and the deeper he has dived into the secrets of unpublished or forgotten history, the more firm have become his convictions that some proclamation of the truth should be made, some protest entered against the further propagation of a falsehood under the name of history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Columbus: The Discoverer of America This Life of Columbus is one of a series of biographies prepared under my superintendence, and for the most part taken verbatim from my "History of the Spanish Conquest in America." That work was written chiefly with a view to illustrate the history of slavery, and not to give full accounts of the deeds of the discoverers and conquerors of the New World, much less to give a condensed memoir of each of them. It has, therefore, been necessary to re-arrange and add considerably to these materials, and for this assistance I am indebted to the skill and research of Mr. Herbert Preston Thomas.
