Karly Lane, bestselling Australian author Will a misunderstanding and past trauma stand in the way of profound attraction? Immovable determination meets irresistible charm in this delightful rural romance from an award-winning and much-loved author - for readers of Rachael Johns, Karly Lane and Fleur McDonald. When Phoebe Cartwright finds Sinn Tørrissen, a naval officer and meteorologist, frozen half to death in the middle of a thunderstorm, she believes she's saved his life. Sinn, unfailingly competent and infuriatingly arrogant, disagrees. In Phoebe's small country town to track down the members of an illegal horse-racing syndicate, the last thing he needs is to become entangled with Phoebe. A much-loved member of her community, the prickly and independent Phoebe is used to solving other people's problems. So when she learns her younger sister could be implicated in their father's dishonest accounting for the syndicate, she insists on working with Sinn to uncover the truth. Sinn is both confused and entranced by the passionate Phoebe and in spite of her resistance, Phoebe finds herself drawn to him. But Phoebe is determined to protect her sister above all, and the secrets she cannot tell Sinn threaten to sweep his investigation - and their romance - way off course. With clouds building on the horizon, can Phoebe and Sinn weather the gale and find in each other a shelter from the storm? 'Encapsulates everything I love about the romance genre and so much more. A go-to author for rural romance for the head as well as the heart,' Joanna Nell, Bestselling Australian Author

Book excerpt: The future of all mankind and the planet he inhabits seems to be on a collision course for disaster. Nuclear proliferation and hostility between nations foster consistent rumors of impending doom among prognosticators, politicians, and preachers. What will the world be like a generation from now? Will there be peace on earth? Will there be more tension and more predictions of gloom and doom? Some have even suggested there will only be the eerie silence of a post-apocalyptic world. Can we know what the future holds? In a much-debated book of the Bible there seem to be some answers to the questions about earth's final days. The Book of Revelation, for Christians and non-Christians alike, has been more thoroughly scrutinized than any other New Testament writing. However, a close inspection of this book reveals insight into the future that can found in no other writing. This is no attempt to predict the future. It is an attempt to describe future events, whenever they occur, in more detail than is possible without a close inspection of Revelation chapters 4 through 16. In "Stormclouds on the Horizon: A Comprehensive View of Earth's Last Days", special attention is given to a future period commonly referred to as the Tribulation. The ancient prophet John the Beloved is privileged to see these future days revealed before his eyes. Unlike other books on this subject, Stormclouds reveals two viewpoints on this seven-year period given to John in this one prophetic vision.

From the first American Football League's attempt to settle the league title on the gridiron in 1926 to the separate NFL and AFL championships of the 1965 season, this history offers a narrative of each game, including line-ups, box scores and team statistics.

Abandoned by his mother at birth, Jack was brought up by foster parents. When working in a large country house, he comes across a sports trophy engraved with a name that re-ignites a deep-held desire to try to find his birth family, something he failed to achieve in an earlier attempt. Using a different approach this time, he makes contact with a half-brother. Unknown to Jack, his relative has a shady past involving convictions for minor crimes, which inadvertently draw in Jack. The connection with his half sibling leads to a complicated series of events involving a corrupt Member of Parliament and his equally corrupt nephew. The police use Jack to further their investigations into the MP and his nephew. It turns out that both men’s crimes are far more serious than originally thought. Russian spies are only part of his troubles as Jack becomes involved in a complicated series of events that threaten his life.

Book excerpt: The Omega War ended, not with a bang, but with a whimper. The Peacemaker-enforced ceasefire brought an end to the hostilities, but not a resolution, and now it's up to the Four Horsemen to forge a lasting peace. Alexis Cromwell, despite her pregnancy, heads off to Capital with Nigel Shirazi to obtain justice from the enigmatic Mercenary Guild Council, but when they arrive, they're quickly embroiled in galactic politics, and find out the situation is far, far worse than they could possibly have imagined. On Earth, Jim Cartwright has been given the task of 'fixing' the world government, which was complicit in General Peepo and the Merc Guild's invasion. He has some good ideas, but so do Peepo's agents who have stayed behind to foment rebellion. Sansar Enkh has her formidable intelligence service to watch his back?but will it be enough?Additionally, a new force is emerging on Earth, and it is raising far more questions than it is answering. What is the enigmatic Section 51, and what are their ultimate goals? As the Horsemen work for peace, the clouds of war are on the horizon. A greater war is looming as the other guilds, sensing weakness in the Mercenary Guild, begin their fight for supremacy. Who will be left when the storm clouds clear?

Book excerpt: Literature and philosophy have long shared an interest in questions of truth, value, and form. And yet, from ancient times to the present, they have often sharply diverged, both in their approach to these questions and in their relationship to one another. Moreover, the vast differences among individual writers, historical periods, and languages pose challenges for anyone wishing to understand the relationship between them. This Introduction provides a synthetic and original guide to this vast terrain. It uncovers the deep interests that literature and philosophy share while offering a lucid account of their differences. It sheds new light on many standing debates and offers students and scholars of literary criticism, literary theory, and philosophy a chance to think freshly about questions that have preoccupied the Western tradition from its very beginnings up until the present.

Book excerpt: Storm clouds are gathering, silently and slowly, too far away to worry about. Or so it seems. But ignoring what is brewing will have dire consequences for the people caught up in the maelstrom. Shirley Burton is too busy cheating on her husband, having a laugh and looking for fun to alleviate the boredom of her childless marriage. Kathleen Mitchell is too wrapped up in running around after her beautiful family to worry about her health. Anne Simpson has two things on her mind: her forthcoming marriage to Paul Betham, who seems to want to control her, and her career, which she does not want to give up. Can Shirley really expect to deceive her husband and get away with it? Can Kathleen hold it all together, and is Anne able to have the best of everything? Storm Clouds Gathering is a story of human emotion, passion and heart-rending grief. Set against the backdrop of the mid-sixties, these three families will be tested to the limit as betrayal, loss and love threaten to change their lives forever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The compelling and adventurous stories of seven pioneering scientists who were at the forefront of what we now call climate science. From the glaciers of the Alps to the towering cumulonimbus clouds of the Caribbean and the unexpectedly chaotic flows of the North Atlantic, Waters of the World is a tour through 150 years of the history of a significant but underappreciated idea: that the Earth has a global climate system made up of interconnected parts, constantly changing on all scales of both time and space. A prerequisite for the discovery of global warming and climate change, this idea was forged by scientists studying water in its myriad forms. This is their story. Linking the history of the planet with the lives of those who studied it, Sarah Dry follows the remarkable scientists who summited volcanic peaks to peer through an atmosphere’s worth of water vapor, cored mile-thick ice sheets to uncover the Earth’s ancient climate history, and flew inside storm clouds to understand how small changes in energy can produce both massive storms and the general circulation of the Earth’s atmosphere. Each toiled on his or her own corner of the planetary puzzle. Gradually, their cumulative discoveries coalesced into a unified working theory of our planet’s climate. We now call this field climate science, and in recent years it has provoked great passions, anxieties, and warnings. But no less than the object of its study, the science of water and climate is—and always has been—evolving. By revealing the complexity of this history, Waters of the World delivers a better understanding of our planet’s climate at a time when we need it the most.

Book excerpt: From the octagon tower, a story unfolds about a group of surfers gathering for adventure, friendship, and adrenaline. Bear, LP, Mason, Brownie, George and their friends, a testosterone-amped community of surfers and bikers, live on the dangerous side of the law, both by choice and by necessity. But what happens the next day has nothing to do with surfing. A chance discovery is about to change their lives... and end a few of them. At the Bora Ring, an ancient Aboriginal ceremonial site in Outback Queensland, a Scroll awaits to be found. In the discovery, each man faces his own curiosity. Has the Dreamtime seeped into the world? Can they trust Tibrogargan, Brownie’s folklore ancestor? What messages are the women trying to share, and are the women real? That night, the men find more questions than answers. Their quest for understanding takes them on a journey spanning over forty years and venturing around the world. Mysticism, spiritualism, drugs, love, and violence are but distractions to save and deliver the Scroll. In the year 2010, the Scroll will give up one of its many secrets, and when one of the men realises a quatrain from Nostradamus foretold his participation in the journey, they’ll learn that their adventure is far from over.

Book excerpt: Texas in 1860 was home for some 600,000 hardy, adventuresome souls; not counting, of course, the first Americans who had called it home since long before anyone could remember. That number was up from the 130,000 estimated population in 1845, when Henry Briden first came to the New World. And they kept coming...and coming...and coming...from Europe...from Mexico...from the eastern states...from the southern states...from all over...pushing the frontier farther and farther west...looking for freedom...looking for opportunity...looking for a fresh start. And driving the natives deeper...and deeper...and deeper into what looked like extinction. But what about the other side of the coin-the battle between "free" states and "slave" states? Could Henry remain neutral? He didn't own any slaves and didn't believe a person should own slaves, so could he just remain neutral? He had no reason to get involved, or did he? Storm clouds were gathering, and it didn't look pleasant. The first book in a new trilogy about the Civil War years in the Southwest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguing that the fundamental, familiar, sexual violence of slavery and racialized subjugation have continued to shape black and white subjectivities into the present, Christina Sharpe interprets African diasporic and Black Atlantic visual and literary texts that address those “monstrous intimacies” and their repetition as constitutive of post-slavery subjectivity. Her illuminating readings juxtapose Frederick Douglass’s narrative of witnessing the brutal beating of his Aunt Hester with Essie Mae Washington-Williams’s declaration of freedom in Dear Senator: A Memoir by the Daughter of Strom Thurmond, as well as the “generational genital fantasies” depicted in Gayl Jones’s novel Corregidora with a firsthand account of such “monstrous intimacies” in the journals of an antebellum South Carolina senator, slaveholder, and vocal critic of miscegenation. Sharpe explores the South African–born writer Bessie Head’s novel Maru—about race, power, and liberation in Botswana—in light of the history of the KhoiSan woman Saartje Baartman, who was displayed in Europe as the “Hottentot Venus” in the nineteenth century. Reading Isaac Julien’s film The Attendant, Sharpe takes up issues of representation, slavery, and the sadomasochism of everyday black life. Her powerful meditation on intimacy, subjection, and subjectivity culminates in an analysis of Kara Walker’s black silhouettes, and the critiques leveled against both the silhouettes and the artist.
