Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preliminary Investigations on Dry, Cold Storage of Southern Pine Seed Early attempts at the Southern Forest Experiment Station to store south ern pine seed made use of a variety of containers, such as sealed glass jars, paper bags, and even sealed wax - paper bags. Some seed lots were disinfected with formaldehyde, other lots were untreated. No record was made of the moisture content of the seed at time of storing, nor was the germination per centage (measure of initial seed quality) always determined for the fresh seed. Temperatures during the storage period were disregarded. A concise, quantita tive summary of experiments during this early period cannot be made, but the nature of the results is readily apparent when the data are grouped loosely by species and by treatment previous to storage. The results were highly erratic and generally unsatisfactory (see table The viability of longleaf seed was usually greatly reduced within a year. For instance, the germination per centage of a longleaf seed lot dropped in 1 year from an initial value of 49 percent to 14 percent when stored, without disinfection, in sealed glass; yet the following season, the germination percentage of a lot under comparable storage conditions with 77 percent initial germination dropped in 1 year to percent. On the other hand, longleaf seed from the 1925 crop, with a ger mination of 75 percent when fresh, when stored in sealed glass after treatment with formaldehyde kept remarkably well for 1 year (germination percent) and moderately well for 2 years more percent and percent germina tion after 2 and 3 years, respectively). Since the longleaf seed were usually dried by air currents from an electric fan after treatment with formaldehyde, it was thought that this thorough drying might have been the factor responsible for the good preservation of these seed lots. This led to measurements of seed moisture content before storage, and in 1935 a cautious surmise was expressed that moisture content was important in the storage of longleaf pine seed. The limited data available also indicated that within a given stand, cone production increased as crown position increased in dominance. The amount Of viable seed stored in the cones varied from per acre in the 40-year un thinned stand to for thinned timber of this age. Intermediate were 70 to 80-year jack pine with and the plantations with per acre. This is a range of to pounds of germ inable seed, an amount which would be muchcones. But since there were more Older cones on the trees, they contributed almost a third of the viable seed. The lower yield Of viable seeds in Older cones was due in part to the fewer total seeds they contained and in part to the presence Of an appreciable number Of dead seeds, for empty seeds were no more numerous here than in young er cones. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Germination of Treated Shortleaf Pine Seed The study was made in greenhouse facilities of the University of Missouri, using 1957 Missouri seed that had been stored in sealed containers at 32 to 36 F. Moisture content of this seed before stratification was about 22 percent. Treatments studied were stratification for 20, 40, and 60 days at 38 to 40 F. Followed by storage for 2, 15, and 30 days at 38 and 60 F. Some seed lots received no coating, others the sticker only, and the rest were treated with both sticker and a mixture of two repellents. All treatment combinations were replicated four times. There were 220 sample lots of 100 seeds each. The polyethylene-plastic-bag method of seed stratification was used in this study. Seed soaked in water at 60 to 70 F. For 24 hours was drained, sealed in plastic bags, and placed in a refriger ator (fig. Repellents and sticker were applied after stratification but before storage. The sticker used was Dow Latex si2r; repellents were Endrin 25w, a rodent repellent that also possesses insecticidal properties, and sublimed anthraquinone, a bird repellent. Two pounds of Endrin 25w (25 percent concentration) and 15 pounds of anthraquinone were applied per 100 pounds of seed. High viability will be maintained if the seed is dried to 8 or 10 percent moisture content, placed in sealed containers, and stored at a temperature between 0°f. And 3z°f. Four prerequisites for successful storage are: (1) collection of fully ripe cones, (2) careful stor age of cones in a well-ventilated building to prevent molding before they go into the kiln, (3) processing of cones within 60 days after collection, and (4) placing the seed in cold storage immediately after processing. The ease of storing loblolly seed makes pos sible substantial savings. Supplies collected in bumper years can be saved for use in lean years. Not only are cones cheapest when they are most abundant, but seed yields are greatest. Thus, in years of heavy cone crops, yields often average 114 pounds of seed per bushel 'of cones, as contrasted to 1/z to 3a]. Pound when cones are relatively scarce. Pour several gallons of water into the drum about every 2 weeks to keep the moss thoroughly wet, but not saturated.
