Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Penetrating biographies written by a group of distinguished travel writers, broadcasters, and historians reveal the lives, motives, and passions of forty major explorers in history. It has always been mankind’s gift, or curse, to be inquisitive, and through the ages people have been driven to explore the limits of the worlds known to them—and beyond. Here are the stories of forty of the world’s greatest explorers from Europe, America, Asia, and Australia. These are men and women who changed our perception of the world through their courageous adventures. Organized thematically, the book opens with the oceanic journeys of five hundred years ago, when the great era of recorded exploration began. The following sections look at The Land, Rivers, Polar Ice, Deserts, Life on Earth, and New Frontiers. Many of these explorers recounted their journeys in vivid firsthand accounts; others were superb artists or photographers. The book features quotes from their journals and reports, and it is illustrated with paintings, photographs, engravings, and maps, so that we can experience their adventures through their own eyes and in their own words. Featured explorers include: Christopher Columbus, Vasco da Gama, James Cook, Lewis and Clark, Richard Burton, Samuel de Champlain, David Livingstone, Roald Amundsen, Gertrude Bell, Alexander von Humboldt, Yuri Gagarin, and Jacques-Yves Cousteau.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneers on Land and Sea: Stories of the Eastern States and of Ocean Explorers This is the first of three volumes of American History Stories for use in intermediate grades. It contains the accounts of the early explorers and frontiersmen along the Atlantic coast and of the voyages of the great ocean pioneers. They deal with great events and persons in the simple setting of pioneer life. The importance of these stories to American children in the intermediate grades is now fully seen. In the simple and interesting form of personal biography they photograph the liveliest scenes of our early history. European teachers may well envy us this copious stream of pioneer story. No European country has anything that can be safely compared with it in richness and value. The myths and early traditions of Europe we are making good use of in our schools, but in entering upon the field of real history, the pioneer and frontier life of America abounds in the striking scenes of simple folklife in its rude beginnings. It is easy for children to lose themselves in this frontier scenery and to partake of its spirit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of writings of early English speaking pioneers and explorers in North America. Articles were taken from old books or internet copies of old books. When possible articles were reproduced from facsimile copies of the original printings. They are presented in chronological order, oldest first. The oldest being originally published in 1588, the newest in 1885.The authors wrote the articles in English. With the exception of Audubon, all were native born English speakers. Of course, there were many pioneers and explorers that didn't write or speak English. However, articles written in other languages are not included, because the book's audience is English speaking and the goal of the book is to provide articles in the words of the authors, not in the words of translators. I have also not included writings that have been extensively edited, corrected, or rewritten. The English of the oldest articles was different from our present English. The older English used shapes for letters that we no longer use. For example Hariot, Bradford and Penn used long s's. These long s's look disconcertingly similar to our present day f's. Here, these have been converted to present day s's. It makes reading much easier. Most old spellings, misspellings, and grammar have been left as they were. Although it is harder to read the older English, reading it will give a better taste of the authors' original thoughts. Also, the reader might enjoy learning to speak and write as was done years ago.
