Book excerpt: Stories from the Diary of a Doctor - a collection of 12 Victorian mystery/detective stories from the Strand Magazine: My First Patient, My Hypnotic Patient, Very Far West, The Heir of Chartelpool, A Death Certificate, The Wrong Prescription, The Horror of Studley Grange (illustrated), Ten Years' Oblivion, An Oak Coffin, Without Witnesses, Trapped, The Ponsonby Diamonds.Elizabeth Thomasina Meade Smith (1854-1914) was a prolific writer of girls' stories as well as a contributor to Victorian periodicals. She was born in Bandon, County Cork, Ireland. She began writing at 17 and produced over 300 books in her lifetime. Her most famous book was A World of Girls, published in 1886. She was also the editor of a popular girls' magazine, Atalanta. With Clifford Halifax, M.D., she wrote 'Stories from the Diary of a Doctor', first published in The Strand Magazine, then released in book form in 1894. A second series appeared in 1896. The Diary of a Doctor series has been likened to Sherlock Holmes - the first instalment, My First Patient, appeared in the July 1893 edition of The Strand Magazine, alongside Conan-Doyle's Holmes story 'The Adventure of the Crooked Man'.The Literary News had this to say on the collection of stories: Twelve stories, presenting some cases supposed to have come under the direct attention of a young London physician. It is claimed by their collaborating authors that several of the tales included are founded on actual experience, and that all have been written with a close observance to medical facts, and in accordance with the advances made in surgery during the last decade.

Book excerpt: Concentrating on works by authors such as Fergus Hume, Arthur Conan Doyle, Grant Allen, L.T. Meade, and Marie Belloc Lowndes, Christopher Pittard explores the complex relation between the emergence of detective fictions in the 1880s and 1890s and the concept of purity. The centrality of material and moral purity as a theme of the genre, Pittard argues, both reflected and satirised a contemporary discourse of degeneration in which criminality was equated with dirt and disease and where national boundaries were guarded against the threat of the criminal foreigner. Situating his discussion within the ideologies underpinning George Newnes's Strand Magazine as well as a wide range of nonfiction texts, Pittard demonstrates that the genre was a response to the seductive and impure delights associated with sensation and gothic novels. Further, Pittard suggests that criticism of detective fiction has in turn become obsessed with the idea of purity, thus illustrating how a genre concerned with policing the impure itself became subject to the same fear of contamination. Contributing to the richness of Pittard's project are his discussions of the convergence of medical discourse and detective fiction in the 1890s, including the way social protest movements like the antivivisectionist campaigns and medical explorations of criminality raised questions related to moral purity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to offer a critical analysis of one variant of the mystery story or novel—the use of a physician as the major detective. There is little difference between a medical “case study” and a mystery story. The book reviews the works of major authors, from R. Austin Freeman, Helen McCloy, Josephine Bell, and H.C. Bailey, to Patricia Cornwell, Kathy Reichs, Aaron Elkins, and Colin Cotterill, with briefer reviews of minor authors. It also addresses historical (fictional) physician detectives, psychological detectives, and physician detective nonfiction. Physicians and health workers are avid readers of detective fiction and will welcome this volume, which addresses their specific interests. Its critical analysis of books that have long been viewed as central to detective fiction will also appeal to fans of the mystery story.

This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Mussell reads nineteenth-century scientific debates in light of recent theoretical discussions of scientific writing to propose a new methodology for understanding the periodical press in terms of its movements in time and space. That there is no disjunction between text and object is already recognized in science studies, Mussell argues; however, this principle should also be extended to our understanding of print culture within its cultural context. He provides historical accounts of scientific controversy, documents references to time and space in the periodical press, and follows magazines and journals as they circulate through society to shed new light on the dissemination and distribution of periodicals, authorship and textual authority, and the role of mediation in material culture. Well-known writers like H. G. Wells and Arthur Conan Doyle are discovered in new contexts, while other authors, publishers, editors, and scientists are discussed for the first time. Mussell is persuasive in showing how his methodology increases our understanding of the process of transformation and translation that underpins the production of print and informs current debates about the status of digital publication and the preservation of archival material in electronic forms. Adding to the book's usefulness are an extended bibliography and a discussion of recent debates regarding digital publication.
