I have at times transposed phrases, sentences, and indeed whole paragraphs and pages. Not only have I transposed, I have also cut repetitions, sentences and paragraphs, introduced after the manner of the old chronicles. All this I did to keep the matter to the point, and save from tediousness, to keep the different stories to the limits of this book, to preserve our present-day sense of mod esty, and in manner to set aside words the use of which is lost, and other words still in our every-day speech but with a different meaning from that of olden time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Books of Chronicles Of the nine books included in the Kethubim or Hagiographa, the following are regarded as historical: Esther, Daniel, Chronicles, and Ezra and Nehemiah. The second of these is partly historical and partly prophetical, and belongs to the period of the captivity. The first is a monograph, standing by itself, and referring to a singular instance of the protection vouchsafed by Divine Providence to the Jews of the dispersion under the Persian Empire. The other three form really and designedly a continuous history from the beginning of time, and more fully from the accession of David to the administration of Nehemiah. The books of Chronicles are the only proper antecedent to the history of the times after the captivity. The Occasion. - The books of Ezra and Nehemiah contain a narrative of events occurring after the return of the Jews from the exile of seventy years; the former having for its central event the rebuilding of the temple, the latter the restoration of the walls of Jerusalem. The grand difference in the condition of this people after the captivity was this, that the civil and religious affairs of the nation were no longer governed by a common principle, or as we should say, that the state and the church were no longer the counterparts of one common polity. The ministers of religion still continued to acknowledge the supremacy of God and profess obedience to His law. But the rulers of the state had become subject to the paramount authority of a foreign and heathen power. It is true that a descendant of David was for some years the civil head of the community. But this was a short-lived and evanescent shadow of the kingdom that was to have no end. Zerubbabel, son of Shealtiel, was the leader of the returning colony. But we read of no descendant of his holding sway over Judah. It is true that the posterity of Judah continued to be a nation having a civil polity in certain respects peculiar to itself. But in other respects it was modified and controlled by the arbitrary will of an external power. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Belt and Spur: Stories of the Knights of the Middle Ages From the Old Chronicles The following stories of battles and tournaments have been drawn from the pages of the Old chroui cles, and are told as the chronicler tells them; sometimes in an abridged and condensed form, but as far as possible, in the spirit and style of the original. The story Of Coeur de Lion's Crusade is taken from the 'itinerary of Richard the First, ' by Geoffrey Vinsant. The deeds Of the Scottish Knights in the reign of Edward the Third are related by Jean Le Bel, the chronicler whose work was so largely borrowed by Froissart. The Jousts of St. Inghel berth are described by Froissart himself. It is Henry the Fifth's chaplain who tells of his sove reign's achievements in France; and Chastelain, the Burgundian chronicler, who gives us the story of the tournaments at Stirling and at Bruges, in which Sir Jacques de Lalain bore a part. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chronicles of Old Riverby Judge Winn was a native of Boston. He was a brusque man whose word was law, both in his household and among his associates. Still, when ever the family physician found any indication of failing health in one of the children, his austerity disappeared and he became as nervous as a woman. When, in the early eighties, he was told that Rachel, his only daughter, required a change of air in order to go on with her studies in the fall, the judge and his devoted wife immediately set about making arrangements for the girl to spend the summer at Old Riverby. Since John Bradley, the inn-keeper, is an Old friend of mine, that is just the place for her, declared the judge. Rachel Winn, then a girl of seventeen, was tall and slight. Just a suggestion of rose flushed her cheeks, and the wealth Of nut-brown hair plaited in two braids and coiled about her head simulated a coronet. There was nothing striking in her per sonal appearance except when some pathetic tale roused her sympathies; then the soft brown eyes were expressive of unusual depth of feeling. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Books of Chronicles: With Maps, Notes and Introduction The present General Editor for the Old Testament in the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges desires to say that, in accordance with the policy of his predecessor the Bishop of Worcester, he does not hold himself responsible for the particular interpretations adopted or for the opinions expressed by the editors of the several Books, nor has he endeavoured to bring them into agreement with one another. It is inevitable that there should be differences of opinion in regard to many questions of criticism and interpretation, and it seems best that these differences should find free expression in different volumes. He has endeavoured to secure, as far as possible, that the general scope and character of the series should be observed, and that views which have a reasonable claim to consideration should not be ignored, but he has felt it best that the final responsibility should, in general, rest with the individual contributors. The chairman of the Board asked the question with the constrained, nervous manner of the man who knows only too well that there is further business to consider - unpleasant business. Followed a moment of strained silence, the while the chairman twirled a pencil nervously in his fingers, his eyes downcast upon it. The other men in the room, sitting very still, fixed their eyes vacantly on space, striving to look unconcerned. One of them glanced furtively' at another, but encountering the other's glance wavering in his direction he averted his face quickly, as though caught in a disreputable act. Some one shifted his position and the sound startled, rasping in the tense atmosphere of the room. The chairman started nervously, then made an effort to get himself in hand. But when he spoke his voice was querulous, fretful. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old World Hero Stories IT is not so many years since the school history was practi cally a dry chronicle of discoveries, settlements, and wars. A narrative that was in any degree personal and anecdotal was gazed upon askance as being necessarily unscholarly and undignified. Discoveries and settlements and wars there must be, and accounts of them must be written and made familiar; but the one and only way to bring past issues into the life of a child with any vividness is first to interest him in the actors themselves. Carlyle says that history is at bot tom the history of the great men who have worked here. There is no better introduction to the study of the Augustan Age than the story of the life of Augustus; no better way to arouse interest in the philosophy of Plato and Socrates than the tales of their lives. 'tis a little, old church town a few mile from St. Tid, where the slate quarries gape in the midst of the earth but St. Tid's church be a thing of yesterday, whereas ours of St. Luce dates back to the times of the Seventh Henry, or some such far-away age as that. 'twas a funny old place, and stories was still handed down about it, and one fine yarn reported that a very rich and rare treasure had been hid in the church and, of course, nobody could say it wasn't true. But you must hear the tale because the strange story I am going to tell you hangs thereon.
