To come there and fill the first place was in itself a daily tempting of the scaffold. But supported by her motherly courage, she was enabled to win the affection of the poor by consoling the misery of all without distino tion, and to make herself indispensable to the rich by min istering to their pleasures. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Honore De Balzac: His Life and Writings Although it was published nine years ago, Miss Mary F. Sandars's "Balzac" remains a valuable piece of work, and I am extremely glad that it has been thought advisable to reproduce it in a new shape. It is a useful book for many reasons. In the first place it gives, without too lengthy criticism of particular works of Balzac, a most readable account of a complicated and interesting life. In the next place it is based on those "Lettres a I'Etrangere" which Balzac wrote to his Polish friend Madame Hanska, in the absence of which we have no means of ascertaining the inner life of the distinguished author. Books like those of Sir Frederick Wedmore in the "Great Writers" Series, or Miss Wormeley's Memoir, have become out of date. Mr. Saintsbury's various critical notices retain their original value, but, of course, the real source of much of our present knowledge is due to the collections of M. de Spoelberch de Lovenjoul together with various pamphlets replete with all the conscientious zeal of a thoroughgoing admirer. As Miss Sandars herself notes, Dr. George Brandes has written some valuable chapters in one of the volumes of his "Main Currents of Nineteenth-Century Literature," which, however, do not deal with the details of the novelist's life, but rather with the position which he holds in modern literature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World's Story Tellers: Stories by Honore De Balzac Balzac used to tell a story of his father, who, when asked to carve a partridge, not knowing how to set about it, rolled up his sleeves, gripped his knife and fork, and cut it in four with such energy as to cleave the plate at the same time and embed the knife in the table. That was the manner of setting about things natural to Balzac himself. He was a 'joyous wild boar' of a man, with the build and strength of a navvy. He was never ill. Gautier tells us that the habitual ex pression of that powerful face was a kind of Rabelaisian glee. Now a man who could write the Comedie Humaine, and look aside from it with a Rabelaisian glee was perhaps the only kind of man who could have attempted such a task without being turned, willy nilly, into a pedant. It has that suggestion of moss-grown tran quillity that the clatter of a sabot accentu ates, and in wandering through it any imag inative loiterer might fancy himself in the mouldering avenue of a forgotten town. But to return to the point, or rather to the house. In it lives a gentleman and with him a mem ory and a library. The gentleman himself may be spared any personalities. The mem ory which he cultivates is that of Balzac, while the library contains very nearly every thing that is in any way connected with the history and works of the French realist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Honore De Balzac Balzac's short stories, which we call in French nouvelles, are, generally speaking, not the best-known or the most popular part of his work; nor are they the part best fitted to give a true and complete idea of his genius. But some of them are none the less masterpieces in their kind; they have characteristics and a significance not always possessed by their author's long novels, such as Eugenie Grandet or Cousin Pons; and finally, for this very reason, they hold in the unfinished structure of The Human Comedy a place which it will be interesting to try to determine. That is all that will be attempted in this Introduction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Honore De Balzac IF it be true of Moliere that he was not only the greatest of comic authors, but comedy itself, it may be said of Balzac that he was not only the greatest, the most fertile and diverse of our novelists, but the novel itself; and the object of the present volume is to show that in saying this I say nothing but the ah solute and exact truth. For this reason the reader is requested not to seek in the follow ing pages a biography of Honoré de Balzac, or what to-day goes by that name - infor mation about his origin, anecdotes of his college days, the tittle-tattle of his love-affairs, and the tedious narrative of his quarrels with newspapers or publishers - but solely a study of his work: a study in which, of course, I do not refrain from speaking, when necessary, of the man and of the romance of his life, but Wherein I wish especially to define, to ex plain, and to characterise his work - which, in my opinion, would remain the same if Balzac, instead of being born in Tours, had been born, for instance, in Castelnaudary, and if, in place of studying law, he had studied medicine. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ursule Mirouet: And Other Stories "Ursule Mirouet, dedicated by Balzac to his niece, Sophie Surville, and avowedly written "in the fear of the young person," or, as the author more elegantly puts it, "in uncompromising respect of the noble principles of a pious education," exposes itself by the very fact to two different sorts of prejudice. It is sure to be cried up by one set of judges as "wholesome," and to be cried down by another as "goody." The latter charge is certainly unfair, for Balzac has by no means written the book in rose-pink and sky-blue only, nor has he been afraid to show things more or less as they are. Nevertheless, it is difficult not to admit that evidences of restraint and convention do exist. Ursule - even more than Eugenie, who becomes a person on at least two occasions, her struggle with her father, and her revanche over her cousin - is a thing of shreds and patches, an ideal being in whom that mysterious "candor," to which the French attach such excessive value in a girl, and which they make such haste to do away with altogether in a woman, seems to shut out all positive individuality. She is very nice; but she is not very human. Nor can the machinery of dreams, hypnotism, Swedenborgianism, and whatnot, which Balzac, following out one of his well-known manias, chose to work into the book, be said to add very largely to its verisimilitude. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Balzac Honore's mother, thirty-two years younger than her husband and twenty-one years older than her son, was a highly intelligent woman, very witty, very pretty, with beautiful eyes, a long thin nose, a thin and rather tight lipped mouth; dry, masterful, and overbearing, her hobby being occult science and the daringly metaphysical authors, a bent which she handed on at one time to her son. She was to outlive Honore by some years; she died, in 1853, at seventy-five years of age. It is generally believed that Balzac put his mother's least pleasing traits into his portrait of la Cousine Bette.
