Book excerpt: 'It is easier to know people in small places. Sometimes you can't help knowing them. Like the boy who walks four miles to school; or the elderly gentleman who is up every morning at five o'clock, taking his morning walk (tap-tap-tap, I hear his walking stick below my window); or that busy little woman gathering firewood for the winter; or the man from the nursery who sells me a potted geranium and ends up telling me the story of his life... So many stories waiting to be told! And, as I have discovered, small towns may be smaller than cities, and there may be fewer people living in them, but the stories they provide a writer with are big, they contain worlds upon worlds within them.'

In his book "Captain Black- True Stories of a Small Town Cop" he takes you along with him as he deals with everything from an angry elderly woman with a sledgehammer and a dead mouse, to the hunt for a cold-blooded assassin who gunned down Kaufman County Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse on the courthouse square, and the desperate attempt to find the killer after he struck again, viciously murdering the District Attorney Mike McClelland, and his wife Cynthia, inside their Forney, Texas home. If you think that small town cops only write tickets and drink coffee, you will definitely change your outlook after reading this book!

This book was released on 2007-07-01 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This very readable book will get you all fired up about small-town life in the 1950s! Flaunting a Dave Barry brand of humor, dozens of period photos, 50 unique drawings, 31 stand-alone stories, and often a literary level of writing, it rides the reader on a metaphorical Whizzer motorbike journey through life, from days of innocence through forsaken virtue. Along the way, village fires are both personal tragedies and popular roadside attractions. Actual events and historical personages mist over like foggy mornings. How much of each account is fact, how much is fiction? The author asks the reader to decide--and offers help with two different beginnings and endings! Everything in this book is, of course, absolutely, positively true. Sort of.

Book excerpt: Take a moment and picture your childhood home. Try to visualize a short walk from your doorstep. Can you conjure up your neighborhood, nearby houses or businesses, and the people who lived or worked in them? Can you recall the events that unfolded nearby, or the activities that once filled your childhood world? Roger Engle took this mental journey throughout his hometown, and in doing so, rediscovered his childhood around every corner. Stories from a Small Town places us in Hedgesville, West Virginia, between the years of 1948 and 1964, and encourages us to meander there at a pace governed by the whimsy of a child. Mr. Engle takes us along on his adventures around town and into the surrounding wilderness, and provides an unfettered and rather amusing view into the life domestic. With tenderness and grit, he reveals both the challenges and opportunities of growing up in a working-class family during self-sufficient times. Stories from a Small Town offers us a delightfully vivid portrait of childhood, and may very well inspire us to remember, document, and share with future generations the stories of our own lives--while we are still able.

Book excerpt: Small Town is a fictional story of a familys generational navigation through the Jim Crow South. The book is a collection of fictional stories woven together to describe the lives, times, and struggles of a black family living in the Deep South in a climate of racial animus. Three generations of family members experiences are depicted in a plethora of colorful characters. The only thing that helped this family through precarious and challenging times was their faith, family, and friends. Ultimately, the book Small Town shows us that no matter what we encounter or embark on in life, we can achieve and be successful under even the most distressful circumstances. This familys accomplishments were typical of a generation of people who were persistent and who instilled perseverance in their children, passed down from generation to generation. The Southern town where the setting of the book is depicted is a typical southern small town as they existed after the Civil War Reconstruction. Small Town refers not only to the population of the Southern town but also its mentality. Small towns were microcosms of the racist and white-supremacist attitudes that were pervasive below the Mason-Dixon line before and after landmark civil rights legislations. Rumors and rumors of rumors were a constant in this environment. Everyone knew your comings and goings in this small American town, and similarly, just like the major cities, only a few prominent families dictated who would be the haves and the have-nots. The fictional family in this book displayed the balance and flexibility to walk the tightrope of race and bigotry to maintain a social status that was rare and unique for black families in the Deep South. Religion and education were the foundations for this family and were their main weapons against any adversity that they encountered.

Book excerpt: I moved to Maine when I was five. I lived with my mother and father while my father traveled the globe with the Marine Corps. When I was ten, my father retired, and we moved to my mother's ancestral home. I resented my parents for tearing me away from the south. There was nothing good about living in the small town of Brownville Junction. School friends lived in a different area code, making it impossible talking on the phone or playing outside impossible. I spent my summers reading about adventures elsewhere; anyplace but the junction. I hid away in the forest, playing make believe, imagining the world beyond our borders. A petulant child, I found this tiny community to be suffocating. I went through the motions, longing to shed these shackles. After graduation, I fled. Free from Maine, I never imagined I'd look back. Decades later, I my mind wanders North to a world I loathed in my youth. Homesick, I'm returning to my roots. I need to understand the impact of a small town on the man I am today. What is it about this tight-knit community that draws us back? What about the land molds its people? How does our geography and ancestry forge us into the adults we will become? What is in the heart of a Mainer? I.Am.Maine is a journey to find my way home.
