Book excerpt: Sara Jane Lippincott (1823-1904) was an American author, better known by the pseudonym Grace Greenwood. She was born at Pompey, N. Y.. Her family moved to New Brighton, Pennsylvania, where her father was a physician, and she there attended the Greenwood Institute, a ladies' academy, from which she may have taken her pseudonym. In 1853, she married Leander K. Lippincott, but he left the country in 1876 after indictment for land fraud. Her earliest writing was poetry and children's stories, and with her husband she started the Little Pilgrim (1854), an American children's magazine. She was soon producing magazine articles and essays, and became one of the earliest regular female newspaper correspondents. In 1852 she went to Europe on assignment for the New York Times. She was an active supporter of women's rights and of the anti-slavery movement, and during the Civil War wrote articles from Washington DC in aid of the Northern cause. Her works include: Greenwood Leaves (1850), History of my Pets (1851), Merrie England (1855), Bonnie Scotland (1861), Stories of Many Lands (1867) and Queen Victoria: Her Girlhood and Womanhood (1883).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories and Legends of Travel and History, for Children The English government, with all its faults, has always been wise and generous toward the people in regard to their out-door comfort and pleasure. It does not mean that they shall be stifled for want of air, or cramped for room to exercise in. Everywhere over the kingdom, the traveller sees shady parks, pleasant gardens, breezy downs, and wide heaths, Open to the public, and as much for the enjoyment of the poor as the rich. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Story of Christopher Columbus for Little Children He remembered in his readings of the book of Marco Polo's travels that the people whom he had met were heathen who knew little about the dear God who had made the world, and nothing at all about His son, Christ Jesus, and as Christopher Columbus loved very dearly the Christian religion, his mind became filled with a longing to carry it across the great seas to this far-away coun try. The more he thought about it the more he wanted to go, until his whole life was filled with the one thought of how to get hold of some ships to prove that the earth was round, and that these far-away heathens could be reached. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories and Travels You have here, my good friends, sundry moral and entertaining stories, invented by the monks of old, and used by them for amusement, as well as for instruction; from which the most celebrated poets, of our own and other lands, have condescended to draw their plots. The improvements and refinements of this age will naturally lead you to condemn as absurdities, many of the incidents with which these tales abound. Considering the knowledge of the present day, you are justified in so doing. But I pray you to bear in mind that few qualities are more dependent on time, than probability and improbability. When you read these tales, you must, for the time, retrace your steps to the age in which they were written; and though the tale may seem absurd to us of this day, yet, if it was calculated to impress the minds of those for whom it was invented, and to whom it was told, its merit was great, and therefore deserving of due praise. A giant or a magician was as probable to the people of the middle ages, as electricity to us. I pray you bear this in mind whilst you judge of these tales. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Museum Stories for Children, Vol. 20: February-April, 1933 Foxes are related to dogs and jackals, but are superior to these cousins in sagacity, cunning and intelligence. The word Reynard means strong in counsel or keen-witted. It is this characteristic which has caused the fox to be the chief actor in folk-tales of all lands and to continue to live in lands occupied by men and dogs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Museum Stories for Children, Vol. 12: October-December, 1929 One of the greatest thrills you can ever experience will come when you have an opportunity to climb a very high mountain. Usually, the lower slopes are covered with magnificent forests. Beyond this comes an area of gnarled, twisted trees that cling closely to Mother Earth for support and shelter. Highest of all is the region of jagged, barren rocks. This is. The kingdom of cloud and wind, and wind is a relentless ruler. It IS in this land that glaciers have their beginning. Tiny wisps of vapor cradled in winds from far distant seas, or wafted up from the lowlands beneath, are here swept into cloud masses which swirl about the treeless summits, fill the crevices, or change at the touch of the wind into flakes of snow. At first, these flakes are dry and powdery, drift about and fall upon the upper heights. They fill the hollows which are sheltered from the strong winds and if the mountain is extremely high, as in Alaska or Switzerland, the snow may accumulate until its own weight is such as to cause it to creep slowly out of its hollow. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Museum Stories for Children, Vol. 29: October-November, 1937 Less than ten years ago two adventurous Americans decided to go on a hunting trip to Western China and Tibet. They intended to hunt the rare giant panda, but they had so little hope of getting one that they kept the object of their hunt a secret. This was not the first time these two adventurers, Theodore and Kermit Roosevelt, had traveled in Tibet, so they bore no hard feelings when the natives scratched their ears and stuck their tongues out at them. They knew that was just a friendly Tibetan greeting. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
