Book Synopsis Store Front Ii (mini Edition) by : James T. Murray
Download or read book Store Front Ii (mini Edition) written by James T. Murray and published by Gingko Press Editions. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With Store Front II the Murrays continued their documentation of an important cross-section of New York's 'Mom and Pop' economy. The Murray's penetrating photographs are only half the story though. Their copious background texts, gleaned largely from interviews with the stores' owners and employees, bring wonderful colour and nuance to the importance of these unique one-off establishments. The Murrays have rendered the out of the way bodegas, candy shops and record stores just as faithfully as the historically important institutions and well known restaurants, bars and cafes.
Book Synopsis Storefront Revolution by : Craig Cox
Download or read book Storefront Revolution written by Craig Cox and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1960s, the cooperative networks of food stores, restaurants, bakeries, bookstores, and housing alternatives were part counterculture, part social experiment, part economic utopia, and part revolutionary political statement. The co-ops gave activists a place where they could both express themselves and accomplish at least some small-scale changes. By the mid-1970s, dozens of food co-ops and other consumer- and work-owned enterprises were operating throughout the Twin Cities, and an alternative economic network - with a People's Warehouse at its hub - was beginning to transform the economic landscape of the metropolitan Minneapolis-St. Paul area. However, these co-op activists could not always agree among themselves on their goals. Craig Cox, a journalist who was active in the co-op movement, here provides the first book to look at food co-ops during the 1960s and 1970s. He presents a dramatic story of hope and conflict within the Minneapolis network, one of the largest co-op structures in the country. His "view from the front" of the "Co-op War" that ensued between those who wanted personal liberation through the movement and those who wanted a working-class revolution challenges us to re-thing possiblities for social and political change. Cox provides not a cynical portrait of sixties idealism, but a moving insight into an era when anything seemed possible.

Download or read book Storefront Sting written by Lou Valoze and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-02-10 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thrilling story memorializes one of the most dangerous--and successful--series of undercover operations conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Written by the special agent who took these operations from disrupting small time fencing schemes to infiltrating major criminal organizations, this book is the first story of these secretive operations. During the operation's run from 2006 to 2014, Lou Valoze's fictitious businesses allowed his team of undercover agents to take thousands of weapons out of circulation and millions of dollars of drugs off the street. Through these covert "storefront" operations, the author developed a unique investigative blueprint for removing guns from the hands of violent felons and drug dealers. This book also explores the dark reality of living a double life and how it becomes difficult to tell the difference between the good guys and bad guys.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Some of Shanley’s sharpest comic writing in years… His intense engagement with questions of religion and ethics remains distinctive and invigorating.” — Charles Isherwood, New York Times “There’s a deeper philosophical vein that the author mines, allowing his language to acquire the heft and timbre of a serious moral debate…We taste bitterness, but also much that is sweet.” — David Cote, TimeOut New York “A postmodern morality play that’s as funny as it is bracing.” — Karen D’Souza, San Jose Mercury News Concluding the “Church and State” trilogy of plays that began with Doubt and Defiance, Storefront Church tells the story of a Bronx Borough President who is forced by the mortgage crisis into a confrontation with a local minister. Blending earthy humor and philosophical reflection, this compassionate morality tale is an exploration of the often thorny relationship between spiritual experience and social action. Download or read book Sandfuture written by Justin Beal and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2021-09-14 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An account of the life and work of the architect Minoru Yamasaki that leads the author to consider how (and for whom) architectural history is written. Sandfuture is a book about the life of the architect Minoru Yamasaki (1912–1986), who remains on the margins of history despite the enormous influence of his work on American architecture and society. That Yamasaki’s most famous projects—the Pruitt-Igoe apartments in St. Louis and the original World Trade Center in New York—were both destroyed on national television, thirty years apart, makes his relative obscurity all the more remarkable. Sandfuture is also a book about an artist interrogating art and architecture’s role in culture as New York changes drastically after a decade bracketed by terrorism and natural disaster. From the central thread of Yamasaki’s life, Sandfuture spirals outward to include reflections on a wide range of subjects, from the figure of the architect in literature and film and transformations in the contemporary art market to the perils of sick buildings and the broader social and political implications of how, and for whom, cities are built. The result is at once sophisticated in its understanding of material culture and novelistic in its telling of a good story.
