Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stocks of Leaf Tobacco Owned by Dealers and Manufacturers: August 16, 1940 Stocks of American-grown cigar-filler type tobacco amounted to pounds on July about 4 million pounds lower than stocks on July 1, 1939. Type 41, Pennsylvania Seedleaf stocks on July 1, 1940, were pounds. Of this total about 73 million pounds were binders and fillers and about 29 million pounds were stemming grades or lower. The stocks of Type 41 show more than a normal decrease in the period from April 1 to July 1. This is due to the fact that one reporter failed to allow fpr shrinkage losses in his earlier reports, resulting in a large cumulative error. Re vised reports of stocks of this type will be issued at an early date. Type 42, Gebhardt stocks, on July 1, 1940, were pounds Type 43, Zimmer, pounds; Type 44, Dutch, pounds Type 45, Georgia and Florida Sun-grown, pounds; Type 46, pounds in the United States, and pounds in Puerto Rico. The cigar binder type stocks, some of which are used for wrappers, were about 12 million pounds higher on July 1, 1940, than they were on July 1, 1939. Total binder type stocks were reported as pounds on July 1, 1940. Type 51, Connecticut Broad leaf stocks were reported as pounds; Type 52, Connecticut Havana Seed, pounds; Type 53, New York and Pennsylvania Havana Seed, pounds; Type 54, Southern Wisconsin, pounds; and Type 55, Northern Wisconsin, pounds.
