Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Wyckoff was a Wall Street legend. Not only did he make a fortune, but he also was the longtime editor and publisher of The Magazine of Wall Street and the developer of successful methods to analyze and forecast the market. In this book, originally published in 1922, Wyckoff lays out his insider's knowledge for everyone, especially those who are willing to study before risking one's own money. After all, he wrote, "in Wall Street as anywhere else, the chief essential is common sense, coupled with study and practical experience." He covers topics such as the six rules he's found helpful, why he adopted Harriman's principle, what he looks for before buying a bond, the earmarks of a desirable investment, the importance of knowing who owns a stock, and how to recognize manipulation in the market. RICHARD D. WYCKOFF edited and published The Magazine of Wall Street and wrote Studies in Tape Reading and other books on his stock market techniques. He was an early proponent of ticker tape reading, and his method of analyzing the market is still used by brokers and traders today.

This book was released on 2022-04-28 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century ago, life expectancy was roughly 40 years, hence all income could be consumed, as for most people, there was no need to save for retirement. Today, things have drastically changed: Life expectancy exceeds 80 years in many countries, and one should expect to live and consume many years after retirement. Thus, we have many investors with various investment horizons, where the length of the investment horizon becomes a crucial factor in determining the best investment diversification. This book analyzes the effect of the investment horizon on the optimal diversification, specifically between stocks and bonds: Should a young investor and an older investor have the same portfolio? Is it recommended to savers for retirement to change the asset allocation between stocks and bonds as they grow older, as life cycle mutual funds do in practice? Is the idiom 'stocks for the long run' backed by scientific evidence? We analyze for which horizons it is recommended to employ the popular Mean-Variance rule and for which horizons employing this rule induces an economic distortion, hence a loss to the investors. It is shown that all relevant parameters for investment choice (means, variances, and correlations) change in a non-linear way with the horizon, a fact that makes the investment horizon crucial for investment choices. Similarly, the popular Sharpe, Treynor, and Jensen performance indices vary with the assumed horizon even in the case of independence over time. To analyze all the above issues, we employ the Mean-Variance rule and Stochastic Dominance rules, as well as direct expected utility calculations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engaging book offers a primer on stocks and bonds, using easy-to-understand language to explain how they function and why they are important. It will be a valuable resource for both economics students and readers interested in investing. Although news outlets provide daily updates on stock market performance, many Americans have little understanding of how stocks and stock exchanges work. Yet stocks, along with government and corporate bonds, represent two key cornerstones of modern economics. While the average American may think of them as simply two types of investments, stocks and bonds have impacts on the economy that go far beyond the realm of personal finance. The latest volume in Greenwood's new Student Guides to Business and Economics series, Stocks and Bonds gives readers an in-depth yet reader-friendly look at these integral components of the U.S. and global economy. It explores the different types of bonds, how stocks and stock exchanges work, and why periodic crashes and crises occur. It explains fundamental concepts such as risk versus return, interest rates, and behavioral economics, using real-world examples to illustrate key points. It also provides practical tried-and-true recommendations for investing in stocks and bonds.
