Book excerpt: This volume is a revised and enlarged version of Chapter 3 of. a book with the same title, published in Romanian in 1968. The revision resulted in a new book which has been divided into two of the large amount of new material. The whole book parts because is intended to introduce mathematicians and biologists with a strong mathematical background to the study of stochastic processes and their applications in biological sciences. It is meant to serve both as a textbook and a survey of recent developments. Biology studies complex situations and therefore needs skilful methods of abstraction. Stochastic models, being both vigorous in their specification and flexible in their manipulation, are the most suitable tools for studying such situations. This circumstance deter mined the writing of this volume which represents a comprehensive cross section of modern biological problems on the theory of stochastic processes. Because of the way some specific problems have been treat ed, this volume may also be useful to research scientists in any other field of science, interested in the possibilities and results of stochastic modelling. To understand the material presented, the reader needs to be acquainted with probability theory, as given in a sound introductory course, and be capable of abstraction.

Book excerpt: This volume is a revised and enlarged version of Chapters 1 and 2 of a book with the same title, published in Romanian in 1968. The revision resulted in a new book which has been divided into two parts because of the large amount of new material. The present part is intended to introduce mathematicians and biologists with a strong mathematical and probabilistic background to the study of stochastic processes. We hope some readers will be able to discover by themselves the new features of our treatment such as the inclusion of some unusual topics, the special attention paid to some usual topics, and the grouping of the material. We draw the reader's attention to the numbering, because there are structural differences between the two parts. In Part I there are Chapters, Sections, Subsections, Paragraphs and Subparagraphs. Thus the numbering a. b. c. d. e refers to Subparagraph e of Paragraph d of Subsection c of Section b of Chapter a. Definitions, theorems lemmas and propositions are numbered a. b. n, n = 1,2, . . . , where a indicates the chapter and b the section. In Part II there are Sections, Subsections, Paragraphs, and SUbparagraphs. Thus the numbering a. b. c. d refers to Subparagraph d of Paragraph c of Subsection b of Section a. Theorems and lemmas are numbered a. n, n = 1, 2, . . . , where a indicates the section.

This book was released on 2021-06-18 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook, now in its fourth edition, offers a rigorous and self-contained introduction to the theory of continuous-time stochastic processes, stochastic integrals, and stochastic differential equations. Expertly balancing theory and applications, it features concrete examples of modeling real-world problems from biology, medicine, finance, and insurance using stochastic methods. No previous knowledge of stochastic processes is required. Unlike other books on stochastic methods that specialize in a specific field of applications, this volume examines the ways in which similar stochastic methods can be applied across different fields. Beginning with the fundamentals of probability, the authors go on to introduce the theory of stochastic processes, the Itô Integral, and stochastic differential equations. The following chapters then explore stability, stationarity, and ergodicity. The second half of the book is dedicated to applications to a variety of fields, including finance, biology, and medicine. Some highlights of this fourth edition include a more rigorous introduction to Gaussian white noise, additional material on the stability of stochastic semigroups used in models of population dynamics and epidemic systems, and the expansion of methods of analysis of one-dimensional stochastic differential equations. An Introduction to Continuous-Time Stochastic Processes, Fourth Edition is intended for graduate students taking an introductory course on stochastic processes, applied probability, stochastic calculus, mathematical finance, or mathematical biology. Prerequisites include knowledge of calculus and some analysis; exposure to probability would be helpful but not required since the necessary fundamentals of measure and integration are provided. Researchers and practitioners in mathematical finance, biomathematics, biotechnology, and engineering will also find this volume to be of interest, particularly the applications explored in the second half of the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although stochastic kinetic models are increasingly accepted as the best way to represent and simulate genetic and biochemical networks, most researchers in the field have limited knowledge of stochastic process theory. The stochastic processes formalism provides a beautiful, elegant, and coherent foundation for chemical kinetics and there is a wealth of associated theory every bit as powerful and elegant as that for conventional continuous deterministic models. The time is right for an introductory text written from this perspective. Stochastic Modelling for Systems Biology presents an accessible introduction to stochastic modelling using examples that are familiar to systems biology researchers. Focusing on computer simulation, the author examines the use of stochastic processes for modelling biological systems. He provides a comprehensive understanding of stochastic kinetic modelling of biological networks in the systems biology context. The text covers the latest simulation techniques and research material, such as parameter inference, and includes many examples and figures as well as software code in R for various applications. While emphasizing the necessary probabilistic and stochastic methods, the author takes a practical approach, rooting his theoretical development in discussions of the intended application. Written with self-study in mind, the book includes technical chapters that deal with the difficult problems of inference for stochastic kinetic models from experimental data. Providing enough background information to make the subject accessible to the non-specialist, the book integrates a fairly diverse literature into a single convenient and notationally consistent source.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops the theory of continuous and discrete stochastic processes within the context of cell biology. In the second edition the material has been significantly expanded, particularly within the context of nonequilibrium and self-organizing systems. Given the amount of additional material, the book has been divided into two volumes, with volume I mainly covering molecular processes and volume II focusing on cellular processes. A wide range of biological topics are covered in the new edition, including stochastic ion channels and excitable systems, molecular motors, stochastic gene networks, genetic switches and oscillators, epigenetics, normal and anomalous diffusion in complex cellular environments, stochastically-gated diffusion, active intracellular transport, signal transduction, cell sensing, bacterial chemotaxis, intracellular pattern formation, cell polarization, cell mechanics, biological polymers and membranes, nuclear structure and dynamics, biological condensates, molecular aggregation and nucleation, cellular length control, cell mitosis, cell motility, cell adhesion, cytoneme-based morphogenesis, bacterial growth, and quorum sensing. The book also provides a pedagogical introduction to the theory of stochastic and nonequilibrium processes – Fokker Planck equations, stochastic differential equations, stochastic calculus, master equations and jump Markov processes, birth-death processes, Poisson processes, first passage time problems, stochastic hybrid systems, queuing and renewal theory, narrow capture and escape, extreme statistics, search processes and stochastic resetting, exclusion processes, WKB methods, large deviation theory, path integrals, martingales and branching processes, numerical methods, linear response theory, phase separation, fluctuation-dissipation theorems, age-structured models, and statistical field theory. This text is primarily aimed at graduate students and researchers working in mathematical biology, statistical and biological physicists, and applied mathematicians interested in stochastic modeling. Applied probabilists should also find it of interest. It provides significant background material in applied mathematics and statistical physics, and introduces concepts in stochastic and nonequilibrium processes via motivating biological applications. The book is highly illustrated and contains a large number of examples and exercises that further develop the models and ideas in the body of the text. It is based on a course that the author has taught at the University of Utah for many years.

This book was released on 2009-03-02 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patients are not alike! This simple truth is often ignored in the analysis of me- cal data, since most of the time results are presented for the “average” patient. As a result, potential variability between patients is ignored when presenting, e.g., the results of a multiple linear regression model. In medicine there are more and more attempts to individualize therapy; thus, from the author’s point of view biostatis- cians should support these efforts. Therefore, one of the tasks of the statistician is to identify heterogeneity of patients and, if possible, to explain part of it with known explanatory covariates. Finite mixture models may be used to aid this purpose. This book tries to show that there are a large range of applications. They include the analysis of gene - pression data, pharmacokinetics, toxicology, and the determinants of beta-carotene plasma levels. Other examples include disease clustering, data from psychophysi- ogy, and meta-analysis of published studies. The book is intended as a resource for those interested in applying these methods.
