Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph contains the developments of methods and tools to deal with structural uncertainties in the analysis of vibrating structures. This study was carried out to gain insight into the behavior of randomly parametered dynamical systems and to evolve computational tools to assess the reliability of large scale engineering structures. The formulation for the derivation of the stochastic dynamic stiffness matrix for a general curved Timoshenko beam element is presented. Subsequently, the method is extended to study the mean and variance of the stationary response of built-up structures when excited by stationary stochastic forces.

Book excerpt: Uncertainties in load and system properties play a significant role in reliability analysis of vibrating structural systems. The subject of random vibrations has evolved over the last few decades to deal with uncertainties in external loads. A well developed body of literature now exists which documents the status of this subject. Studies on the influƯence of system property uncertainties on reliability of vibrating structures is, however, of more recent origin. Currently, the problem of dynamic response characterization of sysƯtems with parameter uncertainties has emerged as a subject of intensive research. The motivation for this research activity arises from the need for a more accurate assessƯment of the safety of important and high cost structures like nuclear plant installations, satellites and long span bridges. The importance of the problem also lies in understandƯing phenomena like mode localization in nearly periodic structures and deviant system behaviour at high frequencies. It is now well established that these phenomena are strongly influenced by spatial imperfections in the vibrating systems. Design codes, as of now, are unable to systematically address the influence of scatter and uncertainties. Therefore, there is a need to develop robust design algorithms based on the probabilistic description of the uncertainties, leading to safer, better and less over-killed designs. Analysis of structures with parameter uncertainties is wrought with diffiƯculties, which primarily arise because the response variables are nonlinearly related to the stochastic system parameters; this being true even when structures are idealized to display linear material and deformation characteristics. The problem is further comƯpounded when nonlinear structural behaviour is included in the analysis. The analysis of systems with parameter uncertainties involves modeling of random fields for the system parameters, discretization of these random fields, solutions of stochastic diff.

Book excerpt: Nonlinearity and stochastic structural dynamics is of common interest to engineers and applied scientists belonging to many disciplines. Recent research in this area has been concentrated on the response and stability of nonlinear mechanical and structural systems subjected to random escitation. Simultaneously the focus of research has also been directed towards understanding intrinsic nonlinear phenomena like bifurcation and chaos in deterministic systems. These problems demand a high degree of sophistication in the analytical and numerical approaches. At the same time they arise from considerations of nonlinear system response to turbulence, earthquacke, wind, wave and guidancy excitations. The topic thus attracts votaries of both analytical rigour and practical applications. This books gives important and latest developments in the field presenting in a coherent fashion the research findings of leading international groups working in the area of nonlinear random vibration and chaos.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over a period of several years the field of probabilistic mechanics and com putational mechanics have progressed vigorously, but independently. With the advent of powerful computational hardware and the development of novel mechanical techniques, the field of stochastic mechanics has progressed in such a manner that the inherent uncertainty of quite complicated systems can be addressed. The first International Conference on Computational Stochastic Mechanics was convened in Corfu in September 1991 in an ef fort to provide a forum for the exchanging of ideas on the current status of computational methods as applied to stochastic mechanics and for identi fying needs for further research. The Conference covered both theoretical techniques and practical applications. The Conference also celebrated the 60th anniversary of the birthday of Dr. Masanobu Shinozuka, the Sollenberger Professor of Civil Engineering at Princeton University, whose work has contributed in such a great measure to the development of Computational Stochastic Mechanics. A brief sum mary of his career and achievements are given in the Dedication. This book comprises some of the papers presented at the meeting and cov ers sections on Theoretical Reliability Analysis; Damage Analysis; Applied Reliability Analysis; Theoretical Random Vibrations; Stochastic Finite Ele ment Concept; Fatigue and Fracture; Monte Carlo Simulations; Earthquake Engineering Applications; Materials; Applied Random Vibrations; Applied Stochastic Finite Element Analysis, and Flow Related Applications and Chaotic Dynamics. The Editors hope that the book will be a valuable contribution to the grow ing literature covering the field of Computational Stochastic Mechanics.

Book excerpt: At the dawn of the 21st century, computational stochastic dynamics is an emerging research frontier. This book focuses on advanced computational methods and software tools which can highly assist in tackling complex problems in stochastic dynamic/seismic analysis and design of structures. The book is primarily intended for researchers and post-graduate students in the fields of computational mechanics and stochastic structural dynamics. Nevertheless, practice engineers as well could benefit from it as most code provisions tend to incorporate probabilistic concepts in the analysis and design of structures. The book addresses mathematical and numerical issues in stochastic structural dynamics and connects them to real-world applications. It consists of 16 chapters dealing with recent advances in a wide range of related topics (dynamic response variability and reliability of stochastic systems, risk assessment, stochastic simulation of earthquake ground motions, efficient solvers for the analysis of stochastic systems, dynamic stability, stochastic modelling of heterogeneous materials). Numerical examples demonstrating the significance of the proposed methods are presented in each chapter.

Book excerpt: Many problems of engineering interest involve linear dynamic systems with random loading and random properties which may or may not vary in time; these systems are said to undergo random parametric vibration. Reliability methods, and other approaches using a full probabilistic description of the problem, are not capable of handling time dependent random properties unless the variation can be expressed in terms of a few random variables. On the other hand, response statistics of systems in random parametric vibration are often useful to designers and analysts. However, current approaches which could be used to compute these response statistics are slow, inaccurate, or unfeasible. This work offers a new statistical approach to obtain response statistics of linear dynamic systems in random parametric vibration. This approach, called the random matrix method, is a distant cousin to an existing Taylor-expansion perturbation approach, but is faster, more efficient, more accurate, and more stochastically stable; it is also superior to Monte Carlo approaches. The random matrix method first discretizes the problem, so that the equations of motion can be expressed as a random matrix equation. Statistics of an inverse matrix are obtained using a Neumann expansion, and response statistics can be obtained from the statistics of the load and the inverse matrix. This method is capable of analysis in either the frequency or time domain and can handle both stationary and nonstationary load and properties. Three different problems with time-dependent properties will be analyzed by the random matrix method and by Monte Carlo techniques for comparison. First, response statistics will be obtained for a generic single degree of freedom oscillator with stationary stiffness and load. Then, the ride comfort of a car, a multiple degree of freedom system with stationary tire stiffness, will be investigated. Finally, a fatigue damage analysis of a light aircraft's landing gear will be conducted; note that this problem involves a single degree of freedom system with nonstationary random damping and load. In all cases, the magnitude of random property effects on response will be examined, to see if random properties need to be taken into account for these systems.

Book excerpt: The IUTAM Symposium on Advances in Nonlinear Stochastic Mechanics, held in Trondheim July 3-7, 1995, was the eighth of a series of IUTAM sponsored symposia which focus on the application of stochastic methods in mechanics. The previous meetings took place in Coventry, UK (1972), Sout'hampton, UK (1976), FrankfurtjOder, Germany (1982), Stockholm, Sweden (1984), Innsbruckjlgls, Austria (1987), Turin, Italy (1991) and San Antonio, Texas (1993). The symposium provided an extraordinary opportunity for scholars to meet and discuss recent advances in stochastic mechanics. The participants represented a wide range of expertise, from pure theoreticians to people primarily oriented toward applications. A significant achievement of the symposium was the very extensive discussions taking place over the whole range from highly theoretical questions to practical engineering applications. Several presentations also clearly demonstrated the substantial progress that has been achieved in recent years in terms of developing and implement ing stochastic analysis techniques for mechanical engineering systems. This aspect was further underpinned by specially invited extended lectures on computational stochastic mechanics, engineering applications of stochastic mechanics, and nonlinear active control. The symposium also reflected the very active and high-quality research taking place in the field of stochastic stability. Ten presentations were given on this topic ofa total of47 papers. A main conclusion that can be drawn from the proceedings of this symposium is that stochastic mechanics as a subject has reached great depth and width in both methodology and applicability.
