Book excerpt: Prepared by the Subcommittee on Uncertainty and Reliability Analyses in Design of Hydraulic Structures of the Technical Committee on Probabilistic Approaches to Hydraulics of ASCE. This report contains 13 papers presenting the application of reliability analysis to the design and safety of hydraulic structures. Several recent major failures of engineering systems have raised public concern on the safety and reliability of engineering struct.ures. Decades ago, a quantitative evaluation of the reliability of structures was not possible and engineers used safety factors that were determined mainly through experience and judgement. Recent advances in probability methods and computers make it feasible to evaluate the contributions of various technologic and natural factors to the safety and reliability of structures.Ă˜The first four papers in this report discuss techniques pertinent to reliability and uncertainty analyses. The next nine papers explore how these techniques can be applied to dam safety, coastal floods, and hydraulic structures. The report concludes with a reprint of an article by Vrijling on the Eastern Scheldt Storm Surge Barrier of the Delta Project in the Netherlands and the use of reliability analysis for sewer design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to be a textbook for students of water resources engineering and management. It is an introduction to methods used in hydrosystems for upper level undergraduate and graduate students. The material can be presented to students with no background in operations research and with only an undergraduate background in hydrology and hydraulics. A major focus is to bring together the use of economics, operations research, probability and statistics with the use of hydrology, hydraulics, and water resources for the analysis, design, operation, and management of various types of water projects. This book is an excellent reference for engineers, water resource planners, water resource systems analysts, and water managers. This book is concerned with the mathematical modeling of problems in water project design, analysis, operation, and management. The quantitative methods include: (a) the simulation of various hydrologic and hydraulic processes; (b) the use of operations research, probability and statistics, and economics. Rarely have these methods been integrated in a systematic framework in a single book like Hydrosystems Engineering and Management. An extensive number of example problems are presented for ease in understanding the material. In addition, a large number of end-of-chapter problems are provided for use in homework assignments.

Book excerpt: Engineering Uncertainty and Risk Analysis offers an integrated coverage of the subjects of probability, statistics, Monte Carlo simulation, descriptive and inferential statistics, design of experiments, systems reliability, fitting random data to models, analysis of variance (ANOVA), stochastic processes, and stochastic differential equations. The author for first time presents an introduction to the broad field of engineering uncertainty analysis in one comprehensive, friendly, coverage. The focus is on engineering applications, rather than theoretical or mathematical considerations. Each concept is illustrated with several examples (177 solved examples) of relevance in engineering applications (no cards, colored balls, or dice). This second edition includes many new research advances in nonlinear stochastic equations; new simple methods to solve and graph boundary-value problems in several dimensions without the need of perturbation, or complex traditional analytical or numerical techniques; 478 pages; 177 solved examples; 147 proposed problems; 174 illustrations, 69 short computer programs; and 51 data and statistical tables

Book excerpt: The applications of stochastic methods in design by reliability include the better utilisation of hydrological information. With statistical methods one can evaluate the safety component of hydraulic systems. Based on these, extra safety features can be added to ensure the reliable performance of an hydraulic system. One such example is the design of a dam, which features a number of random variables, each with a very distinct and quite different probability function. This book reports on developments in stochastic hydraulics across a wide range of applications, including river hydraulics, sediment transportation, waves and coastal processes, hydrology, hydraulic works and structure, and environmental hydraulics.

Answer: This book shows you the way! In a unique and comprehensive manner, questions of risk and reliability in water quality are analyzed. And more than that: The author also develops a methodology to evaluate the environmental impact of wastewater disposal on rivers, groundwater and coastal areas. Major topics covered include: fuzzy set theory for engineering risk analysis/ uncertainty analysis of water quantity and quality data/ stochastic and fuzzy simulation of hydrosystems: model selection under uncertainty, water quality control and management in rivers and aquifers, risk in coastal pollution/ decision theory under uncertainty: groundwater pollution, risk management, risk-cost trade-offs In addition, numerous case studies deepen the reader's understanding of the methods and techniques presented. Jacques Ganoulis from the University of Thessaloniki has written extensively on groundwater hydraulics, surface hydrology and coastal water quality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water resources are sources of water that are useful or potentially useful to humans. They are important because they are needed for life to exist. Many uses of water include agricultural, industrial, household, recreational and environmental activities. Virtually all of these human uses require fresh water. Only 2.7% of water on the Earth is fresh water, and over two thirds of this is frozen in glaciers and polar ice caps, leaving only 0.007% available for human use. Fresh water is a renewable resource, yet the world's supply of clean, fresh water is steadily decreasing. Water demand already exceeds supply in many parts of the world, and as world population continues to rise at an unprecedented rate, many more areas are expected to experience this imbalance in the near future. The framework for allocating water resources to water users (where such a framework exists) is known as water rights. This new book presents recent and important research in the field.

Book excerpt: Floods constitute a persistent and serious problem throughout the United States and many other parts of the world. They are responsible for losses amounting to billions of dollars and scores of deaths annually. Virtually all parts of the nation--coastal, moun tainous and rural--are affected by them. Two aspects of the problem of flooding that have long been topics of scientific inquiry are flood frequency and risk analyses. Many new, even improved, tech niques have recently been developed for performing these analyses. Nevertheless, actual experience points out that the frequency of say a IOO-year flood, in lieu of being encountered on the average once in one hundred years, may be as little as once in 25 years. It is therefore appropriate to pause and ask where we are, where we are going and where we ought to be going with regard to the technology of flood frequency and risk analyses. One way to address these ques tions is to provide a forum where people from all quarters of the world can assemble, discuss and share their experience and expertise pertaining to flood frequency and risk analyses. This is what con stituted the motivation for organizing the International Symposium on Flood Frequency and Risk Analyses held May 14-17, 1986, at Louisiana State Universj. ty, Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Book excerpt: Although many theoretical developments have been achieved in recent years, the progress both in understanding and application of risk and reliability analysis in water resources and environmental engineering remains slow. One of the reasons seems to be the lack of training of engineers with phenomena of statistical nature, including optimum cost and benefit decisions under uncertainty. This book presents, in a unified and comprehensive framework, the various aspects of risk and reliability in bothwater quantity and quality problems. The topics covered include uncertainty analysis of water quantity and quality data, stochastic simulation of hydrosystems, decision theory under uncertaintyand case studies. Methods for risk analysis of extremes in hydrology, groundwater clean-up, river and coastal pollution as well as total risk management are presented.
