Book excerpt: GIS and Geostatistical Techniques for Groundwater Science provides a detailed synthesis of the application of GIS and geostatistics in groundwater studies. As the book illustrates, GIS can be a powerful tool for developing solutions for water resource problems, assessing water quality, and managing water resources. Beginning with an introduction to the history of GIS and geostatistical techniques in groundwater studies, the book then describes various spatial techniques, including case studies for various applications, from quality assessment, to resource management. This book assembles the most up-to-date techniques in GIS and geostatistics as they relate to groundwater, one of our most important natural resources. - Provides details on the application of GIS and statistics in groundwater studies - Includes practical coverage of the use of spatial analysis techniques in groundwater science - Bridges the gap between geostatistics and GIS as it relates to groundwater science and management - Offers worldwide case studies to illustrate various techniques and applications in addressing groundwater issues

Book excerpt: An experimental study was undertaken to document the evolution of a drainage basin and to identify hydrologic changes. A 9 by 15 m facility was built and filled with a homogeneous mixture of sand, silt, and clay. A sprinkling system was established along the sides of the container, and it provided four intensities of rainfall to the nearly 140 sq. m drainage basin. Two experiments were performed each of which documented the evolution of the drainage system on gently sloping surfaces. The initial conditions (relief and initial surface slope) of each experiment were different, and these initiated differences in the mode of network growth. Nevertheless, during both experiments drainage patterns evolved through the sequence of network initiation, extension of the network to maximum extension, and, finally, to abstraction. Sediment yields from the basin undergoing erosional evolution show an exponential decline with time. This overall trend is characterized by high variability. Hydrographs generated as basin evolution progressed suggest that runoff produced by lower precipitation intensities is most influenced by the geomorphology of the basin. The ratio of peak discharge to the equilibrium discharge shows a dramatic increase during early basin development. The efficiency of the hydrologic response, appears to increase to a maximum as drainage density and/or relief increases. Further increases in drainage density do not increase the efficiency of the hydrologic system. (Author).

Multiple ecosystem services delivered by wetlands to human well-being should be considered in broader contexts of wetland functions, water quality, water resource management and wetland conservation. Natural wetlands are 'kidneys' and 'sponges' of the earth that remove water pollutants and provide hydrological regulation functions vital to the environment. Where the functions of the wetlands are weakened, actions of rehabilitations are needed to revitalize those functions. While worldwide many natural wetlands have disappeared due to climate change and/or human activities, constructed wetlands, which may be seen as 'artificial kidneys/sponges' of the earth, have been increasingly built to replicate the functions of the natural wetlands. This Research Topic aims to collect and present the latest research developments in natural and constructed wetlands in relation to either water resource functions or water quality. Articles published in this Research Topic will showcase new understandings of water balances and flow patterns, vegetation characteristics, and pollutant transformations in wetland systems; innovative designs and efficiencies of wastewater treatment wetlands; and technologies that revitalize the ecosystem functions of natural wetlands. These articles are expected to bring benefits to research communities, water and wastewater industries, and government agencies that deal with wetland water management and conservation. High-quality Original Research and Review articles in this field are all welcome for submission to this Research Topic. Research interests include but are not limited to the following areas: 1. Water balances and flow patterns in natural wetland systems. 2. The hydrological regulation functions and importance of natural wetlands in their environmental context. 3. Vegetation characteristics of natural wetlands and their functional importance in wetland water pollution control. 4. Techniques for the rehabilitation of degraded wetlands. 5. The role of constructed wetlands in wastewater treatment. 6. Innovative designs and efficiencies of wastewater treatment wetlands. 7. The modeling of hydrological and/or pollutant dynamics in wetland systems. 8. The ecohydrology of wetlands. 9. The role of wetlands in the global carbon cycle. 10. Impacts of climate change and human activities on wetland hydrology and water resources. Recognizing that hydrological and biogeochemical processes are basically coupled in wetlands and their landscapes, manuscripts that report their interactions are particularly welcome.
