Book excerpt: In Washington, D.C., the Kill Committee gathers in the White House's Situation Room to pick the next targets for the United States drone program. At an airbase just outside Las Vegas, a team of pilots, military personnel, and intelligence officers follow through on the committee's orders, finding the men who have been deemed a threat to national security and sentenced to death. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, in the mountains where the drones hunt their prey, someone has decided to fight back. And not just against the unmanned planes that circle their skies, but against the Americans at home who control them. In Sting of the Drone, bestselling author Richard A. Clarke draws on his decades-long experience at the very highest levels of national security to craft a thrilling novel that has the feel of nonfiction, taking us behind closed doors to meet the men and women who protect America--and those who seek to do us harm.

Book Synopsis Training for Catastrophe by : Lindsay Thomas
Download or read book Training for Catastrophe written by Lindsay Thomas and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2021-03-16 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A timely, politically savvy examination of how impossible disasters shape the very real possibilities of our world Why would the normally buttoned-down national security state imagine lurid future scenarios like a zombie apocalypse? In Training for Catastrophe, author Lindsay Thomas shows how our security regime reimagines plausibility to focus on unlikely and even unreal events rather than probable ones. With an in-depth focus on preparedness (a pivotal, emergent national security paradigm since 9/11) she explores how fiction shapes national security. Thomas finds fiction at work in unexpected settings, from policy documents and workplace training manuals to comics and video games. Through these texts—as well as plenty of science fiction—she examines the philosophy of preparedness, interrogating the roots of why it asks us to treat explicitly fictional events as real. Thomas connects this philosophical underpinning to how preparedness plays out in contemporary politics, emphasizing how it uses aesthetic elements like realism, genre, character, and plot to train people both to regard some disasters as normal and to ignore others. Training for Catastrophe makes an important case for how these documents elicit consent and compliance. Thomas draws from a huge archive of texts—including a Centers for Disease Control comic about a zombie apocalypse, the work of Audre Lorde, and the political thrillers of former national security advisor Richard Clarke—to ask difficult questions about the uses and values of fiction. A major statement on how national security intrudes into questions of art and life, Training for Catastrophe is a timely intervention into how we confront disasters.

Download or read book The Middle Five written by Francis La Flesche and published by BoD - Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-06-01 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Middle Five, written by the Omaha ethnologist Francis La Flesche, is a series of vignettes portraying La Flesche’s childhood growing up on the Omaha Reservation and attending a Presbyterian mission school. Published in 1909, the book portrays both the cultural conflicts arising from the assimilatory nature of the mission school and the youthful escapades of Frank (La Flesche’s younger self), Brush, Edwin, Warren, and Lester, who together make up the titular gang of schoolboys called the “Middle Five.” Like Zitkála-Šá’s short story “The School Days of an Indian Girl” from American Indian Stories, The Middle Five depicts life in an American Indian residential school, but takes place much closer to the reservation and thus portrays the interactions between the mission school and reservation life. It is regarded as a classic work of Native American literature and is often assigned in classrooms as a vivid firsthand account of 19th-century indigenous life.

The book also includes an interview with Laurence Lampert.
Book Synopsis The History of Four-Footed Beasts and Serpents and Insects by : Edward Topsell
Download or read book The History of Four-Footed Beasts and Serpents and Insects written by Edward Topsell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 2216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1967. This is volume one of three of The History of Four- footed Beasts taken principally from the ‘ Historite Animalium’ of Conrad Gesner. During the first decade of the seventeenth century, when Topsell prepared his translation, zoology had just become a science. It has a unique place: It was the first major book on animals printed in Great Britain in English; and it appeared at the last moment in history when all zoological knowledge since antiquity could be summarized sympathetically, before it was rendered a curiosity by the many new discoveries soon to come.
Book Synopsis Kicking Tongues by : Karen King-Aribisala
Download or read book Kicking Tongues written by Karen King-Aribisala and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-11-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karen King-Aribisala brilliantly transposes Chaucer's Canterbury Tales to modern-day Nigeria in this magnificent tale of forty very different travellers thrown together on a bus journey from Lagos to the new capital, Abuja. Carefully selected by their hostess – an enigmatic figure who calls herself, 'The Black Lady The' – the passengers on this journey range from a wealthy tribal chief to a humble petrol pump attendant, from a rain-maker to a reserved woman observing purdah. They are united only by their dissatisfaction with Nigeria's chaotic and corrupt regime, a concern which is reflected in the widely differing stories they tell on their journey – bawdy tales, sharp satires, poignant narratives and moral fables. Blending poetry and prose, rich visual images, and witty puns, Karen King-Aribisala succeeds in transforming a fourteenth-century English classic into an exuberant and distinctively African work.
