Book Synopsis Learning Strategies in Engineering Mathematics by : Birgit Griese
Download or read book Learning Strategies in Engineering Mathematics written by Birgit Griese and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-28 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Birgit Griese presents MP2-Math/Plus, a support project for first-year students in engineering at Ruhr-Universität Bochum that aims at preventing unnecessary drop-out. Conceptualisation and development of the project follow a design research approach according to Gravemeijer, Cobb, and van den Akker. The interventions focus on learning strategies which are collected in a pre-post design with the aid of the LIST questionnaire by Wild and Schiefele. These and other data are utilised for the evaluation of MP2-Math/Plus. The results confirm the adaptations of the project procedures in successive cycles, stress the importance of effort and motivation, and assess the success of the project.

Book excerpt: O Praise the Lord with One Consent was composed in 1718 while Handel was residing in Cannons Park. Like the other Chandos Anthems, it was comissioned by the Earl of Carnarvon James Brydges, subsequently named First Duke of Chandos. The anthem was first performed that year under the composer's direction ay St. Lawrence's Church in Cannons Park. The text is taken from Psalms 117, 135, and 148 in Nahum Tate and Nicolas Brady's 1696 New Versions of the Psalms. This complete vocal and pano score, edited by Max Seiffert with a piano reduction by Karl Pasler, is an unabridged reprint of the score first issued by Breitkopf & Hartel, Leipzig ca.1900. Matching orchestral parts and full score are now also available from Serenissima Music (95139).

Book Synopsis Giacomo Meyerbeer Choral Music and Songs by : Robert Ignatius Letellier
Download or read book Giacomo Meyerbeer Choral Music and Songs written by Robert Ignatius Letellier and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-10-12 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume of Meyerbeer’s non-operatic work is devoted to his secular choral writing for male voices, solo songs with chorus, and later songs with instrumental obbligato and local colour. Choral writing—so much part of the operatic tradition, also germane to religious music, and integral to the public music of celebration—is fundamental to the next genre Meyerbeer wrote for, the part-song, a typical German tradition. Meyerbeer’s part-songs for male chorus, most of which were provided for the Liedertafel Friends of the Berlin Singakademie, use the age-old themes of unity, friendship, patriotism, homeland, hunting: Bundeslied (1835), Freundschaft (1842), Dem Vaterlande (1842), and Die lustigen Jägersleut (1842). This set of four illustrates the composer’s harmonic richness, his imaginative use of all the variants of vocal timbre and tessitura, in part-writing, textured unison and homophony. Rather different were two later numbers, Der Wanderer und die Geister an Beethovens Grabe (1845), and Das Lied vom blinden Hessen (1862). The first is a personal tribute to the memory of Beethoven, for bass solo and chorus, that uses the Platonic imagery of the music of the spheres as the transcendent ideal of beauty. The late Song of the Blind Hessian, requiring a tenor soloist and chorus, is a deeply felt lament in which the protagonist’s blindness becomes the metaphor for a series of variations on loneliness, exile and loss, and eventually a correlative of disenfranchisement and yearning for freedom—political and spiritual. In both songs the chorus has a more dramatic role than in the part-songs, reflecting on the situation presented in the soloist’s manifesto, sometimes serene and supporting, at others adding to the sense of anguish and aspiration. Throughout his career Meyerbeer wrote songs. These reflected the circumstances of his life, the various cultural milieux he moved in—particularly, of course, the German, Italian and French worlds. The majority of Meyerbeer’s songs were composed between 1828 and 1860, in tandem with his illustrious operatic career and socially prestigious musical posts in Berlin. Meyerbeer’s songs in whatever genre show the influence of the Lied, especially in his subtle use of the piano parts. Unique among Meyerbeer’s songs are two written with instrumental obbligatos: “Hier oben” (Des Schäfers Lied or Hirtenlied) (Ludwig Rellstab) (1842) (for tenor, clarinet and piano, published in Paris in 1857), and “Près de toi” (“Neben Dir”) (Gustav Roger, translated by the poet and historian Joseph Duesberg) (1857) (for tenor with violoncello and piano, published in Paris in the same year). Meyerbeer adapted a strong sense of local colour in two songs composed in the 1850s: the Spanish bolero in the mélodie written for the incidental music to Aylic-Langlé’s play Murillo (Ballade dans la comédie Murillo, ou Le Peintre mendiant un modèle) (Paris, 1853); and the Italian barcarole in the canzonetta “A Venezia” (Pietro Beltrame) (1856) [Paris: Brandus, 1856; Cologne: Schloss, n.d.].

Book Synopsis On the Grammar of Optative Constructions by : Patrick Georg Grosz
Download or read book On the Grammar of Optative Constructions written by Patrick Georg Grosz and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2012-08-15 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is one of the first theoretical studies of optatives. Optative constructions express desire without an overt lexical item that means ‘desire’. The author specifically investigates optatives with the syntax of embedded clauses that contain prototypical particles such as ‘only’. He rejects the view that optativity arises compositionally from the standard semantics of embedded clauses and prototypical particles. The following system is proposed: Desirability is due to a generalized scalar exclamation operator EX. Furthermore, clausal properties such as factivity/counterfactuality are encoded in a Mood head, which co-determines morphological mood and complementizer choice. Finally, the prototypical particles that optatives contain are truth-conditionally vacuous presupposition triggers. As a result, these meaning components do not interact directly, but their meanings converge, with the consequence that they prototypically co-occur. This monograph is of interest for formal semanticists, syntacticians, pragmaticists and morphologists, and especially relevant for research on mood and particle semantics.

Book Synopsis Bare Argument Ellipsis and Focus by : Andreas Konietzko
Download or read book Bare Argument Ellipsis and Focus written by Andreas Konietzko and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-12-15 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph explores the syntax and information structure of bare argument ellipsis. The study concentrates on stripping, which is identified as a subtype of bare argument ellipsis typically associated with focus sensitive particles or negation. This monograph presents a unified account of stripping located at the syntax-information structure interface and argues for a licensing mechanism which is strongly tied to the focus properties of the construction. Under this view, types of bare argument ellipsis such as stripping and pseudostripping, which have received different treatments in the literature, are shown to be subject to the same licensing mechanism. This analysis is also extended to instances of bare argument ellipsis in embedded contexts, which have received little attention in the literature so far. Integrating theoretical and experimental reasoning, this study presents a series of experiments investigating the extraction, prosody and context properties of stripping and thus arrives at a comprehensive and unified account.
